Charlie Moon & Robert Jackson who were famous pocket hunters in Galice around 1900 used to prospect by working on ditch crews. They made several huge strikes this way. I've done well dredging in flooded ditch remnants in the winters just by looking for quartz scattered along the downside ditch banks.

It's all about pressure to run the monitors at the bottom of the hill. They don't just let water run down the hill. They use those pipes from the top where the ditch is and start large and then they get smaller as they go down the hill building emence pressure. Enough to cut a man in half with the water leaving the monitor. Obviously the large pipes were taken and the small still remain. Those smaller pipes would go to each monitor which would wash the hillside away. The slurry would then be directed to sluice boxes to trap the gold.

I like your theories, but if it was true, you’d be able to stick your shovel in the dirt and recover gold from anywhere I don’t think anyone was moving that much ground unless it was worth it
