This pilot was filmed, back in 2009, for CBS. CBS ended up choosing “Let’s Make A Deal!,” instead of “Pyramid,” to replace the long-running soap opera “Guiding Light.”
Without question CBS made a good choice by choosing let’s make a deal because they’ve lasted 16 seasons but as a fan a big money game shows it would’ve been nice to see if this actually would’ve succeeded with a full tournament format
PROS - Keeping the classic theme. Iconic!!! - Simplistic in the structure. It’s basically the 1980s “$100,000 Pyramid” adjusted for inflation. A credit to how good that version was! - Most of the same look of the original, with only a few modern tweaks. CONS - The host. Nope. Doesn’t do it! I would’ve loved to have seen Tom Bergeron host this version!! Seems like this would’ve been a fit for his style of hosting! … but, it’s hard to fill this role, with the perfection of Dick Clark always reigns supreme! - No Mystery 7 in the second round. Yeah, if you’re gonna do the 7-11, finish the deal with the Mystery 7. - No signature music with the Winner’s Circle clock. That was ICONIC! Again, if you’re going for the theme, look, and 7-11, go all-in!
This was an attempt to bring more game shows back to CBS TV. Something I wished they would do on all of the big three major networks - instead of just news and talk shows all day. Around the time this pilot was taped, there was also talk about a Joker's Wild pilot - hosted by Tom Bergeron. It was never filmed.
So much for you hosting game shows, esp. "Debt", now, you're the inspiration of uploading hard-to-find pilots for proposed game shows that should've or could've been on the air, past the stage, when almost every show didn't want to move forward to make it a series.
Little secret here. The two pilots done in NYC, with Tim Vincent and Dean Cain as hosts each, was not really at the "CBS Studios" per se. They were actually recorded at the historic Kaufman Astoria Studios [KAS] in the borough of Queens. The facilities originally were built in 1919-1920 as Paramount Pictures' East Coast studios then, where such stars as W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers did their early movies there. While it had or has been home to "Sesame Street" and "The Cosby Show", such past game shows in the 21st century as "Millon Dollar Password", "The Generation Gap" and "The Power Of Ten" have been done there also. The Kaufman Astoria Studios would have been quite ideal for the ABC Strahan version of "Pyramid" for its Seasons 6 and 7, after losing their Upper West Side Manhattan studio in January 2021 and not moving out to CBS Radford in Studio City, California. But alas, I digress though. And so it goes...
This was produced at the Astor-Kaufmann studio in Queens NY. I believe the only "Hollywood" type studio in New York City (where it's shared). Sesame Street, The Cosby Show & Million Dollar Password (w/ Regis Philban) were also produced there.
It's interesting that Tim mentioned that Norm was on who wants to be a millionaire with Regis because Tim was a guest host on the syndicated version for a week.
Not bad, but I think I like the Strahan version that ended up on ABC primetime more. Is that ever coming back with new episodes? It hasn't been cancelled, but it's been a while since new episodes aired.
ABC-TV did not order any new episodes to be made in 2024 for a possible Season 8 of the Strahan "Pyramid". The network has still not decided as to what to do with the show and its ultimate fate at this point, as it is not yet on any future programming schedule that is planned or pending.
Dimmed lights as the bonus round starts, the original ticking clock, "Here is your first subject... go"--- would have added to tension. Better host, no tick sounds during main game clock. The little things they got wrong!
I like that some of the answers in the front game were tougher than normal. They were not the layups that we saw in the original version. The end game, however, was not as difficult as it should have been.
I must be the only person in the world who has never seen the hype over Pyramid. I've always felt it to be extremely overrated since its just password's lightning round as the main game.
Interesting.... very interesting. Plays very differently from other versions of pyramid. I noticed that they allowed people to go back to words that were passed on if time remains. Prior rules for this have been that receiver would have to guess the passed word no more clues or the point was lost. Host seemed a bit blank for my taste. But I like the format. Just wished they got away from tournament at end of season for the bigger money and added another way to earn the million. This pilot felt like the pilot for the pyramid during Michael Richards run.
Not bad, but the ticking of the timer on the front game isn't a fit. Glad the current version brought back the original tense ticking for the end game. Real trilons on said end game, nice touch.
Let’s Make a Deal is doing so well on CBS, but what if this made it past the pilot stage? A largely back-to-basics format that probably may have benefited in syndication, but then again, there were a lot of shows in the markets at the time. Only things I weren’t to keen of were the lack of the iconic Winner’s Circle clock sound and Tim Vincent as the host. He sounded a bit snarky in my opinion, but nothing too offensive. Again, seeing all this lost media always make me excited for your uploads, Wink. 💙
I do like the game play, but I wish they had the Mystery 7. Also, why didn't they explain how to qualify for playing for the million dollars? I know this was a pilot, but still...
One thing I’ve wondered about - do contestants appearing on pilots get to keep the money they win? I remember reading once that a competition show must actually air before contestants are paid out - and many pilots never air.
I believe contestants on pilots are paid for their appearance, but do not get to keep the winnings. And yes, it is standard in the industry that contestants do not receive their winnings until the episode airs. There are, of course, possible exceptions to these standards.
Unfortunately close but no cigar! Years later 100,000 dollar pyramid went back for the 2nd time, but during the summer for 7 seasons, going for 8th season next year. Hosted by Michael Strahan!
