As an English teacher-and someone who likes to shed light on what's happening in schools- I will say things have changed. While many places still use the same books in their curriculum, many teachers now let students choose the books they want to read, and then work with students through their interest. This means, while I might have a lesson on theme, I can teach students with a model text in a whole class lesson, then work with students as they read great books, graphic novels, or manga.
We once did a whole unit asking the question "Which superhero does the world need most today and why," and students had to research superheroes using comic books to prove their point in a debate. A local comic book store hooked us up with STACKS of comics to use.
Even in places where the curriculum still has the same tired books, teachers are being positive deviants and bringing in books that actually relate to students today.
Long time listener! Just thought I'd pop in on this one.
My HS teacher was great he told us he would give us extra credit if we read actually good books he recommended but wasn't allowed to officially talk about like Neuromancer or Dune
This is great and wish we had this when I was in High School. I do think there is real value in teaching certain books no matter what. 1984 for instance, remains relevant and will perhaps always be.
Man, teachers don't get enough recognition
@@grkpektis who wrote Neuromancer? I haven't heard of that one yet, but sounds good
As a current teacher (elementary level) I spent most of the time wishing I could respond to all of this.
"That ASTHMAR" lol
Took a sip of my coffee right as Andy said “I can’t feel my torso,” and now there is coffee all over my countertop
When I was in school I loved reading the classics. It was the only part of school that I really enjoyed. Give me Catcher in the Rye, Scarlet Letter, and Great Gatsby any day!
With dyslexia I couldn't stand reading in school because of the fact that not only were the books teachers close where very boring, but I mentally had a problem with it.
Now in my later life I love reading because I was able to select read things that are for entertainment instead of learning. It may take me longer to read books (as my dyslexia has never give away), but just being able to pick what you want to read is so much better than force reading.
Imagine the guy at Walgreens trying to make casual conversation about Andy’s Plan B purchases.
thats the next level of troll. instead of buying all of the chips, he just walks up to the register with 5 boxes of plan b
Maybe she never took the 5th plan b the kid at Walgreens is actually Andy’s kid and he’s so weird cause he’s trying to build up the courage to tell him
My HS teacher was great he told us he would give us extra credit if we read actually good books he recommended but wasn't allowed to officially talk about like Neuromancer or Dune
One thing I wished I learned sooner in college is that in so many classes I learned you could write essays based on any topic or media you love as long as you can tie it to the class. I wrote so many different essays on avatar the last air bender. It made doing them sooo much better and actually fun.
Great way to start off the week before the e3 madness
2 minutes in and I get an ad for the show Plan B you guys are talking about 😂
I’m a college English major who loves analyzing books, and even I hated reading assigned books in middle/high school. being able to pick my courses/what I read has vastly changed things
School was mostly a waste for me. I didnt figure out what I wanted to do with my life until I was 24 and I'm still working out how to make it happen
AP and IB tests and watching all the peers around me get college acceptance letters while I waited for mine was some of the worst anxiety of my life. And I didn't even know why I was really trying to go to college. I just knew I was supposed to.
Good book that is often in the curriculum, “Tuesdays with Morrie”. First time I cried reading a book 😭
When Nick said ASMR i thought they were talking DnD Aasimar.
I was never a fan of reading in school, but as I got older, I learned to appreciate it more. The problem is, I can only do it if I'm on a train or something, where there are no other distractions. I wish I had the patience to do it at home in my spare time.
I use to love reading R.L Stine in middle school and getting them free personal pans from Pizza Hut for it
When Nick said "asmr" phonetically, I questioned my life and how we got here. Lol
Where we're going, we don't need rails.
Shout out to Fullsail! I went there. I'm now 50 films into my career in VFX.
My parents made sure I was reading stuff I liked most of my childhood. Mostly Star Wars books but later on in my life I got around to the classics and really enjoyed them. The difference was that I loved reading before getting to the classics.
What a great way to start the week!
God it's been so long since I've enjoyed a KF Podcast. Welcome back boys
Usually the KF podcast eventually ends up going off the rails.... This episode however, started off the rails lmao
Lol Love Andy's takes
Yeah same. Had Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird. But we were also given a part of Sandman and Watchmen as a final exam. Guess it depends on the teacher
Everyone should watch Plan B. It was an incredible watch and truly refreshing to see some more people who look like my friends in a hilarious and relevant movie.
English courses were always my lowest graded classes for most of my life, despite being an avid reader. Then I took AP Lit and Lang, and I can't overstate how much those courses changed my perspective on so many facets of life. The classes were slower and more thorough with actually interesting things to read.
I don't think everyone can be interested in everything, but I genuinely believe that English courses could be impactful when taught the right way.
Oh man, the full crew finally all back together.
10 years ago I got a scholarship to Full Sail but couldn't take it due to family reasons. Wish I could've gone exactly for the reasons Tim talked about. I'm happy where I'm at now, but still think what-if. great episode!
