  • Friday's Reno air racing schedule started with a masterful demo lap around the Unlimited course by Bernie Vasquez with the restored P-51 "Thunderbird" once owned by Jimmy Stewart. Unlimiteds, T-6s, jets, and other classes filled the day, with modern military aircraft (U-2, A-10, F-15, F/A-18) punctuating the flying schedule when the racing aircraft were preparing for the next event. We alternated between shooting video and stills for different publication outlets; here's what we captured on video.
Turn Up the Sound! Enjoy the roar of Merlins and Allisons as they pass directly overhead from our vantage point at one of the pylons.
Unlimited Heat 2C that morning was won by Brent Hisey flying red, white, and blue P-51D Miss America (Number 11) at a speed of 369.245. Heat 2B was taken by Dan Vance in P-51D Speedball Alice (Number 31) at 326.647. In the afternoon, Heat 2A was won handily by Steven Hinton in the white P-51D Bardahl Special (Number 3) at 439.981. The Yak-11 Rushin' Thunder, Race Number 26, flown by Scotty Crandlemire experienced some landing gear retraction issues and did not finish, but recovered to land safely.
As many of you are aware, two days later during the Sunday race program a collision took the lives of two T-6 pilots. We express our condolences to the families and friends of the fliers involved. National Championship Air Races spokesperson Molly Ellery released information about the tragic crash:
"On Sunday afternoon, around 2:15 p.m., veteran pilots of the T-6 class, Nick Macy and Chris Rushing passed after the T-6 Gold race had ended. Both individuals were longtime participants and staunch supporters of the event and we are heartbroken over this loss.
While the incident happened just outside of the race course, it did not involve any civilians or residential buildings. As is always the case, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are handling the investigation into the crash but we do know that this was not related to racing and happened in the course of landing. Though the families of both pilots wanted us to continue racing and the FAA and NTSB had cleared us to continue, we made the decision to cancel the rest of the event out of an abundance of caution and respect for all of our racers and families.
While there are inherent risks with any motorsport, we work diligently year around to mitigate these risks and safety is our foremost priority. Despite the sad way we have ended our storied tenure in northern Nevada, we want to express our appreciation to the countless fans and volunteers who have supported the event over the years. With the encouragement of our pilots, volunteers and entire air race family and the encouragement of both of these two pilots’ families, we will continue to work to identify a new location for the National Championship Air Races and hope to make that announcement in early 2024.
We want to express our heartfelt thank you to the countless individuals who work to put on an event of this magnitude. This was one of the biggest in the event’s history and we are incredibly grateful to all of the fans who show unconditional support through both the good and troubling times." Great video and great sound...AGAIN! The U-2 was impressive and the F-15 in invasion strips was surprising. Mustang and T-6 sights and sounds were terrific. Thanks as always.

And you are always welcome. There is nothing like the sound of six V-12 warbirds accelerating overhead as they head down the chute to start the first lap.

I thought the F/A18 demo was much better than the F-15 demo.

The '18 crews are darn good, and the presence of the F8F Bearcat was a nice bonus. Thanks for watching and commenting.
