Crows are amazing. I don't know how this was determined, but supposedly crows can recognize up to 500 human faces. I had a wild pet crow that visited me daily for treats for years. I had to move and I still miss her. So intelligent, they are.

When I was 12 years old in 1962 I found 2 crows that fell from the nest: I nurtured them, taught them to fly; they stayed with me for the summer. In Minnesota, a block from the Mississippi River. They would fly the River Valley at night. In the morning I would wrap on my window air conditioner and they would fly right into my bedroom. In October they migrated south. To my astonishment; the next April, I awoke to the both of them pecking at my window, on the air conditioner!! They stayed for the entire summer again before migrating south the next October. They were truly part of the family of seven kids and our parents were just as proud of them as their own children!!! Fascinating species of the bird world!!! Your video brought back some precious memories!! Thanks for sharing ❤

This is amazingly similar to a robin my mom raised when we were kids. It was a helpless fledgling when it appeared one morning, of all things, pecking on our front door. We thought we heard knocking, and Mom opened the door to find this tiny bird standing on the threshold. She took it in and fed it some cat food, and later she dug worms for it. It lived with us for the summer, mostly in the house, but during the day it would fly around outside, staying close to my mother while she did her outdoor tasks. In the fall, the bird flew away and we thought that was the end of the story. But next spring, to our amazement, it came back, pecking at the basement window. It lived with us again for the summer; by then it was pretty independent, but my mom still dug worms for it for old time’s sake, and it rode around on her shoulder. An old towel over her shoulder was a standard part of her apparel. I don't know if you could toilet train a crow, but apparently you can't do the same for a robin. I think I remember it came back for a third season, but I'm not sure.

Very protective of their young, my ol yellow tomcat climbed a cedar tree to have a look at a nest of babies, mama crow worked him over good, the air was full of yellow hair, he fell out of the tree onto his back of all things, then two more crows got in on the action and escorted him back to the house pulling out more hair. Birds, in general, are pretty long-lived animals. There are interesting stories about scientists finding ospreys and albatross that they tagged decades before still going strong. Even smaller, more hunted birds like pigeons, who can live 30 years, and starlings who can live up to 20...if in a low risk and healthy situation, can get surprisingly old. That's why parrots are the most well-known example of a long-lived bird because captivity is low risk, and that's the most common place to come across a parrot. Nature is really harsh, though, and birds are pretty fragile animals overall. The reason why so many birds have multiple babies per clutch and multiple clutches per year is because there is often loss. Luckily, birds are all around very intelligent compared to most animals, so they can rely well on their wits to keep them safe.

One really interesting thing about animal lifespans is that a lot of species have the potential to live for quite a long time, but the merciless danger of the wild usually has them die quite quickly. In hindsight it's weird from an evolutionary standpoint since there are a lot of other animals and insects that have evolved with this in mind and have extremely short lifespans pertaining to average life expectancy.

Carolina Waterfowl are an amazing group! I remember in 2000 or 2001, she was at a Lake Park event telling people about her rescue. I’m so impressed with how hard they work. I lived in the Community across the street from them and they were always working there.
