  • OSB is strong and functional but the finish definitely leaves something to be desired. In this video we brighten the garage up with some paint! Let's take the aesthetic from cardboard box to EPIC.
Throughout the video I cover my takeaway tips from our painting experience. We use block filler primer and paintable silicone caulking to get a smooth finish on the OSB walls.
BONUS PROJECT: stick around to the end for a quick and easy DIY project that where we create clean finish on OSB wall corners using stair nosing.

Tip: If the building is going to be used as a shop, put the rough side of the OSB towards the shop. It acts as a noise cancelier kind of like a sound studio. it's harder to paint, but functions better for the intended use. I am building a woodshop right now, but I'm using 3/4" ply on the walls to handle the load of all the things attached to it, and the abuse it will take from flying objects and swinging boards. The fire risk is obviously higher with wood, so make sure to take that into consideration.

I'm considering OSB for my barndo ceiling. It's super loud when it rains. Your opinion, smooth side up or down for maximum sound deadening? Mineral wool will be between the OSB and the spray foam insulation as well.
      Thanks.

@@dteam8602 If you have mineral wool and spray foam towards the tin, I would put the smooth side towards that and the rough side into the room. That should stop noise inside the building from bouncing around. Good luck!

The whole time watching this made me ache for an airless paint sprayer, haha. Perfect job for a sprayer! I wonder how a drywall skim coat would've worked out. Not sure if a drywall skim coat in a garage would last or not. Interesting project. Also foam would've worked for that edge and spackling the edge of the OSB if you ever don't want the nosing there. 🤔 Nice work, looks great! 😎

Looks very nice and I do like to look of OSB. I used OSB sheeting in my workshop (old brick barn, put up studs, rockwool then OSB but covered everything with green sheet rock. Using sheet rock you can tape and mud, paint easily and most important for my workshop, lower the fire risk. You also have some thermal mass to help maintain temperature. The painted sheet rock is also much easier to clean. With the OSB behind the sheet rock my walls are strong and significantly less chance for sheet rock damage.

    • @Lolatyou332

only problem I have with sheet rock in a garage, is that more than likely with the shifts in temperature the drywall mud will crack anyway.

I used standard kilz interior / exterior primer and it looks better than this did.
I'd recommend in the future to sand down the edges between each sheet of OSB so that they are flat, then when caulking, use a 1.5 inch putty knife to apply the caulk smooth and hide the seams entirely (you can use your finger on the corners) .
Additionally, I'd recommend applying a liberal amount of primer as well as applying 3-4 coats in total, additionally, I'd recommend at least running over it with a pole sander at the minimum starting on the 2nd-3rd coat before the 4th primer.
It will still have some texture but you'll get rid of most of the larger anomalies that can make it look bad versus just making it look like a slightly textured wall.

Yep, to get it smooth you have to do many coats of primer, sand between primers and use a 1.5 inch putty knife for caulking the seams.
If you want it to actually be 100% smooth only possibility really is to use drywall mud (quick set, don't use standard mud) and do a skimcoat on everything after sanding down everything.

