I have a jupiter 8. My dad bought one when I was 13-14 years old. He had it connected to a tube amp and told me all about the history of it. Showing me pictures of all the bands using it in their live set ups. Years ago I learned that the beginning pad sound in thriller was a jupiter 8. I’m 30 now and just this year my dad gifted me the jupiter 8. It’s in my home studio now connected to a 1978 20 track studio master mixer board. It sounds so huge! Running it in unison…. Omg… So fortunate to have this machine. Replaced the patch battery a couple years ago and imported the original patches. Now the only problem it has is one of the oscillators detune after awhile. Maybe a temperature related problem for a transistor? Anyway it is really cool to see you explain how thriller came about. My sons favorite song. One day I’ll be giving him the Jupiter 8 :)
So many things had to line up for this record to turn out the way it did -- the right personnel with the right connections among many other things. Kismet. Love this series, please continue and don't be afraid to get deeper into the technical/engineering/synthesis aspects.
Thank you sir, because of this video I now own 2 Linn’s!! One is getting serviced, the other, I had someone burn me the extra LM-1 chips, and the 808 clap (which by the way won’t fit one only 1 chip) and immediately I can hear the subtle differences of the drum beats. If that all was in the demo done by Rod then that is absolute pure brilliance!! From here, moving forward, it’s like I would prefer to keep in the LM-1 snare, hats, and congas,, I really love that staple Linn clap, cowbell and rim sounds as well from the machine itself. After owning an 808 for many years, followed by the DMX. The Linn Drum’s are pure asset to my collection!!!!
Hi, Anthony. Sorry to bring up something that is quite off topic, but yourself along with Brian Banks composed the soundtrack for a cartoon in the mid-1980s known as Ghostbusters (later to be known as Filmation's Ghostbusters). I know it's an impossibility to ever see a release of this music, I doubt there is any chance the masters would still exist, but it is one of the best electronic scores I have ever heard in my life. It is simply amazing, and I'm always so sad that I can never have any of those wonderful tracks to listen to. Being quite certain that you would not have any elements remaining from this soundtrack yourself (it may even just be a distant memory by now), I guess all I can do is thank you for that wonderful work I have loved for so long.
A Linn Drum made of 100% PURE UNOBTAINIUM. I saw one of these for sale at Freedom Guitar in San Diego 20 years ago with a "missing chip" for like $1,000 I believe. Yeah... I wasn't in the club. LOL!
So either this blows up by next week or it will take 5+ years. Anyway still very interesting to know that you could quite literally swap out instruments by swapping some (pretty friggin huge) chips on the board.
big love Master!.im confused...when u say /LinnDrum hihat was not bright ,so we used LM1 hihat? / so LM1 doesnt mean LinnDrum? or dirrirent Version? pls tell me ,thanks!
There's so much technique and theory on display in this video and it isn't even two minutes long!
That Linn Drum kick is perfect
Amazing. I always wondered why the clap was not the original Linn Clap. And now we know. Brilliant.
This is phenomenal! Thank you for sharing this history with us!

Greatest family heirloom lmao. That's awesome.
From what I know, it should have reliable oscillators assuming it's fixed by a reputable techn.
Fabulous that’s an amazing historical event well done.❤

Would you be able to confirm composing on this series? You’re listed on IMDB, but uncredited on the show.

Here you go !! this is the official version of the Thriller Drums 🔥❤
By the creators themselves !
Thanks ❤
Love to see the technology. 😍
Thank you
This is so fun! I have this Linndrum emulation that can read old EPROM chips images, I'm gonna try to replicate the exact kit...

Wow. Great story.
I wish we could still be this hands on with our technology, everything is software driving.
Nice
Would love to see more info about the Linn Drum!!

Amazing, thanks for sharing this with the world! Do you know what drum machine was used for the snare of Smooth Criminal?
❤❤❤❤

hahaha my name is Brad Cox thats wild
is there a full video? I would die to see it!

Is there a full-length version of this ??
Who did the guitar on this album? I absolutely LOVE these videos btw, thanks!!!
From top of my head I’d say Steve Lukather
How was the groove applied to the drum pattern? Was there a particular swing setting?
Amazing! That's cool how the 808 clap was put on the rom, I hadn't realised the 808 clap was sample based. Are the congas from the linndrum also?
It's not. They would have sampled the 808 clap and burnt that sample to EPROM.
@@EstuaryMistsheyyyy. Nice to see you here. Your cover of It’s A Sin by Pet Shop Boys really helped me with my own.
Hey Anthony, great. From which Video is this short from? I cannot find it in the video list.
Ah, found it by myself: ruclips.net/video/E_MkafWu4d8/видео.html
It’s from my podcast Stories in the room
