One of my past students, a 7.5 foot Cuban Crocodile (Chiquita) galloping on command. She was owned by a different facility, and I occasionally help other facilities, to train their animals, as well as their staff, to provide better husbandry and better lives for their animals. Chiquita was one of those many animals we had the pleasure of training & working with at another facility.
Check out the Skype interview Chiquita and I did on the show Right This Minute:

@@NIRDIAN1 Not really correct, but you're close!
Dinosaurs and crocodiles share a common ancestor and are both part of the Archosaur-clade together with pterosaurs. (the flying reptiles)
In contrary to what most people think dinosaurs aren't descendants or an offshoot of crocodiles, they're only relatives. If you go back to the time of non-avian dinosaurs you'll not only find crocodiles like we know them today, but also a whole bunch of weird terrestrial crocodylimorph species (carnivorous, but some also herbivorous) that were warm blooded and could indeed gallop. They went extinct together with non-avian dinosaurs except for the Sebecid mesoeucrocodylians (what a name...) that survived in South America all the way up into the Miocene. You should definitely look them up on google images, particularly Barinasuchus, which looks like it should've stayed in the dinosaur era, but in reality didn't.
Modern crocodiles are a different lineage altogether that descended from these terrestrial forms and adapted into a semiaquatic environment. Ironically, because of this, they lost their warmbloodedness and became cold blooded again: you can't lie in wait underwater while going without food for months if you're warm blooded.
They still have a heart that resembles that of a warmblooded, active animal, but it doesn't give them the stamina anymore like you have in active animals.
Galloping like in this vid is for short distances only. No chasing after prey across the open plains and forests like in the days of yore, sadly... And it's only for smaller species like these Cubans or the Australian fresh water crocodiles.

The Critically Endangered Cuban Crocodile is the most terrestrial of all extant crocodilians, having remarkably well developed limbs when compared to the other species of the same order. Unlike other Crocodilians, Cuban Crocs are known to pursue prey well beyond the water’s edge, chasing unlucky animals at considerable speed and for some distance across land. While _Crocodylus rhombifer_ rarely exceeds 3 Meters, its special adaptation for leaping and running makes it particularly dangerous to manage in captivity.

J̅o̅h̅n̅n̅y̅ F̅a̅v̅o̅r̅i̅t̅e̅ Well said, but It’s very important to add that In captivity however, they only remain more dangerous at facilities that undervalue or ignore their intelligence and do nothing in the realm of training with their rhombifers. After training and bridging the communication gap between animal/group and keeper, that danger element can nearly vanish in most cases. It literally becomes a working relationship that can be as safe if not safer than other workplace environments.

That is amazing. I have never seen a croc move like that on land. Most crocs are rather ungainly and clumsy outside of the water. This thing moves like a terrestrial animal, not an aquatic one. It's so sad we have almost completely wiped them out. Cuban crocodiles are so unique and interesting. They say they also display pack behavior and are perhaps the most intelligent of all crocodiles.

    • @NathanSweeting
      @NathanSweeting  8 лет назад +397

I've actually seen the teamwork firsthand! Many years ago at a park I used to work at, I'll never forget, in a group of 5 animals, the male kept the preys attention while the alpha female and the subordinate females hid and surrounded the prey (making a gauntlet, cutting off any exits so the prey had to go between any two crocs to escape) moments later they all rushed in, 3 in full gallop. I WAS THE PREY, and cleaning their pool. My only exit was an 8 foot rock wall waterfall that apparently I can climb like Spiderman! The really scary but exciting thing was, after that day there was always one croc that would climb the rocks and hide in the waterfall pool on cleaning day every time. Talk about a learning curve and learning from their mistakes hahaha

Crocodilians are generally more like dinosaurs than any other kind of lizard, and were at one point actually built for terrestrial life. It would be reasonable that galloping or mammal-like behavior such as this could be exhibited in at least one modern representative.

Unfortunately you’re perception and misinformed opinion of these animals reflects the majority of what humans have believed for centuries, but it’s incorrect nonetheless and eventually, one day, will be common knowledge throughout the mainstream generally public. They are intelligent... Unfortunately her name has far less creative origins. “Chiquita Bananas 🍌”… that’s it. Bananas are yellow, the name is Spanish, end creativity there 😂

It's important to note that, while crocodilians are fast and powerful, they build up lactic acid WAY faster than humans. While a crocodile or alligator could move this fast, they'd only be able to do so for a few moments at best before completely exhausting themselves.
On the other hand, they're ambush predators, soooooooo...

    This is absolutely incredible.
Knowing you still comment here, would like to ask a question.
How long does it generally, in training, take for a croc to correctly respond to an order once it has been understood?

Always happy to answer questions. And to answer yours; It varies depending mostly on the individual animal and their specific personality. Just like people, they’re all different and learn at different paces, some are smarter than others too. Ultimately the learning curve is surprisingly sharp and I’ve had results, with starting basic commands and behaviors, ranging from under a minute to up to an hour.
