  • The 1986/87 season introduced automatic relegation into the Conference League. With the final game of the season to go, Torquay were second from bottom on 47 points, below them was Burnley on 46 points. Lincoln City had 48 points and seemed in least danger.
The final game was against Crewe Alexandra at Plainmoor. At half-time Crewe were leading 2-0 ! Two minutes into the second-half Torquay's centre-half, Jim McNichol, scores from a free kick. Despite an all-out attack, Torquay seem unable to get the equaliser - even hitting the crossbar.
Seven minutes from time a piece of football folklore is created. A Police dog by the name of Bryn believes that Jim McNichol is running to attack his handler, and sinks his teeth into the centre-half's thigh. It was from the resultant four minutes of injury time that Paul Dobson scored possibly the most important goal in the clubs history, and kept them in the Football League. As history shows it was unfortunate Lincoln City that was sent into the Conference League.

That game was my first time ever watching Torquay. I've been a fan ever since, but never seen a game quite as bonkers as this one. BTW great to see Kenny Allen again, a great character.

It always gets me that the media claimed that the dog 'saved' Torquay, in total ignorance of the fact that injury time is played because a game is stopped for the same duration. The Torquay players saved Torquay, claiming the dog did just detracts from them.

Why spoil a good story. I was there that day and can assure you that it helped because the Lincoln result came through with about 5 minutes to go and we were all shouting to the players that a win was not necessary and a draw would do it.
