@GMAceM this website you posted doesn´t work with my cedula.I don´t see any enforcement on the roads as far as speed limits, driving at dusk with no headlights, running through stop signs, no noise ordinances on anything, etc., there needs to be severe consequences when breaking the law.To me, just my opinion, Ecuador is a live and let live society, What can I take to the electric company to make sure Iḿ not overcharged, I know what my monthly bill has been, however, I don´t speak Spanish and I need to be firm when I pay this month, no overcharging.

I do follow the content creators you mentioned, so I'm not completely surprised, but I can't imagine how challenging life must be right now if you have things you need to do. Excellent vid. All 100% dead on. I feel all of this lol... After 2 + years living in Manta I realized that EC is only as good as it's people allow it to be. Corruption is so ingrained into the society and institutions it will take a " shock " to the system of great magnitude which may never happen. As a former owner of a local hotel I would like you to do a vid on the effects of the hospitality sector and how these infrastructure and corruption issues are crippling it ...while the City begs people to come and visit etc... keep up the good work bro.
Expats were already under siege for a myriad of issues, including corruption, judicial bribery, violent home invasions, and real estate scams. This lack of organization occurs on all levels.
They let the water out and the dam now doesn't have the proper water level to produce the energy. That sounds like the 3 stooges (Patiño, Lasso, Noboa).
If they are going to do this, the only way to prevent total economic collapse would be to make the same schedule for all areas of Ecuador and stick to it. People can adapt to things as long as they know what they are expected to adapt to IN ADVANCE. The way it's been going, people are just guessing about schedules and the days they'll actually be carried out. Also, they need to develop some mechanism for keeping streetlights on when it's dark. I'm lucky to be alive after a long trip from the airport in which my driver had to drive on bad, curvy mountain roads in dense fog without streetlights.
I live in Ecuador and work on-line. So I built a battery back up supply to keep working. I am able to get 8-10 hours of backup power. Perhaps look in this solution to help.
I wondered if anyone wss doing this. Also wonder if solar panels and batteries are available. Thinking of all the tiny home, van life folks who rely on solar for critical power.

Thank u for this video, it covers so many bases, answers so many questions about the current situation in Ecuador. My gf lives in Cuenca, is constantly frustrated with the power outages there. But she is no digital nomad, only needs power for her modem so she has wi-fi to connect with family and friends on Facebook. As well, of course, checking emails and things like that. I just tell her to hang in there, at some point this will all go away!
I’m trying to build an ecolodge in Loja and we just are getting going in our day and the power gets shut off. This lack of consistent power is tough on progress. It is raining here not sure about the rest of the country. This idea of heavy rains fixing the issue making the hydro electric plants push out power is the best hope we have.

I’m also so sorry that you’ve had so many issues with your motorcycle. First your helmet getting stolen and now some damage to your motorcycle. Regarding the inconsideration, noise and all night partying when you have neighbors only a few feet away, has always been explained here in Mexico as part of the culture but I’m sorry that is just an excuse. Culture has nothing to do with respecting other peoples Privacy and safety. I am praying things improve sooner than later for you.
I can only assume that they’re trying to ration energy in a way that’s more substantial since if they took it away at night they wouldn’t really be saving much and then the situation might extend itself even longer. Now definitely would be a troubling time if you run any business online or need the internet because you’d have to schedule everything to work around the power outages and they do seem to shift from time to time so that would be a hassle. Galapagos is the only place that’s been saved from this situation but it’s more of the “premium” side of Ecuador. In regards to the inconsideration, sometimes it’s just next level. I get wanting to have fun in the midst of hardship since sometimes you just need some fun but it shouldn’t have to come at the cost of other’s peace and it definitely shouldn’t be played off as something cultural. I’ve gotten used to it but I feel that that should be something we as people should know is not ok. You guys did an excellent job explaining the situation so I definitely wanted to make sure everyone who wanted more info would check that video out. In regards to the cultural aspect, I’ve been listening to what everyone’s been saying in regards to the energy situation and definitely no one’s happy (even less in the hot hot coast) but I found a friend who’s living in Galapagos today while I was voting and he told me that the situation over there is nonexistent. We have to wait and see how this develops and hope for the best!

