In a lot of Korean manwhas and dramas, the college boys are sometimes like around that age and it can be confusing to international readers. Partially, it’s because some people decide to do the mandatory military service asap but it’s also cause they’ll use korean age instead of international age (for any one unfamiliar with it, in Korea culturally, babies are 1 when born and you add a year every new year so your Korean age is 1-2 years older than your international age depending on the time of the year and your birthday)

    • @tam9966
      @tam9966 Год назад +45

To add: college is not mandatory in South Korea because their high school (Grades 10-12) can already be specialized depending on what school they go into, but it is uncommon for people not to go to college. Some people do their service first. Some work to get money for their education first. Some go straight to uni if they pass their SATs ✨

Anyone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong but but this is basically what I’ve learned from like Korean language tiktoks and watching way too many kdramas 😅: I think Jaeyoung was happy when Sangwoo called him hyung because you normally don’t call every older male hyung. In work/school, you would call a senior student or coworker sunbae. So by using hyung, it’s confirmation to Jaeyoung that they actually have a close relationship now 😄

I am not that clear but I think that the reason that they graduate late is because of military. It's compulsory in Korea for men and most people choose to do it when they are in college. And they also have a very convoluted way of telling their age, like they are already 1 when they are born and instead of their birthday they age in the beginning of a year

im not rlly justifying what happened but 1 the manhwa being an adaptation has to omit a lot of the thought processes that go with what happened that actually more properly build up to what happened (particularly in how either character perceived their relationship, partly, jy was shown particularly angry cos they had that sort of mutual agreement but jy thought sw was so socially inconsiderate as to go on what very much seemed like a date with jihye amidst that or smth), some scenes are omitted even... theres an insane amt of detail in the novel really, and
2 i personally cannot relate to physical attraction but ive seen it strongly and its manifestations in others so when its portrayed in fiction i think its actually realistic to see how the grey area is trudged instead of just expecting a perfect kind of sexual interaction with perfect etiquette for all ppl in all works of fiction (in the end jaeyoung does become much more considerate, admitting that hes normally a p selfish guy, and his character is really emotionally driven first b4 rational cos of his domestic environment). humans arent so easy to understand and theres so many factors in play here lol
i feel like just reducing it to 'its a common theme in the genre and it was put there just cos its a problematic trend that shouldnt be there cos its unnecessary' or some sentiment like that is unfair to say particularly for this work cos of the sheer amt of detail in it accurate to common teachings in psychology (so im not justifying the act but defending the story and why it happened there). maybe ive just been exposed to much more bl that is very consenting or that actually explain the nuance of these occurrences in whatever way and acknowledge the faults in their actions in the end that i can say this opinion
its true that its a common trope (mostly Was common) but the genre's evolved tremendously from the 90s--early 2010s imo lol so much that they include themes of consent with much more care and consideration now. there are reasons for the tropes earlier in bl's history and sure whatever even i dont like those works. but if those who consumed and made bl back then saw it as the best way to sexually liberate themselves w/o harming real ppl then we have to understand that as well
im sorry i just hate black and white thinking

The show is so good. Korean BL shows are typically very very very tame. They only get one kiss to end the show and it's always a tiny peck. Their stories usually revolve more around their connection as friends than as lovers, until the final episode also. There are not many which break from that format and Semantic Error is one of them. I appreciated that they really went for it and told the story as accurately to the comic as possible.

I decided to start reading the webcomic because of your recommendation (also THANK YOU), and being in the spectrum myself, I'm pretty sure Sangwoo is on the spectrum too.
Rigid routines, sensory issues (like the fact that he doesn't feel the taste of food much, can't function unless he's in a very specific spot, and he can't focus around the color red because it's too loud), sucks at social cues and interactions, has difficulty recognizing faces... these (alongside many others I noticed) are all markers of the autistic spectrum LOL.

