    A lot of my life was spent without inside plumbing.
    We had a two hole toilet which was not for using by two people at a time .
    The toilet was out in the pasture where we raised hogs and had a four foot hole under it. We used catalogs and sometimes phone books when family brought old phone books down.
    We saved our wood ashes that we generated in the winter. We would dump a scoop of ash after we used the toilet to keep the insects out.
    We could get years out of a toilet without using a new hole.
    The doors of the toilet opened inward so in the summer you could sit in the hot box with the door open and if someone was coming you could kick the door closed.
    In the winter the snow would blow through the crack. I would make a taper and light it to warm the seat and melt the snow. Wasps and spiders were a problem in the summer.
    There was a lantern hook inside for night visits. We had a thunder mug but the only time it was used was if you were physically not able to walk to the toilet.
    My grandpa had a candle that he would light at night.
    I rarely used a light to get to the toilet but it was nice to burn a taper to check out the hole for spiders when you got there .
    In my area the church used the diamond on a door for men and the crescent moon for women.
    Our toilets had solid doors...

      Probably on the older side, but even then it took longer to get indoor toilets if you lived out in the sticks. My mom was born in a house without indoor plumbing and didn't move into one until she was a teenager.

    I use the toilet more often than most people, so I am VERY thankful for its invention! I am very impressed with people who use Nature’s Head toilets and others like it. (Lots of tiny house owners use them.) They cut down on so much water waste!

    • @leapintothewild
      @leapintothewild 2 года назад +2

      Yes! There are great compostable and cartridge toilets that have carried over to the tiny house movement from the RV and travel trailer industry. I thought the dry toilet shown here would make a great improvement over the traditional outhouses along many hiking trails -- all they'd have to do is add a bucket of sand or soil next to the hole so you could add a layer and cut down on the stink... :-)

      water never gets used up. the total amount of water in the world is the same as its
      always been. water changes form, then changes back, gets re-directed, but you
      only use water, you never really use it up. some areas have less, some have more
      but the Earth never lacked for water.

    • @Multiroester
      @Multiroester Год назад

      @@danielkokal8819 Yes.
      But what happens is the POLLUTION of water.
      Like in CHina where several lakes are chemical polluted.
      Maybe the total amount of water stays the same. but the amount of clean water shrinks down.

    As a biologist and researcher, I cannot appreciate the invention of sanitation systems enough. Numerous people died due to the lack of sewage systems (and there have been roughly 7 major cholera worldwide outbreaks in the last 200 years). Although you might think that cholera infections are not as prevalent anymore it is estimated that there are annually still 1.3 million to 4.0 million cases of cholera, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide (would really love to make a video about that)! I really hope that we could raise more awareness for this issue. Feel free to ask me anything about this topic or stem cells (since I am conducting research in this field)!

      Due to RV parks illegally dumping waste into the river in Cherokee, NC and Bryson city's ( town beside) sewage company broke down temp and dumped into same river.... They pisted NO warnings and my dog has permanent fur loss from a bacterial infection.... A woman became blind in one eye from it and many other infections reported. And this is a MAJOR tourist spot for swimming, rafting and fly fishing.
      This happened about 7 years ago.
      My questions got answered why I never saw cherokees or other locals using the river. I got warned by an Indian too late... Weeks after dog infected. I had just moved to the area.
      The remainder of year I lived there I warned every tourist and parents acted fast to get their kids out etc.

    In the 1940s my grandparents lived in a colliery house. The toilet was an earth closet across the street from the house. There was a wooden hole where you did your toileting. The poo fell into a cupboard underneath and ashes from the fire were thrown over the fragrant poo. A man came from the council to shovel them out every few weeks, which was not a pleasant job. He was paid a few more pence than the bin men. When I stayed at my grandparents if I wanted to go to the toilet through the night I was expected to use a chamber pot from under the bed. My grandmother put a paraffin lamp in the outside toilet as they were freezing. No toilet rolls in those days, my Grandmother cut up newspapers and hung them on a nail on the toilet door. The paper squares were a bit hard and hard to use for a child. My Grandparents' colliery house was a two-up, two-down house and there were eight in the family. My grandmother had to have the tin bath ready for my grandfather and my uncles when they came home from the colliery. Then she put their dinner on the table. She would then clean the pit clothes and polish their boots. It was hard for the miner's wives in those days. God Bless Her

