10 years in the army, you were taught that you didn't put the uniform on if you were going to look like a dirt bag. Just some basic respect in self and the uniform would fix most of that. Looking good on a parade field is not the best way to determine who can actually fight and win. Navy PT is not the same as Army or Marines. It’s almost non existent after boot camp in some fields. As for his dress code. A Navy Chief would have been all over him. You don’t wear your uniform like that in public. Maybe on a ship deployed, but not out in public. No socks? Totally “Unsatisfactory”.
@@Stinger913 self physical training is not the same as organized physical training. To the Army and the Marines, they needed their combat troops in top condition. It’s not that critical for many technical personnel within the Navy, and not enforced until the person is considered really out of shape. They were usually put into a special program. Failure in these programs usually means a general discharge. Depending on your location, the smaller ships had limited space or no space for working out. Navy bases and Aircraft carriers have designated gyms.
@@Stinger913 NROTC? Naval Reserve Officers Training Cadets? College kids. That’s Boot camp for potential officers. You are not Navy Seals (who actually do organize group PT) or the Construction Battalion (Fighting Sea Bees). The Sea Bees also do organizes PT, they are expected to be put into combat zones to build those runways. College kids take one semester of PT while in college.
PT standards are actually higher now than in WW1, and WW2. Training is also much longer than even Vietnam. Now the new PRT has come in that may have changed, but it's definitely higher.

Since one's overall fitness could become of crucial importance if the ship is attacked or disabled, maybe what they should do is require continuous improvement in physical fitness until the older fitness standards are met. Navy PT is not the same as Army or Marines. It’s almost non existent after boot camp in some fields. As for his dress code. A Navy Chief would have been all over him. You don’t wear your uniform like that in public. Maybe on a ship deployed, but not out in public. No socks? Totally “Unsatisfactory”.

@@Stinger913 self physical training is not the same as organized physical training. To the Army and the Marines, they needed their combat troops in top condition. It’s not that critical for many technical personnel within the Navy, and not enforced until the person is considered really out of shape. They were usually put into a special program. Failure in these programs usually means a general discharge.
Depending on your location, the smaller ships had limited space or no space for working out. Navy bases and Aircraft carriers have designated gyms.
@@Stinger913 NROTC? Naval Reserve Officers Training Cadets? College kids. That’s Boot camp for potential officers. You are not Navy Seals (who actually do organize group PT) or the Construction Battalion (Fighting Sea Bees). The Sea Bees also do organizes PT, they are expected to be put into combat zones to build those runways. College kids take one semester of PT while in college.

PT standards are actually higher now than in WW1, and WW2. Training is also much longer than even Vietnam. Now the new PRT has come in that may have changed, but it's definitely higher.
Wow, this guy was way too hard on that young man. Military personnel saw him, still recruited him and then accepted him into the Navy. Also, his duties are administrative, not physical. Since one's overall fitness could become of crucial importance if the ship is attacked or disabled, maybe what they should do is require continuous improvement in physical fitness until the older fitness standards are met. They certainly could do that.

Well, he is no Navy SEAL. Perhaps he is a boiler room tech? No need to be in shape to be a machinist's mate. Lots of dorks are computer geeks. He might be a very valuable computer geek. He won't be carrying a machine gun, he won't be marching 15 miles and carrying a 60 pound backpack. So he might not to be a physical specimen, but he won't need physical strength.
You need physical strength to man a hose if a fire breaks out onboard your ship or you need to drag an injured shipmate to safety. Just because he's at a desk doesn't mean he doesn't have collateral duties.
