No, that's not what he's doing. Chucks OTHER last words are what cause this change of behavior. "The truth is, you hurt people Jimmy. You always will. So why feel bad about it? What's the point? I believe this show of emotion is sincere, but if you're not going to change your behavior, why even go through this exercise? Just stop. Honestly, I'd respect you more if you did." Jimmy has realized that Chuck is right. He hurts people, and then feels bad about it, but then keeps hurting people with his antics. It happened with Irene just last episode, and now he realized he caused his brother to commit suicide. He doesn't feel like he has the right to feel bad about it. What's the point? And now, truly, Saul is born. Not in name, but in behavior. He now will try his hardest to not care about the consequences of his actions, which leads to that perfect scene at the very end of this season.
@@sriver004I think it’s a bit more tragic than that. He’s pushing his own guilt onto Howard and burying his feelings. He’s doing the Saul Goodman persona but he doesn’t currently have a name for it yet. He has the grief, guilt, and pain, he just refuses to feel it.
Jimmy saw those guys as chumps and lost all respect for them. "Me? Work for them? I could scam them out of everything!" And shoved his grief aggression on them
I also wonder if he felt kinda slighted by how one of them referred to the figurines as old trash, and if that partly influenced him to act out towards them
No he didn't. He felt reminded of him and his brother and took out that pain on them. This episode shows Jimmy's toxicity by how he copes with pain, he acts cruel when he feels guilty and doubles down.
I think Jimmy just completely emotionally shut down after he found out about the insurance thing. Like he couldn’t deal with that type of guilt at all, so he just pretended like it has nothing to do with him and it’s all Howard‘s fault
This^. Jimmy is in utter denial the whole season pretty much. He's always been a character who isn't great at dealing with emotion. Now his brother went from hating him, to killing himself, to Jimmy finding out he was part of the reason chuck did it. It's all too much for him. He is emotionally avoidant, especially when people bring up chuck around him.
In a broader picture, Howard is always mostly the misunderstood innocent poor guy. He always wished for the best of Jimmy unless Chuck denied, He also wanted Kim to do better, but again Chuck denied and then when Chuck, his partner died, it was all over for him. So when he tried to take the blame, he put even more grief in Jimmy, than he already had.
So much of how Jimmy is acting makes sense when you remember the last thing Chuck ever said to him was “The truth is.. you never mattered all that much to me.” And NOBODY but Jimmy knows that. But it always hurts seeing him take it out on Howard.
I think Howard, of course, thinks what he is doing is for the best, but Kim is also right that what he is actually doing is getting his guilt off his chest and out in the open. But Howard isn't thinking about how telling Jimmy that Chuck killed himself might effect him, in one way or another.
Have you ever lost anyone before? It’s totally normal to talk about these things openly when you’re grieving. With family or friends. Emotions cloud judgment and in your head you’ll replay the last moments over and over. A s*icide adds a whole extra level of pain that leads to self blame. Talking about these things is actually part of a healthy grieving process. What is NOT healthy is exactly what Jimmy does - bottle his emotions and double down on the opportunity to offload any guilt onto someone who is clearly hurt themselves. People are really misreading Kim’s outburst by playing into her attack on Howard and justifying it. When she is clearly projecting any guilt she or jimmy might feel out of self preservation. What she’s doing is even more selfish than what Howard did. It’s even more apparent on rewatch considering we see this behavior of her blindly defending jimmy over and over. Her response was toxic, straight up. And (SPOILERS) remember what she does to Howard’s wife? She does exactly what she accuses victims of doing because she’s a master manipulator like jimmy
@@pencil6965 I mean sure but considering how strained the brothers' relationship was that was not the time to say it. He should've talked to a professional and let everyone grieve. There's also another level of guilt introduced to Jimmy unknowingly cause he did the insurance thing. It's a very complicated situation but what Howard did was understandable but incredibly poor decision on his part
@@pencil6965 "With family or friends" Jimmy being neither to Howard. Howard should have kept it to a shrink or his wife. Pointing out others aren't doing things correctly isn't a defense of someone elses actions. It just means many people are doing incorrect things.
Great to see the reactions are back, when it came to Kim and Howard’s conversation, I completely see where Kim is and understand her perspective. But at the same time I do feel like Howard doesn’t deserve all the bs he received especially given the context of the situation. I can see why people would be angry with him but imo I feel like deep down he meant well despite it coming off as a bit insincere.
