This is the song you listen to when you are caught between being ‘just a friend’ and ‘being a real lover’ to somebody. It’s what you listen to when you feel like you are walking on the blade of a knife trying not to miss that special someone and message them pouring your heart out, even though they couldn’t really care less. It’s what you sing out loud in the shower when you see them with somebody else. You can never call them a lover because they were never yours to lose. The only way you can get over this feeling is by pretending and this song captures that beautifully.

This song, for me, is the perfect description of an "almost something", where the other person wasn't a friend to you but you never got into a real relationship. Sometimes, when something dies without even starting, it can hurt a lot. And, in the bottom of your heart, you still love her/him, but at the end the best you can do is go on and pretend they were just some lover.

Callum Alston Ohhh then I completely misunderstood it all this time :0 I thought about staying up, exhaustion from going out, not resting enough etc and hanging on by the dark circles under eyes from all that (trying to always distract from feeling and resting etc). I loved it cause it was like he was physically only hanging on from the rings around his eyes ie. the actions that led to those rings. Now I think I just misunderstood .... This is what a nostalgia of emptiness feels like, of the sick enjoyment of remembering someone who was so ingrained in your soul but you know should never be yours, of the past memories that still slip through once in a while. it's not from the same album, Submarine's soundtrack didn't have this song there. Sias was influenced by Submarine's album but it's not the same one
@@FigApricot i thought submarine was inspired by sias? I heard alex wrote most of sub whilst on tour break in early 2010 except from some of a few he had in the vaults. Dont take my word for it thought. They probably took parts from each to be honest

There's some lyrics of this song that I relate with so painfully I want to stop listening but it's such a beautiful song.

I asked my best friend out last november, and she said no. She introduced me to the Arctic Monkeys, and this was the first song she played to me. It will also be the first song that plays in my head when I think of her. I genuinely thought my feelings were reciprocated. She once told me she would date me if I asked. I used to give her flowers sometimes, I was head over heels in love. Although, even if she had said yes, it would not have gotten anywhere, I don't live in a country where a girl can date a girl, and highschool relationships seldom ever last anyways. There were too many hurdles, and its just a passing dream now. Shes beautiful, and deserves the world, I know she'll do well in life. Our friendship is growing apart, not because of the above mentioned situation, but because of our busy schedules. But she'll always have an important role to play in my memories that I will cherish.
That was beautiful. And as much pain as love will put you in, it always teaches us those lessons the ones who don’t dare to love will never learn. Keep going strong and soon I hope you find the love you and everyone else deserves ❤️