I wanted to mention that the term for what you described regarding obtaining jobs through connections is considered “patronage.” Many times this is without merit. Chicago politics is very well known for this “patronage” system. Other times if its family its called nepotism. When we describe corruption it is when individuals are commiting fraud, illegal acts, bribery, etc. for personal gain.
Absolutely agree that the raid on the Mexican embassy would backfire - that was fast. But about the political opposition not wanting to harm the country, I have my doubts. Politicians don't have boundaries when pushing their own agenda against others. There might also be some foreign influence. Anything is possible. And the Mexican embassy situation only escalated everything because now foreign actors are probably even more willing to interfere in the background. As for the “state of mind” of Ecuadorians, I don't live there, but I guess that’s a fair take: whenever you see people around abusing the system and not get any penalty in return, then there is a huge psychological incentive to do the same, which can result in a big chain reaction. Maybe the whole chaotic situation will bring people to think a bit about it, which as a result will bring the population to ask for more regulation, and especially more *enforcement* of regulations, because a law written on paper that is simply ignored by everyone is a very crappy situation, just as if the regulation didn't exist at all, and worse: giving the sentiment that there is no justice at all in the whole country. Let’s see what happens on the longer term, and in the meantime, just brace yourself, it seems to me that this is far from over.
We in South Africa are experience similar challenges. It is called load shedding. Main problems is the ANC, ruling party been in power for 30 years, is totally corrupt and no maintenance has been done in 30 years. Not only do we have challenges with electricity but water, infrastructure, high unemployment and very high crime. Our beautiful country is crumbling. I am a proud white African and no other continent or country will ever be home for me but Africa, South Africa. Forgot to mention.... That when we experience load shedding then electrical cables are stolen.

I've just arrived in Ecuador, a week ago, Guayaquil and Montanita, for the fourth time. The journey was great, weather is great. Power cuts only a few hours during the night. I think it's a big mistake making people vote, it's obligatory here. Everybody is not politically minded. I'm in montanita, everything is OK. Short on the tourists.
Yes, I'm a utility guy, so I'm astonished at what's happening. There are probably many reasons. We didn't hear about the problems we're seeing now. Planned outages, with a little bit of planning, can mitigate blackouts. We know that the grid is overdependent on hydro, so where's the solar/gas turbine/wind/etc. plan? Also, tech can give you a smart grid, which allows you to shift power to the need to maximize gen capacity. But to your point, there are some cultural issues to deal with. Hire for excellence. Create transparency/accountability. Reward integration/coordination. Etc...
Glad to hear your thoughts as a utility guy! I remember mentioning in a video at the beginning of the year (or end of last) that we were looking into alternatives for power but have heard no updates since then. I’m wondering if this goes hand in hand with the sabotage and the ex-minister just didn’t want to let that plan move forward. The cultural issues will continue to be an anchor that I feel will weigh Ecuador down for an unfortunately long time unless the current president (or a future one) is able to make a substantial change. My concern is that changing a person’s mentality is one of the hardest things to do and with how long I’ve been here I’m very confident in saying that people will cling to the old ways until the very last second if given the chance to.
With a spirit of respect and helpfulness : I lived in a country that years ago and during high temperature periods / hurricane conditions We also many times had limited water pressure, and limited electric power availability. I suggest buying a battery/ usb / Solar chargeable emergency light….or 2 and a large plastic bucket to fill and keep in the shower…. It won’t solve the trouble in Beloved Ecuador infrastructure problems….but these ideas make it much easier for individuals during difficult times. In San Clemente de Sucre, the local vecinos have come together to install storm drains to drain Quito Avenue, Construct their own playground and Library, Atarraya, with over 4000 books, university students who are giving classes in Math, English as second language and Reading for free and they are receiving a scholarship for their efforts. The communities need to do some of their own efforts to make a better community. We are working to make that a reality here.
Like things was not bad enough! But entering the mexican embassy without the ambassadors permission was a huge mistake! And unfortunate the Ecuadorian people is the ones that going to suffer for a long time.

