    • @RijuChatterjee
      @RijuChatterjee 4 года назад +55

      @CL Melonshark Well I'm sure that, say, Bosch, have more than one engineer working on every new drill they develop. The rover actually probably has way fewer engineers working on it than say, something like a mass-market SUV. Where there's money, there's man-hours. Where there isn't money, there's the government.

    • @thesteaksaignant
      @thesteaksaignant 4 года назад +146

      @@tangerinetech5300 a motor than needs to operate in extreme conditions of low pressure, very fine Martian dust and handle an extreme range of temperature between day and night without failing, while meeting the performance requirements and consuming the lowest amount of electric power to save it for the other components. It must also survive the vibration and shocks of take of and reentry and landing.
      Yeah, putting 1 engineer on that doesn't seem overkill to me

    • @tangerinetech5300
      @tangerinetech5300 4 года назад +1

      @@thesteaksaignant I mean they don't specify if he does all of that or if it's a team working on the motor and he literally works on just the motor. To be honest I find it hard to believe that he would be in charge of all of that for the motor but I would hope he does other stuff than just make sure the motor for the drill is at its best possible performance cause that's probably pretty dull work after a while.

    • @thesteaksaignant
      @thesteaksaignant 4 года назад +62

      @@tangerinetech5300 Slow down for a sec, you're the only one saying he works on a single motor, so I checked his linkedin profile and here's what it says:
      "Designing the spindle, spindle transmission, and core break actuation systems for the Mars 2020 rover’s sampling and caching subsystem"
      So there's more to it than just one motor. However, I stand by my point that even designing a single motor for extreme conditions is a very complex task and I don't see why it would be dull.

      KSP is great fun and works well for what it is. The real thing though is far more complex.
      KSP uses patched conic physics instead of actual N-Body physics.
      This is so the game can actually run and still be enjoyable to the masses.
      If actual physics were used you'd have Lagrange points, orbit destabilisation and deterioration, and lots of headaches.
      Though, it would make certain more advance maneuvers possible.

      @BenyAU at least orbits are elliptical there. Spaceflight Simulator uses circular orbits, but the next update it's gonna be more realistic.
      For earth with an eccentricity of 0.016 who cares. But for Mars with eccentricity of 0.09 that a problem.

I'm a truck driver myself, and i play both ETS and ATS, and my reasons are that it's actually a lot different from real world, at least here in Europe, since in the games you don't have to worry about documents, driving times, rules, regulations, you can just drive... plus, most of the drivers aren't actually self-employed, and are confined to the same 10 to 15 places where they go every week or so, while in the game you can create your own company (that is exceedingly difficult in Europe) and go where your heart wishes