I agree with you about Howard. Howard is really taking things personal, believes that he was the reason why Chuck was gone. We don't know much about Howard's personal life, only how he has been portrayed from the vantage point of those around him, and that is an unfair assessment. Jimmy was cold on purpose and was happy to see Howard suffer. It's simply not right.
Some really cool news! Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean are going to work together again, this time in the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross! Bill Burr (Patrick Kuby from Breaking Bad) is also part of the cast!
As always, I'm thrilled that you are watching this show, you are reacting and you seem to really care about the ppl in the show. Chuck was an ass but, he didn't deserve that. Jimmy in the interview killed it, a true salesman and I think he was more interested in the heist and that's why he sabotage that.
Jimmy is not handling well. His job interview outburst is just him realizing nobody likes Jimmy. They like slipping Jimmy (according to Chuck he will always be Slipping Jimmy). They did not offer the job reading his credentials, they loved his circus dance of flamboyance, which annoyed Jimmy. Slipping Jimmy is what becomes Saul Goodman. Thats just my theory.
Jimmy is in denial at the end of the 1st episode. Once he heard about the insurance being what pushed chuck over the edge, he knew it has him that killed Chuck, and over a petty payback. So, he decided to bury it and live as if nothing had happened.
I never thought about this but hearing Chucks accolades in school, head of the debate team, etc. made me realize Jimmy is such a good talker because he always wanted to be like his big brother
Jimmy is a master of avoiding emotions rather than feeling them. And he has some super big emotions about chuck after last season. Then he died. It isnt that jimmy doesnt care, its that he DOES care alot and has no clue how to deal with that so he just avoids any conversation about chuck at all
One story I read a while back that I never considered is that Jimmy was jealous of Howard because Howard basically took over Jimmy's role as Chuck's younger brother. Jimmy's behavior in this regard makes perfect sense.
Jimmy and Kim are reacting the way they are because they were the catalyst for Chuck taking his own life and they can't face that. Howard admitting he may have helped push Chuck over the edge could be considered selfish and trying to get Jimmy to say it wasn't his fault but not any more than anyone who admits to doing something that negatively affected someone else.
I've seen this comment before but: it's crazy good writing when in the last conversation in episode 1 between Jimmy, Kim, and Howard about Chuck's death, everything being said means something different to each character and the arcs they're going on
Nice analysis in the end there about Howard, Kim and Jimmy. They're all coping differently. Note how whenever we see Kim's worse side, it's always when it's about defending Jimmy. Which i think started to really show when she gaslighted Chuck about Jimmy switching the mesa verda address.
There's been security studies conducted that show that if you look like you belong somewhere, nobody asks questions. People have walked into highly secure areas with nothing but a pair of overalls and a toolbox before, nobody says anything as long as you don't look out of place.

Howard really, really is trying to do what's right, in every situation. Rewatching the series with you it's clear that in every situation, he's trying to do what's best for everyone. Which means no party is going to be 100% happy. He's trying to compromise, bridge the gap, and Jimmy and Chuck just refuse to call it a draw. He's stuck in the middle and it's eating away at him. Poor guy just wants everyone to stop fighting and can't figure out a way to make everyone happy. (And yes, maybe he has some pettiness in his actions, but wouldn't you?! Given everything Jimmy, Chuck, and Kim have put him through??)
The first time I watched this show, in the whole Howard vs. Kim situation, I was completely on Kim's side; I still thought that Howard was kind of a jerk, mostly due to the Mesa Verde situation (so much so that I was totally blindsided to hear that most viewers seem to think of him as the nicest guy on the show). And I was completely on her side in that scene in this episode and thought she was right on the money. Now I watch it and see that Howard is mostly a nice guy, who just has a few faults -- social skills being one of them. Even now I still think Kim made some very valid points that Howard, if he had a little more common sense, should have considered. But I also see now that Kim was lashing out at someone she's still bitter towards, and maybe some of what she said was unfair, considering that Howard has a responsibility as the executor of the will to do some of these things (e.g. deliver the letter). So to sum up: Still mostly on Kim's side, but she should have given Howard some leeway.