Hey Kathy! Indeed, I was literally on my final phase of editing the video and almost considered adding a voiceover to talk about that but I didn’t want to make the video longer. As for the new state of emergency, I was pretty confused about it too but looked into it and got more info from my dad as well and this one is fundamentally different since it’s an “energy state of emergency” and it also doesn’t come with any restrictions. In other words the reason why the previous state of emergency couldn’t be extended was because that would mean adding more restrictions and that’s what wouldn’t be allowed. The most that’s being done with this state of emergency is that the military is now guarding the power plants so that no bad actors do anything undesirable to the power plants that could worsen the situation. I have lived in Ecuador for 11 years, in the Sierra. The blackouts are a super inconvenience for most of us, however, there are people who are living in war torn countries that would trade places with me in a heartbeat. Why not have the blackouts during the night when the majority aren´t using the electricity?
I remember watching a video from Last Week Tonight about the Israel-Hamas war and that was just absolutely heartbreaking because like you said, their conditions are much worse than what we’re living through right now and I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. As for the logic behind the timing, the only explanation I’ve been able to give as to the timing is that since the energy is so low and we need to make up for what we don’t have and what we’re not getting, it wouldn’t make sense to take away energy at an hour that no one is using it since it wouldn’t save all that much. That’s why they take it away at times when it’s being used more in order to save more. I wish it were being done at night so it wouldn’t be inconvenient but I assume the logic behind the timing is because of what I mentioned.
@@GMAceM How do restaurants, beauty salons, eye care facilities, dentist, veterinarians, large grocery stores (like Super and Mega Maxi) ATMś, etc. operate with no electric power?
I thought the same thing but then after pondering more I thought maybe because the daytime is when the biggest drain of power happens as everyone is trying to use it.
Always glad to help! What makes it more unfortunate is not knowing ahead of time when they’re going to happen. I wish they were scheduled for the whole week but it seems like they post them almost before the week ends and they may be subject to change. For example the other day I had seen that we were going to lose power from 3-6 and then when my brother checked it was from 2-4. It also happened earlier that my brother checked and the outage wasn’t posted yet but when I checked 5-10min later it was there.
I actually talked about this with a friend and we discussed alternatives for power. Solar power definitely sounded way expensive but even discussing alternatives we found that it’s most likely due to environmental factors. In other words, adding more sources of power wouldn’t only be more expensive but could harm the environment.

South Afrika has the same since quite a while, also due to corruption and emplyees (management!) plundering out their own company. Result is all rich people have batteries and generators and the poor sit in the dark even longer, as the batteries drain the net out when it comes online.
I’ve seen things like that happen a lot and it’s always that feeling of the big guys (bosses) sitting back and sipping their coffee while they’re demanding people to work harder than they have to to make up for their greed.

Hey Ace, I think your wrong about the driving here’s why. When I started driving down here I drove like I would in the states and almost was in multiple accidents after I started driving like an Ecuadorian it hasn’t happened since. Driving here is more like a dance. That being said I hate the Ecuadorian parking permit ( leaving the car in the lane with the emergency flashers on while they go shopping ) it drives me nuts. Also that fact that when someone starts a business they never think where will my customers park. That is just crazy to me but hey I’m the one choosing to live here so I really can’t complain. You should try teaching English online if you get a small generator and starlink you won’t be to effected by the power outage’s.
@@rantiksadventure1920 Must be your internet provider. Most internet providers and cell phone towers have their own power and are not effected by the outages. That's why all of the banks, businesses, and supermarkets are still able to operate on generators. I use TVCable and it works fine during the power outages. I have friends that use other providers the same way (can't remember what brands)
I also forgot to add that I come from a Mexican background my family left Mexico in the 60s because of its corruption which has gotten worse is a Norco country I understand what between both countries with the embassy issue but I think that Mexico thinks they're on top of the world and don't like to be disrespected they have a narco attitude

There are websites to check. But it's never recommended to drive at night between cities, especially in the mountains!

In regards to the cultural aspect, I’ve been listening to what everyone’s been saying in regards to the energy situation and definitely no one’s happy (even less in the hot hot coast) but I found a friend who’s living in Galapagos today while I was voting and he told me that the situation over there is nonexistent. We have to wait and see how this develops and hope for the best!