Hello, I came across your video while watching other things and just wanted to clear up a few things that are probably hard to understand because of the difference in Korean culture. By the way, I'm not Korean but I've seen a lot of kdramas so I know a few things haha.
The age difference: We are going to assume that because it is translated into English they keep their ages according to their date of birth, but in case they did not do it, basically everyone in Korea has a year at birth because in their culture they count the months that you were in your mother's womb, on top of that every first of January everyone celebrates another year of life so almost everyone in Korea is one or two years older than the rest of the world. Also military enlismetn is mandotory for every man in Korea and its about 2 years so if you go into the military at 20 when you get out of the service you're probably 22 or 2.
The Hyung: Ok, I imagine that if you read this you realized that age is a super important topic in Korea, the older you are in a university group, work, even friends, the more authority you have, therefore those who are younger than you they are not socially allowed to talk to you informally.
Of course there are cases in which older people do not exercise this type of social norm and ask their colleagues to address them in informal whay, but not to go into details, basically Hyung is the word used by a younger man to refer to an older man, ONLY, if these two are close. Basically you can't tell Hyung to just anyone they have to have a relationship similar to what you would have with your family or your partner. The fact that he called him Huyng affected him so much because he was implicitly assuring him that he considers him more than just a friend and by calling him Huyng he lets him know that he has earned his respect. I highly doubt Sangwoo would call anyone Hyung in his life, unless it was literally his older brother.

I think it's similar to Omniscient Reader or Solo Leveling but I'm not sure since I've never read those series. You'd never expect the romance between the characters to be so pure and supportive of each other especially since it's a BL with dark themes. Super underrated

Okay so I wanted to share an experience of mine. Actually it's not JUST glasses. So I go to class everyday wearing mask, glasses, no makeup. So not all people have seen my face in my class. But like 60% know how I look w/o mask.
So we had an event at our college and ofc everyone dress up. So did I. I didn't wear mask, no glasses, full face makeup, coloured contacts.
I was like the 2nd person to get to class and I see a classmate. We're not that close but still we've talked and she have seen my face. So I smile and start talking. She also talk but awkward. So she ask "but are you in this class?" I was confused at some point. And I said "Yeah I am. I am sarah(fake)". And she was like what?. So another 2 people arrive. And mind you I'm famous in class. For wearing mask all the time😅. So I start to talk to them too like asking for their help some stuff and all. But then the other girl ask "So is this your cousin or stg(to the 1st girl)?" And she said "No it's sarah". And we all laughed about it. And they said how they couldn't recognize me as I look so different. And they said how I cover up and make myself look not so good😂 just in a joking way.
Yeah.. safe to say I had to introduce myself to everyone again.

OMG, I just read this ! I didn't watch the video yet but I liked this comic even tho I found some of the ways the plot moved forward kinda uncomfortable . The drama is really good, It only has 8 episodes but still captures everything I love abut this comic

6:41 they are internet cafes (known as pc bang in korea!) a lot of people go there to game but some also work or do extra studying (some kdramas have people doing shady research at these places lol) they usually have fast wifi, fast cpu systems and tons of fast food :)

Hey thanks for the emetophobia warning! The gag didn’t bother me at all, I thought you were gonna show like an image of someone vomiting or something like that, but just the fact that you were mindful of that makes my heart so happy. Having severe emetophobia makes life and consuming media really hard at times, and I wish emetophobia warnings were more common in media. Nothings ruins my day more than getting an unexpected image or sound of vomit or vomiting out of nowhere, so again thanks for being mindful of us!! Love your content❤️

pleeease watch the drama!! it's really really good and everything happens a lot faster than in the webcomic lol there are 8 episodes and i think it goes into half of the second season of the webtoon (?? not sure), most of the main scenes were kept the same and it's really fun to watch! if/when you do i'd love to watch a video on it!!

I get distracted so easly but somehow you made me listen to all of the story LMAOMNGVWSAJ. Anyways Frederic you should watch "To My Star" ( it has 2 seasons, its kinda small, Lgbtq+ friendly and its a k-drama). Also you might cry a lot by watching it ( especially in season 2...) . Tbh its kinda cheesy ( just like every k-drama) but in a good way... Its a really good show that gets you to experience every emotion that both of them have and it shows the struggles that they have as two gay people in a society, that they arent accepted. Also what I liked about it, is that they werent any stereotypes about gay people ( like the "bad" ones, idk if you get me)... I think you will have fun watching it!!

They're older than you'd expect because of 2yrs mandatory military service, which men in South Korea typically take after their first year of college. Also in Korea the school year starts in March, so you start 1st grade when your six months older than someone in the U.S.