22:30 i think Jimmie wanted a challenge and when they took him in that easily, he didnt want it cuz it was too easy to get in? but i really dont know, just a thought. 😅 good vid, thanks! see ya next time :)
Jimmy was completely relieved that someone else took responsibility for Chuck's death so he didn't have to. Jimmy has a real problem holding himself accountable for the consequences of his actions. However, I'm kind of Kim's side for that tirade: it was completely inappropriate to say what Howard said on the day of Chuck's funeral. What did Howard expect to get from Jimmy? Absolution? Reassurance that it wasn't his fault? Comfort of any kind? I really like Howard, but he and Jimmy were not friends, and it was selfish. He could have talked with someone who actually cares for him and could help.
Why do you assume that Howard expected to get something from Jimmy? You first make that assumption, and then you base your conclusion that he was selfish on that assumption. That's begging the question. Is it really that unfeasible that he genuinely didn't expect anything and only told Jimmy because he really did think that Jimmy deserved to know?
gus wants hector in the state he is so that he could be the last living salamanca due to gus, before gus kills him, too. remember in BB when gus poisoned everyone in mexico, and then swung eladios chain in front of hector and told him "they're all dead hector" and then lists all the salamancas and eladio, finishing with gus showing hector, jesse as he was the one to shoot his last newphew "joaquin" (pronounced "wahkin"? that is why gus is wants good care for hector; to keep him suffering while gus plots to get rid of the cartel.
I agree, Kim just lashed out at Howard over the top. Though she made some very good points. And that is good writing. If we didn't see Jimmy's real reaction, we would have actually believed her. I think she is just projecting how she would feel in Jimmy's place.
I definitely thought they left the question of Chuck's death open-ended when the last season aired and was surprised when other fans of the show were like "Oh no, Chuck definitely died." Part of it was that Michael McKean was so incredibly good in his role that I thought there was no way they'd want to lose his character at this point in the show. But also, Chuck and Jimmy's relationship was such a big part of the show's DNA that I couldn't imagine the showrunners getting rid of that whole storyline, but I obviously didn't know where they were going with the story, not to mention that Chuck's death at this point in the series helps contribute to Jimmy's "fall" as he turns into Saul for the end of the series.
The season 3 finale left no doubt in my mind. These writers don't pull punches, not ever. Chuck was broken, and it would have cheapened his arc if he just had a close shave and got better. What makes this the best prequel of all time is not the motivation leading to the inevitable, but the unknown fates of the new characters who were never seen during Breaking Bad.
A huge parallel to the season 3 finale of _Breaking Bad,_ when people debated whether Jesse moved the gun and intentionally missed Gale, which is of course not what happened.
@@MLennholm That was so annoying. Even if you told people to look closely to see that it was the camera, not Jesse's arm, that moved, they didn't listen. Wish I could've seen their faces.
This is really the point where Howard goes from villain to victim. It's only now in the latter half of the show that the audience realizes that Howard truly doesn't deserve the shitty cards he's dealt.
Watching this episode for the first time since my mom and grandma died, I'm seeing the characters' reactions to Chuck's death in a new light, and I have a simple explanation/theory for the behavior of Howard, Kim, and Jimmy: they're all grieving. Yes, you can absolutely say that certain actions and words were overreactions or inappropriate or seemingly nonsensical, but that is absolutely how a lot of people react when they're grieving. They're all hurt and emotional and trying to make sense of this senseless event, and yeah, they do strange things and say things they "shouldn't" and take out their emotions on each other. But that all feels so realistic to me. So, from my point of view, it's not about whether Kim or Howard is in the right, because trying to use logic to explain which emotional reaction was "better" is like comparing apples and oranges. My reaction to all of that during this viewing was "Wow, they're really grieving", and, were I in the room during Howard and Kim's confrontation, I would tell them "You're both grieving, and there's no right way to grieve."
Man, let's first talk about Rhea's performance in that scene.🤯 I get chills every time. Kim cares for Jimmy, you can tell. She loves him. That's also her downfall. I believe Howard didn't try to unload his guilt and make himself feel better. I think he was just being vulnerable with someone who he thought would understand. Was it right to do it on the day of the funeral? Hell no. But I don't think he was being malicious in any way. Now, Jimmy... that guy. I think once he saw how Howard felt and that he blamed himself for Chuck's death, he had a weight lifted off of him. Although Howard said Chuck took a turn once he found out about the insurance, Jimmy knew he did that. He knew he was the cause. But because it was Howard who felt this guilt, it made all the difference. He never liked Howard. Howard always took Chuck's side when Chuck was in the wrong. Howard didn't have the balls to tell Chuck that what he was doing to Jimmy was f***ed up. Jimmy has no respect for him. So hearing him blame himself for Chuck's death gave him the energy he needed. It made him happy.
