Hello Mark, i'd just like to let you know how much I have enjoyed watching your lathe and workshop videos. As a fellow cornishman/cornish living man :-) who is currently eagerly awaiting the arrival of a union graduate from london too. In trying to resaerch the tool, I have found your videos the best. I hope you continute to put your videos online. You've also helped me to understand callibration of the mitre saw in a much clearer way which was something I was struggling with. So very grateful for the content you have put onlile and hope you cintinue to do so. I'm sure it helps more people than you can imagine. Take Care, Pete.. Cornwall

Hello Pete, sorry for my tardy reply. Unfortunately time is short and these vids take ages to make. People really dont understand jyst how much effort goes into them!
That and all the trolks you get slagging you off for spelling mistakes, kinda makes you wondercwhy you bother. I have lits of interesting prijects coming up who knows, i might video some of them! Maybe we will meet in the shire at some point!

hi great vid , just wired my union graduate up and i think i may need to change the bearings , so a video on changing them would be great

Hi Glad you enjoyed it. The bearing vid has been on the list for a while but ive so many others in production that it wont be done for a long time yet. Certainly not quickly enough to help you. When you do them, make yourself a jig to drive them out and drive the new ones in, i just used a cut off broom handle with an 18mm ply disc cut to the correct size. Also although you dont want too much end play in the shaft it easy to fit the bearing too close together and they will warm up and get stiff if you do that, so keep an eye out for that when you run it up.

    Great video, thanks Mark.
I have problems setting my Graduate up and to get the headstock and spindle properly aligned. It's not a matter of leveling I don't think, but the fact that is has the two aligning pins missing - the pre owner must have cut them off for some reason. Do you have any clue on how to approach that problem? If it wasn't so heavy things would be much easier I reckon 😂

Mark great video i had a lot of trouble taking off bearings ..but i did it .. could You describe how You put it together ? some quick step by step? iIam afraid i would damage something. I have manual which state bearings could be knock out but in my case i had to use bearing puller and for back of lathe i had to make my own puller . So i am afraid to use so much force to put it back together. Thanks in advance

HI Peter, yes i had a lot of trouble with them as well! i Was going to
make a separate video on changing the bearings, but i simply don't have
enough time to make vids on stuff that i don't need to do! Anyway, its
been a long time since i made this video so the specifics of replacing
the bearings elude me at the moment. What ill do is look at the original video, it will be in normal time and should detail the process, if i filmed it all. i'm not back home until next monday however, and you may have it back together again.
What i do remember is that i thought i should make a jig to re fit the bearings. whe fitting bearings in a situation like this o would normally use a socket to drive the bearing home. the socket would sit on the outer case of the bearing and so put no pressure on the bearing race. Because i don't have a socket in the diameter of the bearing i decided to cut a circle of 18mm ply and use that with a mallet to drive the bearing in equally.
Once id cleaned the bearings and the housings for them they actually were not that tight to refit. I think that because they had been in place for so long removing them was made difficult.
Its a bit late now, but before removing id advise anyone to measure the exact position of the bearing face relative to the housing face. it took a lot of messing around to get the bearings in the right position to avoid end play but also not to make them too tight. Although i thought id got the spacing correct, when i spun the lathe up the bearings heated up and started to bind and i had to adjust them.

No problem, dont worry about the step on the pulley. once you have the vfd you will more likely as not never move the belt on the pully at all!

I'm looking for a short bed version that has made it my way on eBay.

Thanks Michael, Have you actually found one or are you looking? ive never seen a short bed one, do you mean the bowl turning version?Mark

+Mark von kanel The one with the short bed but I'd want the bowl wheel too.
I'm in South Carolina so the odds of finding any Harrison are slim-none.
Terrible because I have a bandsaw that I want to cannibalize the wheels from that also has a VFD as well as a 1&1/4 HP motor.

+Mark von kanel I'd love to but it's on eBay as local pickup only I did estimate the shipping at about a thousand dollars though.
They are worth refurbing but it's steep for me to buy it sight unseen.

If you insist on telling your 'diminishing' amount of viewers how to do things , at least spell it correctly.
