    You guys make it look so easy .had limited success but find I'm either too little tension and all pins are springy or I'm too much and when I do move a binding one it jumps too violently .it takes a lot more of a particular touch than Pete realise from just watching .Great videos BTW

    Thanks for the kind review 😊 One of the motivations for the minimum set was that people keep buying trash of Amazon for not a lot less than what the minimum set costs. And with those picks, many people have initial successes on really cheap stuff but quickly run against a wall for better locks/profiles. I hope that people will realize that buying low quality means buying twice and instead start spending their money on quality instead of quantity.

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  2 года назад

      I agree. Some picks are just so much more durable. Always buy quality where you can

    • @decoderoh
      @decoderoh 2 года назад

      @@LockNoob Yea, durability, flexibility and dimensions are the worst problems imho. My very first pickset was the MPXS-20 which has really tall-growing shafts. That caused me a lot of trouble in very narrow keyways. But since I was a beginner, I thought that would be "normal". Then I switched to a Southord C-2010 (Slimline). Their dimensions were really good, but the picks really bent a lot, so I thought I was using too much force. This was all before Multipick Elite Picks even existed, so I ended up with Southord Max (Black Handles) which had neither of these problems and my performance on tournaments was significantly better with that. I bet a ton of people are having similar experiences with their cheap set, since they don't know what to look for.

    Great review! Thank you.
    Most of us are familiar with the high quality of multipick(and high value).
    I really like that both these sets have multiple tensioners to choose from, so many sets only include one wiper and don't consider the importance of having the right tensioner.
    Not my choice of picks for an EDC in the minimum set, but that's just my personal preferences.
    I LOVE the case for the beginner set. Lots of space for expansion, and the second row of slots is great for a duplicate set in a different thickness. This is important as beginners hone their skills and develop preferences for more specific picks.
    I don't consider myself a "beginner" anymore, buy far from being advanced yet, and have my own preferences that differ from their choices.
    I've noticed, more and more, your videos seem to be great for experienced pickers, and less comprehendable for a true beginner.
    I like them.
    but if I was just starting, I think I would be a bit confused by some comments and phrases that I now take for granted.

    I think the beginner set is pretty good. If pressed, I'd say to add a couple more rakes, as beginners are going to have more success raking as opposed to spp.. having some successful opens in the beginning is important to growing a person's interest in the hobby IMO. I think the minimum is pretty much spot on, although I'd exchange the double peak for a worm rake or Bogota. Great thorough review as always Ash, much appreciated! 👍👍

  • @FriedPi-mc5yt

    In my opinion, the minimum set is a bit too minimum. It would have been nice to see a worm rake in the set since the double peak might be too tall for some locks. A couple more tension tools would have been nice. My bare minimum for tension tools would be the 6 turners like the ones Christina Palmer suggests or maybe the Longhorn tension tools from Southern Specialties that are 3 different thickness BOK turners that have TOK turners on the opposite ends.
    The Beginner set would do well with a few more rakes as well. I’ve pretty much decided that a basic beginner set should consist of about 6-8 picks with an equal number of hooks and rakes with a good selection of TOK and BOK turning tools. A beginner set should really have a solid selection of turning tools, not just a couple of BOK turners and one or two TOK turners. If a person is getting into lock picking. Not being able to properly tension a core can be really frustrating. Having a couple BOK turners does nothing for someone if they need a TOK turner. That first success is crucial to getting someone really interested in picking as a hobby. I’ve gotten multiple people interested in lock picking by showing them how to pick and then giving them a good basic pick set along with a Masterlock #1 or #3. I usually buy them a basic set and add a couple extra picks and tension tools to fill out the set if it’s needed.

