I was on the fence initially Alexander, but the improved graphic design ('bout time Doc!) really sold me with the production values and good looks. Bonus that it actually looks to be (gasp!) playable too! Goodness me, I need to get a game to learn going myself. Thanks for the unboxing.
Dice of Decision allows you change the history before WWII Starts. It’s a kinda of pre-game, you can roll or choose things like Germany wins WWI, Austria Hungary survives WWI, things like that. The map overlays are part of DOD and change the start of the game.
"Scholars writing in English use the terms Indië, Indies, the Dutch East Indies, the Netherlands Indies, and colonial Indonesia interchangeably." The use of "East Indies" without "Dutch" is probably an affectation on the part of the creator. Similar to using "Russia" instead of "USSR", although technically Russia was a PART of the USSR, but the "main" country was called USSR, at least by the Soviets. Sometimes game maps use the names that existed on a set of maps from the era because there are different possible names/spellings and you have to standardize on something. Only using the terminology that the country itself prefers is mostly a modern thing. Although we still call the country "Turkey" even though the real official name is "Türkiye".
The way you described the game certainly makes it more approachable. Now I’m thinking of it as two games and two expansions in one box, which isn’t bad at all! But for about $300, you’re really going all or nothing! 😂
This game looks so interesting that I am sorry that I never heard of it until it was too late to get it. Not that I NEED another game that big. I already gave up on World in Flames because I was never ever going to get to it.
I received mine in europe in november 23 and between dispatch and customs I had to pay almost 500 euro. But it was definitely worth it. The production value of the components (box included) is a real change of pace from the old DG standards. Top notch. The rules are very well written and although they are in many places different from "standard" grand strategic wargames, they can be slowly digested if you invest your time into studying them. It simulates many aspects of WWII at a very upper level of the strategic scale, especially with the card play. Please, Alexander and Grant give it a go with a TK 1937 campaign, I really would like to know your impressions. For me it is the absolute best and much better than WiF.
After you've played the game and done the review, you might do something similar to what you did between Europa Universalis and Here I stand, with axis empires and unconditional surrender?
Question: This game looks cool. But (and I might just be missing it) how does one defeat the United States? I see that all the major powers are represented on the two maps, but no mainland U.S.. In the early version of World in Flames, a couple of "off-map" boxes represented the U.S. (and Canada), so it was possible to invade North America, albeit on a massively-compressed scale. Later versions of WiF even had a large map of the Western Hemisphere. Is the U.S. defeated in Axis Empires simply by points/strategic location acquisition in other parts of the world (Europe and Asia), or are there "off-map" boxes that I'm missing? Thanks!
Do you ever post like a best at 2p type lists? I’ve seen you address player count in some of the other vids but I typically play at 2p and have been looking in to some war type games! Thank you for your videos!
The cards are used to drive the strategic direction of the game, you choose a card (not randomly draw one) and they are political events, getting more forces, and demanding territories like Austria and the Baltic States.
Thanks Alexander, went on to Decision Games but at $499 and that's probably US, will have to give this a miss. I'm in Australia. Please give us a relatively good account of the play thru of it. On ya.
I think that might be AUS, we payed like $375 from Decision. But yeah, either way, that puts it out of reach for a lot of people. We'll get to it for sure. I'm currently clipping the counters and it looks awesome.
@@ThePlayersAid Yep it said $375 but then with shipping to Australia went to $499. Given the game seemed to be the same price I'm gonna assume it was $US. 🤣 I'm crazy, but not that crazy. 😂
@@GrandPa_BBQer_Game_Cat I paid around US$270 at Noble Knight and got free shipping to a relative's house in the US. Expensive but not ruinously so. I'm closer to Australia than I am to the US, but some day I'll get over there to pick it up. In the meanwhile I am stuck watching other people's unboxing videos of a game I already own...
‘If you aren’t into monster games this will be a pass for you, but you’ll have fun looking at what is in the box.’ Alexander, you nailed it 😂
I love monster games.
That is a very beautiful looking game. Looks like a game where more than 2 players would be optimal. The maps are stunning.
My favorite Strategic WWII Game, very excited to get this to the table
I played so much Totaler Krieg back in the day.

Played a lot of AE:TK, the previous edition, some years ago and had a great time. Looking forward to trying this. It is a very playable monster.

Yes, that's exactly how I view it, and it's been a round a while and has a good rep, so yeah it's not cheap, but it's also less of a gamble!
The designer of Unconditional Surrender Sal Vista worked on Totaler Krieg and Axis Empires the previous editions

I know what you mean.
I bet playing this face to face is an incredible experience.
Ardwulf got me as well, got mine today.

I think if a when we actually get to this, we’ll def start with TK 1937.

Probably, will do something like that, yes.
Ok, I can't wait for it

We do fewer of those types, but there's a number of those types of written lists on our website
Looks like a monster!
Great video..as always!

"Sleds"? Off map holding charts/boxes.
yes off map counter sleds XD different parlance!
Is it bigger than Flames of War
Unsure, we’ve not played that
@@ThePlayersAid thank you
60 Pages of rules 🥵 that’s a pass, and no images …
Not an unfair take
But the Manuals HAVE Images😢 And a lot of playexamples
