- Landing at the Bean Fort!
We're shooting an approach into Simikot, Nepal
IMK / VNST- Simikot airport, Nepal. Nestled deep in the Himalaya at 9250ft. This one-way airstrip is in the north-west region. Currently has no vehicle access, and while there are a few tractors in the village, all of them were either hauled in from Tibet, or flown in piece-by-piece in a chopper.
We are carting chickpeas for the UN World Food Program. Our load is 1050kgs. This puts us landing at our maximum landing weight. There are no fuel facilities here, so we need to carry enough fuel to get out and back plus holding plus diversions.
Flight time from Surkhet, our departure airport, is aproximately 45 minutes.
The runway is situated east-west (RWY10-28) there is a steep rise on the western end, and a drop off on the eastern end. Because of the steep rise above the landing end- we need to alter our missed approach proceedure. Instead of a typical fly straight ahead, we need to make an immediate Left turn 180 degrees and head back down the valley. I have only had to go-around once here- for a goat on the runway!
Aircraft: PAC750XSTOL
Registration: 9N-AJB (also 9N-AJF)
Location: IMK / VNST - Simikot, Nepal
Date: April 2011
Enjoy
05:12 Lol, hilarious and informative narration. Priceless for us wondering about those places and approaches. Thank you.
Those mountains looking amazing in background
Interesting - I thought this was a paved runway. Great Flying as always mate!
Amazing stuff, and looks like just a day in the life over there. Thanks for the share.

Awesome! Thank you.
Great vid Jimbo, thankyou for your skill n style plus the different flying arenas from Hawkes Bay
Big effort for a ton of chickpeas. :-)
Very interesting....good on you, you must have enjoyed that bit of flying in your life!
Awesome 🤩
Amazing video! Thank you for sharing. It’s crazy to see how locals are crossing runway😂👍
incredible - i'm amazed that people live so deep in the mountains im so curious as to their history and how they live. do they rely entirely on deliveries such as these?
Yeah it's pretty cool, and wonderful people. They are semi reliant on deliveries. I'll be doing a couple more videos on here, I'll add in what I can. Cheers 👍
Thanks for sharing another excellent and unique video. You've certainly made some 'keeper' memories through your time in Nepal. I'm guessing you'll have experienced some interesting grey area risk assessment choices - hopefully everyone is 100% understanding if you decide something's too risky?
Cheers! Yes, very fortunate to have flown over there. It was great as far as flying in bad conditions and cancelling a flight, noone ever questioned it 👍
C'mon Jimbo. I think we can safely hazard a guess as to why you buy that herbal stuff! 😜😜😂😂 (Recently came across your videos and love them. Beautifully and calmly narrated. Thank you.)
😉😆
Jimbo neat stuff mate. Have you ever looked at Bush Pilot PNG?
Hey mate, yeah many moons ago I was asked to go be chief pilot for a start-up over there. I was also asked to go topdressing in NZ. I chose the latter 😎
Great flinging
A thrill seekers dream.