But those are the consequences of Corruption and have to do more with the Government, if the Government doesn't play it's role as a leader and respect it's own law's and institutions then you can't expect People to respect them. Remember (if the head doesn't function properly the body will fail too.
I wanted to mention that the term for what you described regarding obtaining jobs through connections is considered “patronage.” Many times this is without merit. Chicago politics is very well known for this “patronage” system. Other times if its family its called nepotism. When we describe corruption it is when individuals are commiting fraud, illegal acts, bribery, etc. for personal gain.
Absolutely agree that the raid on the Mexican embassy would backfire - that was fast. But about the political opposition not wanting to harm the country, I have my doubts. Politicians don't have boundaries when pushing their own agenda against others. There might also be some foreign influence. Anything is possible. And the Mexican embassy situation only escalated everything because now foreign actors are probably even more willing to interfere in the background.
As for the “state of mind” of Ecuadorians, I don't live there, but I guess that’s a fair take: whenever you see people around abusing the system and not get any penalty in return, then there is a huge psychological incentive to do the same, which can result in a big chain reaction. Maybe the whole chaotic situation will bring people to think a bit about it, which as a result will bring the population to ask for more regulation, and especially more *enforcement* of regulations, because a law written on paper that is simply ignored by everyone is a very crappy situation, just as if the regulation didn't exist at all, and worse: giving the sentiment that there is no justice at all in the whole country. Let’s see what happens on the longer term, and in the meantime, just brace yourself, it seems to me that this is far from over.

Are the blackouts country wide? Or are there parts of Ecuador that are not effected by them? (like more rural areas)?
We in South Africa are experience similar challenges. It is called load shedding. Main problems is the ANC, ruling party been in power for 30 years, is totally corrupt and no maintenance has been done in 30 years. Not only do we have challenges with electricity but water, infrastructure, high unemployment and very high crime. Our beautiful country is crumbling. I am a proud white African and no other continent or country will ever be home for me but Africa, South Africa. Forgot to mention.... That when we experience load shedding then electrical cables are stolen.
There is the fraud. Who will get the 2 damaged turbines for practically nothing? Are they even really damaged?

I've just arrived in Ecuador, a week ago, Guayaquil and Montanita, for the fourth time. The journey was great, weather is great. Power cuts only a few hours during the night. I think it's a big mistake making people vote, it's obligatory here. Everybody is not politically minded. I'm in montanita, everything is OK. Short on the tourists.

Yes, I'm a utility guy, so I'm astonished at what's happening. There are probably many reasons. We didn't hear about the problems we're seeing now. Planned outages, with a little bit of planning, can mitigate blackouts. We know that the grid is overdependent on hydro, so where's the solar/gas turbine/wind/etc. plan? Also, tech can give you a smart grid, which allows you to shift power to the need to maximize gen capacity. But to your point, there are some cultural issues to deal with. Hire for excellence. Create transparency/accountability. Reward integration/coordination. Etc...
Glad to hear your thoughts as a utility guy! I remember mentioning in a video at the beginning of the year (or end of last) that we were looking into alternatives for power but have heard no updates since then. I’m wondering if this goes hand in hand with the sabotage and the ex-minister just didn’t want to let that plan move forward.
The cultural issues will continue to be an anchor that I feel will weigh Ecuador down for an unfortunately long time unless the current president (or a future one) is able to make a substantial change. My concern is that changing a person’s mentality is one of the hardest things to do and with how long I’ve been here I’m very confident in saying that people will cling to the old ways until the very last second if given the chance to.

We also many times had limited water pressure, and limited electric power availability.
I suggest buying a battery/ usb / Solar chargeable emergency light….or 2
and a large plastic bucket to fill and keep in the shower….
It won’t solve the trouble in Beloved Ecuador infrastructure problems….but these ideas make it much easier for individuals during difficult times.

In San Clemente de Sucre, the local vecinos have come together to install storm drains to drain Quito Avenue, Construct their own playground and Library, Atarraya, with over 4000 books, university students who are giving classes in Math, English as second language and Reading for free and they are receiving a scholarship for their efforts. The communities need to do some of their own efforts to make a better community. We are working to make that a reality here.
Like things was not bad enough! But entering the mexican embassy without the ambassadors permission was a huge mistake! And unfortunate the Ecuadorian people is the ones that going to suffer for a long time.

