A handful of straw, a scoop of ash or lime, no smell, future compost (2+ yrs. aging in a dedicated compost pile). I wrote and illustrated a whole “abc’s of medieval times” type book when I was in 3rd or 4th grade and all I remember from it is drawing a guy standing in poop holding a ring he found while cleaning out a cesspit😂😂 I still remember my teacher asking to keep it as an example but it was my peak project so I said no, I still regret that. No idea where it is or what I’d do with it now😂

I suppose we all feel grateful we live in the days that we do with modern toilet facilities and so forth. But, had you been born 600 years ago, things wouldn't be quite as bad as you think. You would have been born into those days and facilities, and you'd have grown up with them got used to them and thought nothing of it.

Here in the States, public urination and defecation was decriminalized.
      It's horrible.
Now homeless and others "do their business" everywhere and anywhere.
I am suspicious as to why our Health Dept are not screaming their heads off about it.
It isn't just about dignity, it's about healthy, clean streets and parks.
Now there is a sanitation crew to clean the streets and sidewalks - business owners who find their storefront befouled must clean up the mess themselves.
Policymakers in Sacramento, California think prosecuting the crime was contributing to overfull jails.
      😡

    Love these videos.
We can certainly laugh a little at the plight of our Medieval ancestors, but when we witness what is happening with the sewage in the United Kingdom, sometimes it seems as if progress is going backwards.
It seems that it has become cheaper for water companies to flush raw sewage into rivers and the sea than investing in upgrades and maintenance, leaning on a law that allowed them to do so under specific circumstances - too much rainfall - and then completely breaking that law by doing it all the time.
Goodness knows what would happen if the water supply to any town or city was interrupted for more than a week.
Suddenly the problems that Medieval people experienced would come back to haunt us many hundreds of years later.
Anyone who has unblocked the sewage pipes in their own homes, saving the £100 it costs to call someone out, will be all too aware of how bad it could get.
A set of drainage rods and a cast iron constitution can usually get the job done and the jobbies sent on their way - assuming the water supply is working...
If it wasn't, everyone's toilets would instantly become akin to festival toilets until they became unusable and buckets were used ... and then how to dispose of it? Maybe with a spade and digging a hole in the ground.
And then 1 week becomes 2 weeks and ... third world problems.
"I'll go to the woods down the road"
"Hmm. Everyone else has thought of that already."
    Squelch squelch squelch...

I'd like to inform you about a lesser known event in German history: The Erfurt Latrine Fall in 1184, when Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI. held a royal diet at the Petersburg Citadel in Erfurt. Under the weight of the attendants, the wooden floor broke, crashed through the ground floor and into the latrine pit. About sixty high noblemen and clerics drowned in the excrements.

In some instances they excavate the cesspit and they can find the parasite eggs in the poo/soil by checking under the microscope. The parasite is long dead but the eggs are really tough and can be identified as to what species and everything, even after hundreds of years in the right preservation conditions. It's amazing and fascinating and I have way too much information on the subject lol.