America is ridiculous. Imagine working when you’re getting an education absurd....imagine paying for education that’s even more ridiculous
@@stonehorn4641 It absolutely is. It's an unnecessary drain on someone's mental and physical health. Nobody should have to work two jobs along with going to school. That's unsustainable and is why so many first generation students aren't able to complete their degree. If we want people to better their lives and earn a degree we need to make education as accessable as possible.
@@stonehorn4641 Your personal experience is not evidence of anything. Do research instead of just thinking with your feelings and you'll see the reality that not everyone can take out a loan and many low income people are stuck getting loans they won't be able to pay off for decades, assuming they can get work out of college at all. I get that "feels lazy to you" but facts aren't feelings.
@@stonehorn4641 We can afford it though. This is the richest country in the world. If the top 1% simply paid the same tax percentage that the working American did we could pay for education and health care for the entire country. But they are given free tax breaks and many megacorps like Netflix and Amazon pay literally no taxes at all
Education, healthcare, and public transport should ALL be free and universal basic income is far better idea than capitalism
That's simply not true but you can't expect brains from American cannon fodder
I'm a supporter of these guys on patreon but unable to catch the show live on Friday's due to work schedule, but atleast I have something to look forward to on Monday. Thanks for the fun content my dudes. 😉👍
Best book I ever read for school was "Salem's Lot". Great vampire book!
I remember enjoying Brave New World as an assigned book in highschool because it was very futuristic and honestly if you look into Aldous Huxley that dude was living through the 90s except it was the damn 20s what a legend
58:30 haha, yup! That was 100% the commercials I remember seeing on PBS while watching Bob Ross (yes, I watched Bob Ross while he was still on TV LMAO! Though I do supposed it could've been reruns by 1995-ish.)
Y’all dunk on the tan crew neck all the time but legit it is my favorite KF merch (and I have so much.) it’s so comfortable and I love the look, bring it back in other colors please!
I strongly strong recommend The Two Towers book, however fellowship can be very tedious at times
As a kid I read like crazy, devouring loads of books. This led to a love of books and set my academic path to an Art and English degree (UK). I never finished a book in my first 3 years and only finished ones that I wrote my dissertation on.
The UK school system seems a bit better with curriculum and choice since we do all subjects until year 9 (13/14 years old) where you choose your GCSE options. Year 10 and Year 11 is core subjects of English, maths, sciences and then the options you choice. Year 12&13 are A Levels which is 4 subjects you choose. Or you go to colleges to do a single subject with enough assessment/coursework to equal the credits. Then you go into a degree with modules that is based on your subject(s).
Whenever I hear the American school system, it never makes sense.
I never had any luck myself but some of my classmates watched Nolan’s Dunkirk for english study one year
Thats a good movie. Better than I thought it was gonna be
You start school at 7! Here in UK I started school at 8.45am till 3pm
Andy is always right!
Also why have none of y'all played Outer Wilds? Its my only Platinum thanks to Andy.
People, play Outer Wilds!
i crushed the reading programs in elementary school middle school i finished the 5th harry potter book the week it came out in like 4th or 5th grade
You guys need to do a review of all the sport feel good movies , coach Carter, remember the Titans, McFarland etc
Fuck nooooo. Those are the absolute worst. You can literally watch 1 then repeat the plot points of every other single one and be 100% accurate. It's just the same thing every time.
I really want Greg to name his kid Small Greg. And then he grows up to be 6'8"
The opening 10 minutes of this one is probably the closest Ive ever been to feeling how Tim feels when listening to Greg, Nick, and Andy go off the rails 😂😂😂
I love the fact that, as Greg started shitting on the American education system, he called it the "Educational System".
Really put a nail in their coffin there.
The Way Back, good movie!
I recommend it, for whatever that’s worth lol
As soon as I saw this title I died.
You all are having too much fun for this to be your jobs.
most related conversation about reading. Thanks for sharing guys. Books are just not engaging/rewarding as videogames are for me
I hope you'll read Jurassic Park and The Lost World before Jurassic Park in Review.
Andy literally just crawled out of bed.
I remember in High School that to make us appreciate Shakespeare's works, they got some theatrical troupe in to perform some scenes to show how the performances of the actors made the context/meaning of the work clearer (like the way the guy was saying stuff and the hip movements he was doing made it clear what he was saying was a bawdy joke), and I was like "Yeah, that's the problem. These are plays. We're supposed to be WATCHING this stuff, not just reading it.".
At least I got to read the original novel of Jurassic Park for a book report one time.
Yeah, similarly one of my high school teachers would play us audio performances of the Shakespeare plays, or have us essentially do a table read. He also explained all the dirty jokes, which of course made all us 16 year olds appreciate Shakespeare way more lol
You guys really should watch The Way Back it’s so fucking good, i think you’d like it.
When Greg was describing the premise of Unpregnant, I just knew in my heart that it was gonna be Missouri, and god fucking damnit it was. Why can't we do or be known for a good thing for once!
St. Louis has a free zoo with hippos so it's not all dark.
