Lol I remember how I could only own a Gamecube while my friend had the PS2. I was so jealous because he had Final Fantasy 10 which seemed like the best of the best at that time. Looking back and having played FFX remaster I've come to realize that I had the better RPGs with Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos.
The game is almost criminally underrated. I fell in love with it from a demo disc a gamecrazy clerk gave me when I was buying something else. Snagged a copy as soon as I was able to and it became my all time favorite RPG
@@n1fffan Fist time I ever upvote for the right use of "underrated". Both games are gems, with clever battle system, clever storyline, exceptional artistic direction and pretty deep lore. Did you know that every location in Baten Kaitos is named after a real star except for places in Anuenue which have Hawaiian names and Mira which has a French terminology? Even Baten Kaitos itself is the name of a star in Cetus (Belly of the Sea Monster in Arabian, also known as Zeta Ceti), and it makes all the sense in the world game wise since Cetus is a whale. Speaking of Mira, it's known for its fluctuation between dimensions in the game... while in real life, Mira star (Omicron Ceti) is at times, one of the brightest stars of the sky and some other times, invisible to naked eye, on a 332 days cycle. I mean, this game is deep as fuck and got me hooked on astronomy, which is not necessarily something you expect from playing a video game.
@@tnyamaneko6093 Oh, every time I hear someone talk about Baten Kaitos in the wild, no matter which one they are talking about, I hear them say nothing but good thing, even the card based battle system, of which usually are considered the worst style in the genre was wonderful. I have had more experience with the first game than the second, but I honestly felt the battle system legitimately fun once I got the hang of it, and not once did I feel like I lost BECAUSE of the way the battle system is designed, but because of how I used it The game deserved more attention than it got among the RPG community even, and the only reason it didn't get more attention was because it was a gamecube exclusive title. I have turned others onto this game over the years, and firmly believe that it would EXPLODE in popularity were Bandai Namco to remaster them on modern consoles (not just Switch, but it definitely would find good home there)
@@n1fffan I think that at this point, we have to accept the fact that the licence is dead but it does not make the games any less awesome.. The card battle system was pretty much lambasted back in the days because in the fist iteration, it slowed the pace, but they "fixed" it in BKO, where it's much more dynamic (I dont have any issue with an uncharacteristically slow battle phase as long as it's well done, as it is in Baten Kaitos). Not even mentioning it's meant to be played from the beginning with the C stick and that a mistake in deck building can bite anyone in the ass. And forgetting that green bananas which are pretty hard and do damage when thrown at foes, become healing items after some time when they're ripe, this event having the unfortunate effect to unbalance the whole deck, keeping one on their toes about deck management. When talking about it in that way, it's absolutely deeper than the majority of RPGs battle systems. There's a whole lot of potential lost, but I do think that even if it's remastered on a newer system, it would not be commercially successful. Baten Kaitos has always been a rather niche franchise and it will always be cherished by people who did put their hands on those games, and people who acquire a proper NGC out of curiosity before realizing there's a lot of superb games exclusive to that system. I'd even say that most people know about those games because of their soundtracks rather than having the experience to play them. It's actually better that way in my opinion, as an early player of those games, I can say they are more and more appreciated among the gaming community and that the fanbase is built by hearing about it through the grapevine rather than by an aggressive advertisement campaign. It's a testament to their very real quality.
It was a new IP that looked kinda jank and outdated and honestly gave nobody a reason to be excited about it. It's a fantastic game, one of the best JRPGs ever made, but you won't know that until you play it.
