Sewing with Sterling Silver: Making a Tooled Leather Knife Sheath

- This subscriber-supplied decorative knife gave me the perfect chance to hone a skill that I've been wanting to try: Sewing leather with sterling silver wire! Silver wire is used a lot in jewelry making (though not so much in leather craft), so it's pretty easy to source and not too expensive. I may have to try this technique on a fancy holster or bag at some point.
Stamps I used in this video:
Tandy Rope Basket Weave Brass Stamp
Craftool Pro D2197
Craftool S931
Barry King Pebble Steep Angle beveler
btw, the laser I'm using in this video is the Creality Falcon 2 Pro 60W. If interested, below is a link to save my viewers some $ on purchasing one (use code"FNPALL10"). Full disclosure: my channel makes a (very) small commission on this.

Nice work on the stitching, it really makes a difference in the final product! I have never thought of stitching with a metal thread, thanks for showing this!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Your skill deserves to be broadcasting all over YT.
I know, right? Lol. Thanks for watching!
You have no idea how good it really looks 👀 in person. I just had in hand and MAN! WOW it’s amazing! 🤩
Mr Road Agent Leather, true craftsman and artist!
kills me how flawless and beautiful your work is, and how easy and effortless you make it look. No F-Bombs, no throwing things. Just a classy master of his craft.
I cut all that stuff out of the video. Thanks for watching!
I enjoy your channel more and more with every video you post!
Happy to hear that!
Very Nice ! 👍 I love the use of the silver wire, Beautiful accent and functional addition to this peace. This is sheath is worthy for such a knife, or this knife is worthy of such a BEAUTIFUL SHEATH. It looks like though we’re using one of the new brass stamps from one of the National leather companies (didn’t want to get into trouble for saying the name🤩). I have that same stamp and really like the crispness and detail these stamps produce. Can’t end this with out noticing the green gloves! Very fashionable 👍😊😁 Thank You for sharing your talents.😎
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! Yes, the brass basketweave stamp is from Tandy Leather. And yes . . . the green gloves are something new Harbor Freight started selling (love that place).
First time I have seen stitching/lacing with silver wire! Outstandiing, innovative and so appropriate for that knife.Great video and artistry.
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Another incredibly masterful leather creation! That knife would come in handy if attacked by an Alaskan Brown bear. 😁 BTW….the background flute music is my favorite….I whistle it now when I’m working in my shop. My wife even recognizes it. 😄
lol. Thanks for watching again!
I'm running out of adjectives for your beautiful work. Another classy project. I would have had multiple band aids on my fingers from cuts by the silver thread.
Thanks for leaving a comment. The wire wasn't necessarily difficult to work with . . . just very tedious. Don't expect to go as fast as stitching with normal thread!
Beautiful! That sheath is PERFECT for that blade. I sure enjoy watching your creative process!!
Thank you very much!
That was slick with the silver wire!
Thank you for watching!
Must have patience with the silver wire! 👍
Not hard; just very tedious. Thanks for subscribing!
Very good. Безупречная работа. Лайк

love the silver!

Excellent design and nice work! Matches the knife tastefully.
Thanks! Yeah, I thought the silver stitching would compliment the silver accents on the handle.
Lovely video. Here is some information about the engravings on the knife. One side with the horse rider on it, it highlights the time when Fatih Sultan Mehmet who is the conquerer of Constantinapolis in 1453 and change its name to İstanbul. The other side is, ancestors of Turks used to be nomads. They wander around in middle east with their herds and their belongings. Turks used to be nomads between 1000-1500 A.D. Btw thats a really good knife ❤
Thanks Özer for explaining it for @RoadAgentLeather.
Ah! I knew the etchings had to represent something historical. Thanks so much for watching and leaving this comment.
Awesome workmanship
Thanks 👍
I believe we have a case of the sheath costing more than the knife. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Yeah, but you have to know the story behind this knife. To me it’s priceless because of the story behind it. That’s why it has the sheath that it has.
@@Psychobilly I totally get it! It wasn't a criticism, more of a humorous observation. Like having a $5K car with $10K's worth of stereo in it.
Beautiful work as always
Thank you so much 😀
A beautiful sheath for a nice looking blade.

Beautiful work! So happy to hear the flute music again; I think it goes so well with your craftsmanship. I especially love the way you did the arrows with the basket stamp, as well as the silver wire accent. Your work is top notch!