Better than the Andy Richter pilot (no fault of his own) for sure but with the how the front round game board was in the middle stage and in the winner's circle shot, they must've filmed this in such a small studio space. Aside from using Times New Roman for practically everything except for the scores & time, they tried to keep this true to the original which is much appreciated. Can't wait to see the Let's Make a Deal pilot, presumably taped at the recently demolished as of last week Tropicana casino (Sorry Wink)
@xSmootx Andy Richter would make a great host of something (Price is Right? Family Feud?). He wasn't bad at Pyramid but I prefer a more low-key (but still funny) host for that one
I like Pyramid, but I really don't like seeing the answers to the questions. I get it is a charm point for it and Password, but losing my ability to guess the answers is a sticking point for me. (No, I am not going to tape paper to my TV.)
So how do you play for a million dollars? Is this one of those shows that play a tournament format over a number of episodes? I know there were times on the Dick Clark run of Pyramid where they would have the contestants that got the best times completing the Winner's Circle compete in a final round for a large prize.
I'm gonna guess that the Million Dollars was decided in a tourney similar to the way the $100,000 Pyramid did... Also, noticed the wink to Norm McDonald's run at Who Wants To Be A Millionaire-the hill I will go down on that Regis cheated Norm out of the Million but talking him out of going for the question (which he would have gotten right)...
What ABC should do with the current version with Micheal Strahan--THEY SHOULD MAKE THIS A "BONUS" VERSION OF PYRAMID--for contestants who won $150,000 in the WINNER,S CIRCLE & if they make it the top of WINNER CIRCLE they not only win $1,000,000 they also win a new car 🚗!!
Who’s Tim Vincent and why was he here? Otherwise it’s very loyal to the original which means infinitely more cerebral than Let’s Make a Deal. Thanks, Wink and crew!
I remember when CBS passed on $1,000,000 Pyramid in favor of Let's Make A Deal, and I remember being so disappointed. Now that I've seen this pilot, I can see why they passed on it. This pilot SUCKS. The host has no personality, he looks like he's just there for the check. The set looks sparse, like a really cheaply made recreation of the original 1982-1991 set. The audience surrounding the set is all wrong. The sound effects are lifeless - especially the countdown clock in the Winners' Circle. I'm really glad this pilot didn't get picked up, and I am so thankful for the Michael Strahan version that came along seven years after this soulless husk of a would-be Pyramid revival. We Pyramid fans absolutely dodged a bullet by not getting this crappy 2009 version of Pyramid.
Like most longtime viewers of Pyramid, I prefer familiarity. I don't need a sound effect during the 30-second countdown in each round of the main game. The new layout, whatever the reason, is a little goofy, but I can live with it. Having the audience visible behind the host and contestants is unnecessary, but not a deal breaker. The host doesn't offend me, and he's not bad, but he doesn't dazzle me, either. Dean Cain doesn't excite me, either. Having a 7-11 in the first round, but no bonus in the second round, was just silly. I don't care if it's a 7-11 in both rounds, just have something to make choosing the categories in each round slightly more interesting. It seemed like they had more challenging answers overall in comparison to the 1980s. Why the need to change the countdown timer in the winner's circle, I don't know. I'm sure somebody had a reason they insisted it couldn't be the same. It seems silly to me, but so do the multiple comment here bemoaning the change.
I don't get how this did not get a green light. Even if it wasn't going to be Network and it was going to wind up in syndication it was a good take on Pyramid. Andy Richter's version was not good and there have been other not good versions of Pyramid. However this is not one of them and it would have made a good series.
Just like how americans didnt accept Bruce Forsyth or David Sparks on Crosswitz for that matter. Richard Dawson was at least already recognized by the time he started hosting Family Feud.
My guess is it would have been the same format as the hundred-thousand-dollar pyramid. It would have probably had a tournament and it would have taken two trips to the top to win the million.
Shocking how bad this is. Doesn't compare to the original. People are not as smart as they were in the past. Less educated and dumbed down by the use of computers. Sad state of affairs. Unwatchable.
It’s certainly not a bad effort, but clear that it wasn’t all there. A lot of the CGI / graphics just aren’t high-quality … even the FONTS are an eyesore. Nice to hear Bob Cobert’s iconic theme, but whoever was doing audio butchered the fading in and out. The host had minimal personality. On the bright side, though, at least Donny and his plug-ugly set are nowhere to be seen.
This would have been a good show, but Tim Vincent (at least in my opinion) was too bland and seemed a bit unenthusiastic about the show. Chuck Woolery (who hosted the 1996 pilot) was excellent at hosting and I think if he had hosted this pilot instead of Tim Vincent it most likely would have aired. Too bad it didn’t come to fruition.
Why Tim Vincent as host? He isn’t that great of a presenter. (Especially when he did There’s something about Miriam) Could they have stuck with Donny Osmond instead?
I agree I'm not a fan of Tim's hosting and somehow he keeps getting work. I know he also did the pilot for Chain Reaction for GSN but got passed over for Dylan Lane.
Thank you for bringing these pilots and rarities we have not seen or heard of in decades. You rule.
This pilot was filmed, back in 2009, for CBS. CBS ended up choosing “Let’s Make A Deal!,” instead of “Pyramid,” to replace the long-running soap opera “Guiding Light.”

Agreed, also the sets were good, good enough to be used in GSN's redition of "The Pyramid".
And it got passed up again in 2010 for the soon-to-be cancelled The Talk.
Actually they made the choice for LMAD in 2006 thanks to Game Show Marathon not because of this pilot.
Now the show is on ABC, but the jackpot is back at $100,000.

Pretty good pilot; it remained faithful to the original version, and Tim kept the show going; he just wasn't the right fit.
No "Mystery 7" in the 2nd round was a little letdown. Otherwise, not a bad revamp.
I was saying the same thing.