Observation ( Suggestion ) Method to the Madness
Although there is a Wide Spread ( Mis-Conception ) on the Proper way to do a project such as this. Take it from someone who has been in the industry for over 5 plus decades and counting. Be it Industrial, Commercial, Retail, Residential, a true ( D.I.Y ) Never attempted before situation or not. The BELIEF that ( Pre-Cutting ) Or Timing In ) Prior to Rolling is a False Hood. WHY ? Think of it in terms of Square Feet versus Square Inches . Now, The art of Spraying is far more advanced then many will tackle. B.U.T.T. Rolling out directly from the Five gallon Paint Buckets is the Next Critical Step.
A L W A Y S Be Sure to Inter Mix Buckets Completely . Do NOT matter if it is a Off the shelf or Custom color option. More Ill- Fated paint Jobs have been traced back to Mis-Matched Rolling ( BRUSHED ) Touch -Ups then ever one could imagine.
REMEMBER ( " In the End - It All Goes Back to the Beginning " )
Prep Work makes the Plan Work.
Think of a paint roller as covering 12 inches times the amount of paint loaded into it.
    Say on average about 4 feet . 12 x 48 = 576 Square inches per application.
Compare that to a typical 2, 3 , or 4 inch wide brush.
    2 x 2 = 4 x 6 = 24 Square inches being covered per application .
    better yet. 3 x 2 = 6 x 6 = 36 square inches . Go one size larger
    4 x 2 = 8 x 6 = 48 square inches per dip into the paint can with an extra wide brush.
HOW Much effort does it take then to say cover a 8 foot high wall. By 12 foot long.
Pre - Cutting the top, Bottom Sides, around doors , switches, Windows and more ?
8 feet times 12 feet equals 96 Square feet .
BUTT the Perimeter is a lot more then that ( 8 feet high ) both ends sides. 2x 8 = 16 Lineal Feet. Plus add in top and bottom of 12 feet each. 12 x 12 = 144 Lineal Feet.
Without any other objects or reasons to increase the amount already stated.
Mathematically is shows you would be Hand Brushing 16 Plus 144 = 160 lineal Feet of space by hand.
Before any rolling or Top coating occurs.
Here is how that plays out with going directly from the bucket with a roller.
Extention pole or not. It does pretty much stay the same.
What Varies is the type of NAP or Depth of it being used.
That 8 foot high by 12 foot long wall rolled out .
96 square feet total . Most of the time you can get within an inch or two from the Outside surface with a roller and steady hand.
Covering about 4 square feet or more per dip in the bucket.
96 square feet divided by 4 equals ( 24 ) times give or take.
That is the exact opposite of Pre - trimming or Cutting in only a few inches per dip in the can.
Think Harder ( WORK SMARTER )
This is about Performance. Not Lip or Some ones Off the Wall Opinion.
Spraying will give you the most coverage with the Least Application effort.
YET, there is a lot of Pre - painting prep that goes into it.
Rolling directly out of a Five Gallon Bucket with the Proper screen in place is Really the Best of All Worlds.
Wide coverage area per dip in the bucket. Closer to the edges then simply Pre-Trimming will ever equate to . Less product and better Time saver in the end.
Have seen plenty of ( D.I.Y. ) and Home improvement shows try to claim.
This is How the professionals do it.
In Over 5 plus decades of ( Direct ) application of products across all levels of possibilities.
No One worth there Time and effort will Ever be Found that Advocates ( TIME ) Versus ( EFFORT ) Equals Profit by Pre-Trimming or Cutting in before rolling / spraying.
YOU will do what you will do . Yet, Looking at the math.
Unless you have an unlimited Budget and more free time then all others on the face of the planet combined. Your Dollar for Dollar Expenses .
Will Bury you deep within the core of the earth for the same or lesser quality ( I ) or most others could do ( Blind Folded ) and Half asleep.
Share this clip with others. Unless the industry has completely changed in the last 12 hours. Painting is about Getting the coating on the surface. Not about seeing the calories burned in doing so otherwise.
Dollar for Dollar ( Hour Per Hour ) A good painter can both roll ( THEN ) trim out a room solo ( Faster and be more ) Evenly covered with less waste then any ( D.I.Y. ) How to Pre - trim ( Pre Cutting ) effort s will ever amount to .
Muscle Memory, Tried and True ( Industry Standards ) Equal Better Results in Less time with Fewer issues and More Physical , Mental, and Emotional Stability .
People copy others thinking they know better.
Take it from someone who not only made there living doing this 6 to 7 days a week over 5 plus decades. Being Wise beyond your years will serve you better then following an How to video by a First timer ( Every Time )
This is all Meant to Prove a point.
    Math Does NOT Lie.
It solidifies the Reasons laid out for you to read and understand.