Another beautiful work of art👍😊.
Thank you so much 😀
Awesome work as usual.

another great job, amazing how you come up with these ideas
Thank you very much! And thanks for subscribing!
That is awesome! I would have never thought to try using wire in place of thread… I may have to add that to my arsenal.
Glad it was helpful! And THANKS for subscribing!
Muy bueno el trabajo👍👍👍

Cool knife

Magnificent! I finally got that Tandy stationary skiver. It works fantastic.
The "high-tech" skiver? That's one of my oldest tools. Works great.
Yes sir, that thing is just amazing.
Klasse super von dir ✨️💯👍👍

I love the idea of stitching with silver wire. Is there a problem with the wire tarnishing after a while?
Beautiful work, by the way. 👍🏻
Not sure. I presume eventually? Silver does tarnish so may have to buff the edges from time to time. Thanks for watching!
Can you create a video around your laser? Primarily the designing and set-up.
I just recently made a video showing how I create laser files from sketches / drawings

Knife sheaths are so fun to make. It's such a simple thing, but there's no end to the creative things you can do with them. Stitching with wire must have been a super tedious process, but the end result was totally worth it. That looks amazing. One question... what are those rivets you put in the corners called? I've never seen a tubular rivet with a burr before.
They're regular tubular rivets. They're just a tad short for making a proper "splash" on this piece. In such cases, I add a small washer and flair out the end with an old center punch I ground to a cone.
@@RoadAgentLeather Cool idea. I'm sure it's plenty strong. And it looks good.

Beginner here. Beautiful build and very inspirational. Does anyone know what that soapy solution was in the begging when he put it on both sides of the sheath and then put it in the plastic bag? I've just been using plain water to case the leather.
It's glycerin saddle soap. It helps make better stamp impressions and slows down the drying process some. Not a necessary thing and plain water will do . . . just something I do I guess. Thanks for subscribing!
Beautiful work as always. May I ask where you got those brass jaw plyer's and wuta irons?
I bought those from Micro-Mark. You can also buy them from Amazon. Look up "parallel pliers brass"
Ooo that’s snazzy. My first thought about the wire thread was that it might bite through the leather over time, is that something you’re worried about?
No. This is relatively thick veg-tan leather; it's tough stuff. More importantly, there shouldn't be any "movement" in this seam that would allow the wire to grind into the leather (i.e., think the flap of a satchel or the folding and unfolding of a wallet).
just amazing! how long did all that stitching take you?
A few hours over the course of a couple of days. Thanks for subscribing!
👍✋️🇧🇾
i am wondering if The Ballad Of A Small Man - by Marty Robbins (Midjourney AI v5 Video ranger belt all has different videos too 'In the middle, i would handcuff large size i would guess
What’s the advantage to using saddle soap in the casing process over just using the spray bottle then tool?
It's an old technique I learned: The saddle soap helps lubricate the leather fibers. This allows a swivel knife glide through the leather easier and stamps make better impressions. It also slows down the leather drying.
That sheath is beautiful ! What thickness of leather did you use for that sheath ? I want to make a sheath but I can't buy leather locally so I'm not sure what thickness or type of leather to order . Thank you !
This was 9-oz veg-tan. Same stuff I use for holsters.
Very nice , what supply do you recommend for the silver. Thanks
I bought mine from a seller on eBay. But you can get it from Amazon.
May I ask what is the purpose to put the wet leather in the bag and what is the soap for ? I‘m doing also in leather but this process is new for me. Thanks in advance, greetings from Vienna \ Austria 🤝
It's a process called "casing". It's exclusively for preparing veg-tan leather for tooling. The saddle soap helps lubricate the leather fibers. This allows a swivel knife glide through the leather easier and stamps make better impressions. It also slows down the leather drying.

Do you have a shop page on Etsy, Ebay or a website? I had a custom blade made overseas and would like a custom scabbard made for it.
I have an Etsy store I occasionally list items on. If you want to get in touch with me directly, my email is on my channel's homepage. Thanks for subscribing!
Good afternoon, please tell me what glue do you use? And it would also be cool to dedicate one video about all the chemistry you use, thank you in advance.
I use either Eco Weld water based contact cement or Aquilim315
@@RoadAgentLeather Can I have a link to it, please? Thank you
El cuchillo es bonito, pero la funda le gana
Thank you. And thanks extra for subscribing!
What manufacturer is the screwdriver and the pliers thank you
They're brass-lined parallel from micro mark. Are you referring to the black pin-vice? That's from amazon--not sure who makes it.
How long do you case your leather in the ziplock before tooling?
couple of hours usually. Thanks for subscribing!
How tf do you do all of that stamping my hands get tired just watching you do it
Lol. Thanks! This is actually not much tooling compared to other projects I've made.
is the leather dry when you're punching it?
It's damp... not wet; not dry. Look up casing leather on google.
Do you have a website or something I might be able to order something from you?
Hi. Not at the moment. I have an Etsy page where I list items for sale occasionally.
This is from the Mamluk era, not Turkish
I can tell you that it is Turkish as that’s where the guys lives that gifted it to me. If you read Özer’s post above, you will see exactly what the engravings are depicting.
Thanks for watching
Good to know! Thanks for leaving a comment.
My friend, what you do not know is that when the Turks occupied Egypt, Damascus and Baghdad, they stole everything and attributed it to themselves. They even stole carpets from mosques, and they also deported blacksmiths and carpenters against their will to Turkey. Everything you see in Turkey is stolen. They even say that the Damascus sword is Turkish.
You are a fantastic artisan, and I know nothing about leatherworking, but as a machinist and mechanical assembler, I have to tell you that you are using _entirely_ too much Loctite. You really shouldn't use more than a tiny drop on one side of the threads.
Thanks for the tip and for leaving a comment!