    One time when I was young, I was in an Asian airport and I really need to do a no. 2. But when I went in, all the proper toilet stalls were occupied and there was a vacant *"floor toilet"* left. So there I did no. 2. whilst trying to squat.
    After that, I boarded the plane and sat in my seat, but I smelled something really bad... I found a small stain on the bottom of my shirt. 😬😭

      Squatting toilets are pretty common in Asian countries. I've been to Japan a few times, and while they mostly have advanced western toilets (often with features like heated seats and built-in bidets), there are still some squatting toilets for those who are used to using them. On top of that, you might sometimes see signs in public restrooms showing how to properly use a western toilet, and while they tend to look hilarious with images of all the wrong ways to do it, they're there for a reason.

    The flush lavatory is what ultimately led Liverpool, London and other major cities in Britain to build a modern sewage system- which is still in place. It started In Liverpool and then London got on the bandwagon after the 1858 Great Stink. The problem was the toilets were causing the cesspits to overflow, allowing sewage to seep into the water supply- the Thames in London’s case.
    Another fun fact was that, during this time a scientist in London (I forget his name) used a study of an area dealing with a cholera outbreak to prove that it was a waterborne disease- disproving the “miasma theory” that had prevailed for centuries. It was one of the first instances of the use of scientific research disproving a commonly held belief.

      I wouldn't say it's a derogatory term. I mean, people don't get charged for "sex work." The legal term is prostitution. When an individual is being charged for the services rendered by these sex workers, the charge is called solicitation of prostitution.
      I don't use that term in a malicious way. If I had meant any true animosity, i would have referred to them as whores, which I find to be an extremely derogatory term, and personally, never use it in reference to the ladies (or gentlemen) of the night. In reality, I've no ill will towards those individuals. It's not an envious job, and they often get just as much abuse, if not more, from people outside of their job, as from their clients. Even though their profession is one of the oldest in human history, and as much as most people don't want to admit, it was at times, a necessary profession. And one that contributed a lot to the building of young nations and settlements. There are a number of wars that would have been lost, or won, because of their work. They raised morale, even if some were also spreading STIs while doing so. They have always been a part of human culture, and they always will be. I see no point in thinking any less of them as people because of how they earn money. I'm aware that they arent all dirty junkies, who do quick tricks for $5-$20. There are plenty of average middle class individuals, who you would never guess their work. And there are those extremely high end companions, that as so worth their exorbitant fees.
      I made a simple joke. Doesn't mean I have an ill will towards people of that profession. But some people may not understand, believe, or accept that. And that's okay. I cant change them, nor do I care to. I only wanted to make it clear that if anything, I respect those who work in that field, not look down on them.

    • @kari7403
      @kari7403 5 лет назад +4

      @Colleen I love how you can accuse another of being, "uneducated," and yet, you can't even build a simple, intelligible sentence.
      Still, I think I understand what you are getting at. And all I can say is that, that's a lot of assumptions that likely stem from anger, and NOT from any actual evidence, or argument of any substance. Plus, your assumptions are in fact, all incorrect.
      I know a few people who work, or have worked, in that particular field. 2 of them are very dear to me. So next time your panties get too twisted, maybe try digging them out, and finding out the actual cause, before you go spouting off nonsense and looking the fool because of it.

    Growing up in rural Montana my paternal grandfather, maternal grandmother and uncle all had outhouses of different sorts. Grandfathers was a small space in a shed complete with sears catalog on a wire. Grandmothers was further from the house, thus there was a 5 pound coffee can that everyone did #1 in the cold snowy winters. 32 you braved the cold and walked about 1/3 of a block to the outhouse. Uncles was on a hill behind the two room house. All had wooden seating with a hole. As a small child I was always afraid of falling in. My uncle finally put in a new bathroom, Mamie Eisenhower pink, in 1961. They were so proud of it when we came to visit.
    All outhouses were stinky especially in the summer and there were multiples of flies. Think National park campground bathrooms. No flushing just gravity and once a year or so it was cleaned out. Not that bad really, just the way it was.