My buddy and I went to Dave & busters for the first time. Got food and they said it took them too long to bring out the appetizer (which it didn't at all and we told them that) so they gave us free game cards to play unlimited games (as long as they didn't give tickets). Then the bartender kept giving us "free" drinks. When ever the party next to us ordered a drink she made 2 more and brought them to us.
Never been back because nothing would top that. Went there with the intention of being there an hour. Spent 6 hours there!
To Kill A Mockingbird slaps still, f*** The Catcher and the Rye.
Speaking of single shot scenes. The film hunger has a 16 and half minute long shot 0 cuts. And that scene is where u get most of the dialogue for about 70 or 80% of the film is visual and the rest is dialogue.
Looking forward to those SnowBikeMike stripper stories 😄
Kevin, just watch it
Please do a snowbikemike podcast. Please
Teeth on a ******?!

Their opinions in this episode are the worst they've ever been, hahahaha
Am I like the only one who enjoyed Shakespeare?
Mayor is good but for the love of everything PLEASE watch Gangs of London
Another great murder mystery detective series s Broadchurch (David Tennet, Olivia Coleman) it’s on Netflix
Magic Treehouse. (Mic drop)

I HAD THE EXACT EXPERIENCE NICK WAS DESCRIBING!!! My ex bought the wrong condoms one time, and they had the numbing gel in it and it was horrible!!!
How did you all miss Harry Potter lol
Fake spoiler story: in middle school my friend told me that Dewey was the killer in scream 3 before I went to see it. I watched the whole movie 100% believing that was true. So much so that even after the killers were revealed I was smugly waiting for the secret reveal that was coming. When the credits rolled I was SHOCKED. Made the movie so much more memorable.
Don't listen to what anyone tells you, read. Read a lot, read often, read non-fiction and maybe most importantly read things you don't agree with. There are to many people out there who would rather keep you in ignorance so they can keep making a buck throwing their entertainment in your face. Read, go outside, socialize, talk to people regardless of who they are. Not everyone is a Joe Biden or Donald Trump. There's more to people than just their politics. Get out of your comfort zones and safe spaces and learn new things.
I know most of the conversation was a bit... but teachers get so much shit as it is that it just kind of feels like kicking someone while they're down. Don't really enjoy the joking. A lot of these complaints are unfairly levied against the teachers who have no control on large aspects of the curriculum. They may hate teaching that book as much as you hate reading it.
Teaching is a thankless job. Here's a sobering statistic for you. 50% of all teachers leave the profession forever within the first 5 years. Imagine going to college for 4 years and spending tens of thousands of dollars just to throw it all away in the same amount of time or less. That's how difficult the job can be. That's why there are rampant teacher shortages in the country, and that's why we're left with a lot of crappy teachers. The good ones don't want to stick around.
My dudes. Listen to Andy, watch NTBTS! Yes I'm Canadian, yes I'm biased.
That NXT stuff seems like kids are paying to work, sounds like a rip off to me.
You guys talking about not liking reading for an hour and a half isn’t your best work.
Ppl still wear condoms 🤔 lol
Alright, I'll disagree with Nick. First we gotta mention. IT literally doesn't matter what school you go to for the most part, that is some marketing nonsense America is famous for. If I could tell my self one thing when I was a kid is "If you want go to a community college, then use the greatest library in the world - the internet to build my git hub. I arguably didn't need to go to college either. I digress, my point is if anyone is reading this and has a job they're not satisfied with. College isn't really the answer. Experience goes a long way. I would not suggest anyone really go to computer science for any tech jobs for example, if a job requires a "Computer science degree" then ignore it. There's a good chance it's a bad job with tons of crunch time. Your portofolio and Github will get you a job before a computer science degree.
Idk. My roommate got a masters in computer science and was instantly hired out the door with a 6 figure salary. Other friend didn't bother with masters but still was hired instantly and paid 70k+.
Greg has always hated reading. Especially when you could play PATALON

Please, please do not go to Full Sail. Find a local state or community college with a decent program in film, animation, music production or any creative field that you’re interested in. Full Sail will put you into debt for decades upon decades giving you equal or in many cases subpar education you can find at a local college in your area for much, much less money. They’re in the business of selling dreams not helping you achieve them.
About True Detective: Season 1 is the best season of tv ever. It's amazing. Season 2 - utter garbage. Season 3 is fine. Great performances, but it just is no where near the intensity and amazing, cohesive vision of the first season.
Also they are talking over each other through the whole episode. They've been so good about it, but this one is hard to follow.
Let's not forget how todays schools teach a version of History and Literature that only showcase old white men.
Kevin gets uncomfortable too easily grow a spine
This podcast would have been better without Tim
That's both rude and untrue.
Really really horrible topic to start the pond cast laughing at the death of children and glorifying a horrible movie that supports the horrible abortion industry
I watched this whole podcast and I have no idea what you’re taking about
You can’t be a long time listener because thats tame compared to some of the old stuff 😂
@@taylorjack2130 the first 30minites promote abortion and it’s horrible
@@andrewhj2747 Do you need a trigger warning next time