    Minimum kits can very based on use case and preference; in the case of law enforcement you prefer quick entry and bypass things over picking but if you need to pick, raking is king, as SPP takes more time, skill, and practice to be proficient at. While I have larger kits of rakes and hooks for both locksport at home and a backpack of gear for the field my go-to easy carry is: a city rake, snake rake, bogota, worm, and standard hook from Sparrows, a field stripped set of tension tools from Sparrows including their 5 TOK and their 3 piece s-type BOK, as well as a Peterson knife and decoder (I prefer the decoder from Sparrows but it is just too big for compact carry) - the picks all have handles as I’m not a fan of plain pick metal and all fit in an old Southard button front pick case. I also carry a Sparrows Molle Jim; combined these will do well with about 85% of your needs as in the real world, especially the US, people just seem oblivious to the security venerabilities of most locks.

    The minimum set seems like a great value. I'd say that a beginner who bought a cheap set off Amazon and decided that picking suited them could do worse than choose this for a starter set of quality picks that will last them a long, long time. The beginner set is also a great value for picks that are off the highest quality.

    Adding to a minimum set stops it from being a minimum. 😉
    The only decent pick in my toolkit which was broken (by someone else) was a Sparrow's Bogotá. To be fair, I used it a lot as a beginner. So that would be the one to add to the beginner set. Thanks for the review, Ash. 🙂👍

  • @hoggif

    Minimun would do 99% of my use, if it had a tripple peak instead of double peak (i rarely rake though) and if it had usual op of the keyway tensioners. I'd also like something like a peterson gem thart is one of long time favourites.
    Single peak insted of typical is diamond is an interesting choise. I could like that perhaps, for zipping etc. Dismond is not usually something I like, I'm more into hooks.
    Elite beginner case is very good (in other cases similar to it in other multipick sets). I don't like cases like mininum (southord has similar).
    I like multipick picks. Some sets are like Southord but with a better finnish. So far they are only picks that have NOT required any rounding. If they had a profilie similar to peterson gem, I could áll multipickss (and probably would).

    I have a question about locks, for example for our front door which doesn't have a handle at the outside, after you have picked the pins and turned it, it's not like a padlock which immediately springs open, you would still have to rotate the lock 1 or 2 whole times to let the locking bolt unlock the door. Wouldn't it just fall back into a lock when it reaches the starting point again? Do you have to pick it twice then?
    Can the driver pins fall if I do a 180 degree turn?
    edit: I would probably have to try and stop the pins from falling while turning with the tension wrench, I guess. But I'm not sure if this lock would have trap pins either so I better not risk it

    Another great review, well done Ash. I'd love to see a video about finishing your picks. You quite often mention that picks need or don't need to be finished. I primarily use Peterson picks and have never done anything to them. Is it mostly to do with sharp edges that may cut your fingers? Also, what do you do with all these sets you're getting for reviews? Lastly, I was thinking the same thing about adding the Palma tension tools. I may have to make another purchase from MultiPick.

    I think a minimum set should really have a short,medium,standard and reach hook, a city rake, a smooth wave rake, and 3 Z-tensioners in the 3 standard sizes where one end is tapered top of keyway and other end is bottom of keyway. All picks in 20thou instead of 26thou.

    • @decoderoh
      @decoderoh 2 года назад

      That's already too much in terms of price for the minimum set. I was considering more picks, but if the price is too high, people will still go for the cheap alternatives.

    40 dollars US is a bit pricey for 3 picks and 3 tension tools. could just be inflation and a sign of the times i guess.

    I find it a little concerning. I have just started lockpicking. I have always been interested but one of my other hobbies (military rations) took me to Sidenoob which led me here. I have had a little very limited success with Single Pin Picking but I have never had success raking. Everyone says that for simple locks it should be the easiest option but never have I raked successfully.

    I wouldn't use multipick on apsolute beginners because they will bend and break them we all did when we were learning i would say this kit for people that NO all the basics and have a sort of feel for it then yes give them this set .. But when your learning to pick start with the cheap ones dosnt matter if you turn it into a twisty because multipick are exspensive BUT worth every cent but NOT for apsolute beginners because they will look like a packet of twisty chips by the end of the day
