My partner and i were together for almost 30 years when cancer took hi 3:393:41 m from me over 18 years ago. This was "our song," but he didn't really know that. They played it over and over again in the gay bar where we met all those years ago; it was on the charts at that point. But he was a classical musician and I thought that he might look down on a top 40 pop song. But I was wrong. Turns out that he loves the song too and was very very much aware that it was playing on that fateful night. As a published poet, I wrote this song about the entire experience sometime after his passing. The Night We Met The varied scents of that leatherette bar -- Marlboros, lager, Halston Z-14 -- live for me still, as does that plaintive song to which I feigned indifference all night long, lest you’d dismiss me as a Philistine, trained, as you were, at Le Conservatoire. Twenty years later in a London pub, we nursed our Pimms Cups, and you held my hand. Suddenly that old song began to play. I blushed. My eyes filled, and I turned away. Then you, who played Bach on a Steinway grand , smiled and told me, no mockery or snub, -- “There’s that song! You can’t possibly forget -- They played it several times the night we met.”
