This film is great. It showed that sometimes kids aren't intentionally rude; they just haven't really considered the possibility of inconvenience or property damage or hurt feelings of others. It showed that good manners aren't necessarily 'sissy stuff', an affectation, or people going out of their way to show off; even walking around others or returning a ball that traveled off course is good manners. And that manners aren't just for adults; the kids took responsibility and spoke up for manners in a funny and somewhat realistic way.
I used to assume people didn’t like me and I would be rude and dismissive to them. In turn that made my assumptions true because I caused them to not like me. It took a year to break the habit but I’m happier for it.
It’s always kind of ironic that adults go on and on about manners when you’re a kid but as an adult now I rarely see good manners. Adults need to remember their childhood lessons.
I think its because the majority of society hasn't been raised with manners, especially any more. Its sad. I wish we could change it somehow! Nowadays you can burn down an entire city and get away with it 🙄

It occurred to me that when Mrs. Norris was visiting his mother, Mickey could have asked if he could turn on the TV but have the volume at the lowest level--perhaps his mother would have permitted it. That would have required the ability to compromise--a skill that's also very important to develop.

Twenty years ago I was in a restaurant where a woman was alone with her little boy who was running rampant. She was on the phone paying no attention. He came up to our table and I told him to go sit with his mother. For being such an awful disciplinarian I incurred the wrath of his mother. Even my dinner partner scolded me. "That's not your kid," she told me. That kid is nearly thirty now. I wonder how he turned out.
Mom acts surprised at Mickey's behavior but this is not an overnight bad habit. He has bad behavior from bad parenting and then Father will give Mickey the belt. Today, he would be in psych evaluation and put on drugs. lol
In the early 1980s I was in high school. One day while sitting in class, out of the blue, for reasons i cant recall, the school 16mm movie projector was rolled into the classroom. And they played for us several of these old, antiquated 1950s instructional films on how to date, how to be polite, how to behave, etc. My classmates laughed through them. The wooden acting, the cheap production values, the over politeness, the squeaky clean activities (a picnic, a carnival, a weenie roast, bike riding, a day at the park, dinner at home with the family, etc), the innocent slang of the time (gee, golly, swell, etc). I on the other hand, wasn't laughing. To the contrary. As someone who was being raised in a severely abusive, dysfunctional home (we NEVER sat together at the same table at meal times. Not even once. Even though we always had a full sized dining room with a full sized dining room table), i found these films to be quite charming. A sort of a time capsule of a more innocent era. DON'T get me wrong. I had no illusions. I was well aware that the 1950s wasnt so perfect and innocent. That there were negative things going on in the 1950s, such as segregation, criminal activity, corruption in the public and private sectors, poverty, the occasional economic recession, war, etc. No decade is perfect. But still, it seems to me that there were SOME things in the 1950s they were doing so right back then that we were doing so horribly wrong in the early 1980s as well as today.
Manners and respect are definitely important but the reality of it is that not everyone is going to be respectful of have mannners so I think these days, it would be just as beneficial to teach your kid how not to be butt-hurt or offended over everything. Especially when what theyre being told is true or is constructive criticism!

The Holy Bible says that evil communications corrupt good manners . Though manners are good to have , yet , without a changed heart about ones being a sinner before God our creator , who is holy , through repenting of our sins and trusting in his Son , The Lord Jesus Christ , they will only help us with some people who major on them . But a changed person will want to treat others right , with their manners anyway . By trusting the one who died on the cross for their sins , and rose from the dead the third day . And is alive in heaven , waiting to save them to the uttermost that ask him to .
Mickey is a saint compared to some of the little terrors I see daily. Dresses well, doing his homework in his bedroom and he actually listen to his mom when she said turn the tv off. Hes not a bad kid he just knows his mom and her rules are bullshhh
I just have to add this. In the hippy era when everyone dressed and looked like a horses A$$ I knew this kid in school who was out of a time warp. He was extremely polite....and I do mean "extremely" polite. He dressed like the 1950s. He had greasy short hair, a checked shirt buttoned all the way up to his chin. Wore very clean, neat pants that were just a tad too short, white socks and brown string tie shoes. Always had tons of cash too. All the adults loved him and we were often told to be more like him. Now here is the hilarious part, no lie, this is the God's honest truth.......He was breaking into houses all over the city and robbing them blind. He once needed a new battery for his car and I saw him across the lot popping the hood of a new car and cut the battery cables with bolt cutters and just walk off with a new battery. He got away with this behavior for at least 15 years. Nobody ever saw him again after that. Have no idea what happened to him,
Manners mean getting along with others pleasantly, which makes everyone's days more enjoyable. When a population can no longer get along, that society is destroyed, from within.
manners are fucking pathetic.. the idea that you should expect to be given a pat on the back for anything you do is for weak people.. if i respect you i will show it to you with effort. not a few sweet words.
Give Mickey a break, he's in front of the TV and he's obviously half blind and half deaf. The next day Mickey was walking to school and had forgotten all about what his mother said. He happened to run across Mary who was also walking to school. Mary didn't care that Mickey didn't have any manners and liked him for it, she liked it rough and a little slapping and spitting always made playtime more fun and exciting. 😲 😉