As a fellow sugar addict if you haven’t tried the zero sugar options by Reese’s and Hershey’s I highly recommend it! They still taste really good and are low carb as well
It’s always been hard for me to feel sad about Chuck dying. We’re talking about a guy who hated his brother so much that it literally killed him. You really hit the nail on the head, pointing out that everyone at Chuck’s funeral talked about what a great lawyer he was and how smart he was, but nobody talked about him as a person or how he made them feel. People respect and admire Chuck, but they like Jimmy, and that’s the root of Chuck’s mental illness. Jimmy made Chuck’s wife laugh like she was on nitrous oxide first time they met, so Chuck is already insecure about that, then she expresses her proud disbelief that Jimmy became a lawyer, next thing you know, they’re divorced, and Chuck is making himself so sick with hate and jealousy that he can’t leave the house. Chuck gets triggered by Jimmy being successful, and he’s fine around electronics as long as he’s working to bury Jimmy. Chuck and Jimmy could’ve learned from each other, but all they ever did was feed into their own vicious cycles
Chucks last words to Jimmy were “the truth is, you’ve never mattered all that much to me.” Jimmy’s trying to act in kind.
Yeah I guess she forgot about that part lol
No, that's not what he's doing.
Chucks OTHER last words are what cause this change of behavior. "The truth is, you hurt people Jimmy. You always will. So why feel bad about it? What's the point? I believe this show of emotion is sincere, but if you're not going to change your behavior, why even go through this exercise? Just stop. Honestly, I'd respect you more if you did."

Reassurance that it wasn't his fault? Comfort of any kind? I really like Howard, but he and Jimmy were not friends, and it was selfish. He could have talked with someone who actually cares for him and could help.
Do grieving people always behave perfectly?
@@pencil6965 I didn't say that.
@@MLennholm I asked a legitimate question. He obviously didn't expect Jimmy to react the way he did, so what did he expect?
gus wants hector in the state he is so that he could be the last living salamanca due to gus, before gus kills him, too. remember in BB when gus poisoned everyone in mexico, and then swung eladios chain in front of hector and told him "they're all dead hector" and then lists all the salamancas and eladio, finishing with gus showing hector, jesse as he was the one to shoot his last newphew "joaquin" (pronounced "wahkin"? that is why gus is wants good care for hector; to keep him suffering while gus plots to get rid of the cartel.
I agree, Kim just lashed out at Howard over the top. Though she made some very good points. And that is good writing. If we didn't see Jimmy's real reaction, we would have actually believed her. I think she is just projecting how she would feel in Jimmy's place.
Kim also has some lingering resentment for Howard and the way she was treated at HHM... we will see the fruition of this later in the series...
@@seventhson2151 You may be right. I guess I personally kind of liked Howard so I didn't think about that.
Very happy you are back to BCS … love your reaction
Its really not strange at all. Gus wants to do way worse than just kill Hector.
You should do a Snowfall reaction. Ridiculously underrated show
Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Yeah I noticed you were avoiding it I'm glad you came to your senses
You left us!
I assumed everyone not seen in BrBa died on the Wayfarer jet over Walt's house
A huge parallel to the season 3 finale of _Breaking Bad,_ when people debated whether Jesse moved the gun and intentionally missed Gale, which is of course not what happened.
@@MLennholm That was so annoying. Even if you told people to look closely to see that it was the camera, not Jesse's arm, that moved, they didn't listen. Wish I could've seen their faces.
Thank you for returning!
17:20 IDK if you ever played Apex Legends, but the actor who plays the Dr in this and in Breaking Bad (JB Blanc), is also the Voice actor for Caustic.
Omg She's almost there
the Man the myth himself
Nicest character BB universe 😊
I stan Howard
All my homies love Howard
They still taste really good and are low carb as well
My friend and I started calling the show Breaking Mike after a while. Lol
31:39 I guess she forgot about Gus poisoning the cartel boss ... killing Victor with the box cutter in BB.
those events are several years later in the story
19:42, When I asked a female friend if she thought Jimmy was attractive, she said he has a cute personality.
*I just realized the one printer salesman is creepy Uncle Jack from It’s Always Sunny*
The tiny hands give him away.
Now there's a void on Salamanca's turf. Who's gonna fill it?
Jimmys emotional repression is crazy

Holy shit it’s Charlie’s uncle!
Bingo
We don’t get enough Kim in sweatpants and a tank top