Indeed, I was literally on my final phase of editing the video and almost considered adding a voiceover to talk about that but I didn’t want to make the video longer.
As for the new state of emergency, I was pretty confused about it too but looked into it and got more info from my dad as well and this one is fundamentally different since it’s an “energy state of emergency” and it also doesn’t come with any restrictions. In other words the reason why the previous state of emergency couldn’t be extended was because that would mean adding more restrictions and that’s what wouldn’t be allowed.
The most that’s being done with this state of emergency is that the military is now guarding the power plants so that no bad actors do anything undesirable to the power plants that could worsen the situation.

I have lived in Ecuador for 11 years, in the Sierra. The blackouts are a super inconvenience for most of us, however, there are people who are living in war torn countries that would trade places with me in a heartbeat. Why not have the blackouts during the night when the majority aren´t using the electricity?
I remember watching a video from Last Week Tonight about the Israel-Hamas war and that was just absolutely heartbreaking because like you said, their conditions are much worse than what we’re living through right now and I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.
As for the logic behind the timing, the only explanation I’ve been able to give as to the timing is that since the energy is so low and we need to make up for what we don’t have and what we’re not getting, it wouldn’t make sense to take away energy at an hour that no one is using it since it wouldn’t save all that much. That’s why they take it away at times when it’s being used more in order to save more. I wish it were being done at night so it wouldn’t be inconvenient but I assume the logic behind the timing is because of what I mentioned.

What makes it more unfortunate is not knowing ahead of time when they’re going to happen. I wish they were scheduled for the whole week but it seems like they post them almost before the week ends and they may be subject to change. For example the other day I had seen that we were going to lose power from 3-6 and then when my brother checked it was from 2-4. It also happened earlier that my brother checked and the outage wasn’t posted yet but when I checked 5-10min later it was there.

I actually talked about this with a friend and we discussed alternatives for power. Solar power definitely sounded way expensive but even discussing alternatives we found that it’s most likely due to environmental factors. In other words, adding more sources of power wouldn’t only be more expensive but could harm the environment.

South Afrika has the same since quite a while, also due to corruption and emplyees (management!) plundering out their own company. Result is all rich people have batteries and generators and the poor sit in the dark even longer, as the batteries drain the net out when it comes online.
I’ve seen things like that happen a lot and it’s always that feeling of the big guys (bosses) sitting back and sipping their coffee while they’re demanding people to work harder than they have to to make up for their greed.

Hey Ace, I think your wrong about the driving here’s why. When I started driving down here I drove like I would in the states and almost was in multiple accidents after I started driving like an Ecuadorian it hasn’t happened since. Driving here is more like a dance. That being said I hate the Ecuadorian parking permit ( leaving the car in the lane with the emergency flashers on while they go shopping ) it drives me nuts. Also that fact that when someone starts a business they never think where will my customers park. That is just crazy to me but hey I’m the one choosing to live here so I really can’t complain. You should try teaching English online if you get a small generator and starlink you won’t be to effected by the power outage’s.
You don't need Starlink. The internet works fine during the power outages. All you need is power for your modem and router
In the most recent power outage we connected the router to the generator and it would not work at all.
@@rantiksadventure1920 Must be your internet provider. Most internet providers and cell phone towers have their own power and are not effected by the outages. That's why all of the banks, businesses, and supermarkets are still able to operate on generators. I use TVCable and it works fine during the power outages. I have friends that use other providers the same way (can't remember what brands)

I also forgot to add that I come from a Mexican background my family left Mexico in the 60s because of its corruption which has gotten worse is a Norco country I understand what between both countries with the embassy issue but I think that Mexico thinks they're on top of the world and don't like to be disrespected they have a narco attitude

These people are smart enough to be what is considered civil relative to other countries but there are strong cultural values that hold them down and anyone who tries to introduce new values and methods are ignored or just flat out ridiculed unless you can prove it brings wealth, which is the wrong mentality to have.
