Clearing Forest for New Buildings, The Chainsaws I Use and Preparing for Maple Sugar Season

  • An unseasonably warm and dry December allows me to clear massive beech trees to prepare for my next major building projects. I explain what chainsaws I use and I use a tractor to move a heavy maple syrup boiler into place. I explain why I'm building three more structures in this location and how I plan on keeping busy and productive when it's time to shelter in place.

Great video as always! Epic tree fall. I was listening to hear the popping sound to see if you would have to cut any more but, no it worked out perfectly. Callie's love and devotion to you is obvious. She has to make sure that you're ok. I'm looking forward to maple syrup making time on your new stove.
I hope your wife is feeling better soon.

Love the new intro. Also I enjoy seeing you doing the less romantic things like moving the logs for a possible future space for a new setup, and seeing that sometimes you just move forward on tedious tasks without being perfectly sure of all outcomes. Makes you seem more human and relatable. Thanks for the video, which I know will get me off my duff afterward to do likewise here at our place. Happy New Year's Eve to you and yours🎉

Great allies to bring to the fight for freedom...I hope you acknowledge the God who made nature and are allied with Him as well...I refuse to put my brain on the hook of evolution it is far to organized to be random...This way of life you present to others is therefore the only LOGICAL option! I hope your wife feels better soon, and I hope you don't get the flu as well. If it's anything like the one I have that's been going around BC, you'll have about a week of splitting headaches to look forward to. I am not the type to go to the doctor, but I've definitely been downing the Sinus DayQuils like they're candy - my kidneys probably hate me by now.

I have 2 Stihls that my father left me, he processed Australian sandelwood around Kalgoorlie, Western Australia for 40 years. Sandelwood is a hardwood in Oz. He had 8 Stihl's and 2 Huskie's all great chainsaw's. Of the 2 Stihl's I have 1 is now 45 years old and the other is 32 years old, both were realy well looked after and still have great compression and I use them both every winter, though they are a lot heavier than the latest models.

I used to work at the bear trap resort in Northern Minnesota and they used to make maple syrup every spring.the shed they made it in was called the sugar shack which had a cupola on a pull which raised up when in use to let out all the steam we had a cast iron stove with a stainless steel evaporator vat built on top with old stainless milking line going from the vat to a small milk bulk tank to hold the unprocessed sap and we hauled the sap in small plastic tanks on the back rack of 4x4 atv that held sap from several trees and we dumped that through a filter on the bulk tank with a 3inch detachable hose to the atv tank

You need plans and goals especially in a retirement situation. Something to get out of bed. You get anxious at all when you start clearing for a new build? I know I do. I feel anxious and the only way to solve it is to put your head down and work towards the task at hand. Realizing there's a lot of work ahead of you it is somewhat motivating but also discouraging when you look at the big picture. Small steps you can move a mountain

Hi Shawn - you forgot to give details of your other saw - I'm a Husqvarna loyalist too and like you I have the 390 XP which is a cracking unit. I use it for work daily and it's got plenty of grunt as and where you need it. Super reliable and rarely have problems. If they're maintained well you'll have a trusty friend for life. A chain kept sharp and a bar regularly dressed and you can't go wrong. Kickback is the constant threat of course and you're no doubt particularly wary of it being as isolated as you are out there. I'd be interested in your choice of second saw - I keep a 345 XP for any lighter work which is an amazing, powerful little saw and a bit easier on the arms. But it still packs a fearful punch! I'm wondering if you make up your own chains being as multi-talented as you are?
Really good to see you're doing so well - all the best for '24.
