I am a prelicensed therapist. I had plenty of ptsd before this experience but now I have more. Don’t worry I’m in therapy and have support. But the second I can be on my own, I will be. I specialize in neurodiversity affirming care and I’m learning that no practice is equipped to support me with that so I just have to accept this period of my life for what it is. 😬

You got this! And, as much as you can be a pioneer for the future, I also hope there are more spaces to support the work you do. Best wishes!

I know it's been a while since this comment, but I wanted to comment in solidarity and maybe even ask how things are going now??

Ethically, on burn out.. we are to step back from counseling and seek counsel from other professionals. Model what you are walking in. Self-care is so important. You have to care about you to be there for others. If you are in a Supervision situation that are hectic and you don't feel "safe" to share with him/her it is okay to seek other Suoervision and the board will be okay with it. They know and understand things don't always work out the first time. Seek out new supervision. Blessings to you whomever brought up the question. I ended up changing Supervision within about two months of starting. Changing was the best decision I made. The sooner the better, to not cause harm to clients you may have to transition away from. I had one go with me and she's still with me. Being brave is necessary!

i agree, however, the "ethical" choice you're modeling is kind of a privilege. not everyone is allowed to just stop working.

Love this! One of my favorite videos I’ve watched of yours and I hope you’ll do more!
It was nice to hear about effectiveness as baby therapists. I wonder if you would do a video about choosing a pay scale as a new pp therapist? I’ve found that it can sometimes feel like I’m “not allowed” to charge as much or more than ppl with more experience, but if I followed that my practice would just not be sustainable with what it costs to live here as a younger adult who is trying to survive in this economy. I have no desire to overcharge anyone and really want therapy to be affordable (in fact this is an area I could see myself being an activist in in the future). I do want to be able to sustainably be a therapist for many years to come. That is my motivation to charge what is reasonable for me to live in area. Anyhow, sorry for the rant. It’s just been a bit stressful. I’ve definitely lowered my prices some because I felt like I was being “corrected” by another seasoned therapist for charging a higher rate than her for a specialty method we both offer that is a longer service. I basically prorated this service based on my normal cost and she just charges the same amount.

I'm getting a bit ahead of myself since I'm not even an intern yet, but I know burnout is an expected issue for counselors and their clients. I have one question. Suppose someone does not have the resources to take a break. What advice would you give them? What good resources are out there on burnout recovery?

It was so nice to be part of that train ride and your visit to that cute little California community. Maybe travel videos are your next calling?!❤ I totally understand the importance of dispelling the myth about - the longer in the field the more effective you are. However I think that's been overemphasized. I understand for new grads that's probably reassuring. But I can say for sure that experience allows you to get comfortable with different scenarios and client reactions which helps stay grounded when doing tough work. I also think that this emphasis can lead to ageism which we've got a ton of in society. On a totally different note you are probably going to get questions about your hair products❤

You should have stopped at Orange on the way back from San Juan. Downtown Orange is much cuter and Chapman University has a little art museum. 🙂

Orange is absolutely gorgeous! I've visited a dear friend there twice now and I've spent hours digging into the thrift stores downtown. I have a beloved little plant in a terrarium that I bought at that cute plant shop. I can't remember the name but it's right in that central roundabout. Agreed that Orange is a must for anyone looking for cute stops along the Surfliner route :)

I used dry shampoo at the root and "not your mother's" sea salt spray at the bottom. It's my trick to try to make my not clean hair maybe kinda sorta look ok ;)
