A game you didn't mention for mechanical fashion (though I'm don't think the brands are real) was a little known title called "The World Ends With You"
One of the game mechanics was that equipment was all associated with certain brands, and you could control which brands were popular (changing the NPCs in an area) by equipping certain brands. You would also get Stat bonuses by wearing popular brands.
Of course this was a game by Tetsuya Nomura, who is really interested in fashion.

This was a great watch. I think the strongest section (or the one that grabbed me the most) was "How Fashion Impacts Gaming". This was my wandering question throughout the video, along with why you were drawn to the topic in the first place as it seemed very random, perhaps even arbitrary, but you convinced me.
I think you're spot on. To these companies, it isn't just advertising, it is sort of subliminal indoctrination. Planting a seed for the future customers, advertising is just another benefit. But not just that, the whole moving in on the "virtual lobby" as it were seems 100% in line. If they do this at a minuscule loss to these multi billion dollar companies, the loss is so small the potential future outcome far far outweighs it. And if they do these deals with a small gain, however small, then there is literally no bad move to be made in their eyes, only good ones, potentially great ones.
I was intrigued by the history of it all but wasn't too sure where the video was going. This section really brought it together and gave me the big think. Thanks for the time and effort on this one. Really helps to see the layers on layers of companies, marketing, and even the potential future ecosystem of the fashion world, if that's the word I am searching for.

Yes, I knew this one was a journey, and I expect it to do a lot worse simply because I have to convince the ephemeral viewership of the internet to sort of hop on the train and trust me to tie it all together and be interesting by the end. I'm really glad you found yourself able to do that!

This video doesn't even have atleast 50k views??? That crazy, It's so put together and brings up amazing points regarding fashion and thier place in games. As someone who loved avatar MMO's in the 2010's revolving around fashion and self expression like Ourworld and Moviestarplanet, these things have always been intrinsically linked for me.

Honestly had goosebumps when I heard you echo some of the points that I was trying to make in that article, more eloquently and more assertive than I could at the time and glad to see enthusiasm for fashion and gaming crossing over.

I think an interesting side note would be when high fashion companies didn’t really consider Video Games a viable until Supreme proved that absurdity sells more. As evidence you could of been the unofficial player models or skins like on games like Roblox, Minecraft, and gmod.

Great video. I never would've imagined how clever these fashion companies are with their advertising (more leaning on indoctrination).
I do have to admit, the line about 50% of our closets going digital in the future sent chills down my spine. Makes me think of a Ready Player One future, which I feel is a dystopian scenario. Not so much the fact that people are living in shanty towns and gaming all day, but more of the fact that some people will lose sense of reality and live a majority of their lives in the virtual world. It's already a prevalent problem with people on the internet, so imagine that cranked to 11. Really, this whole push for a metaverse sends a bad message in my opinion.

I've been playing DOTA 2 since it's launch about 9 years ago. You earn cosmetics just playing the game. Every single hero and even my courier all still use their default cosmetics. Very interesting video, even if I seem to be the antithesis of the topic discussed.

I think the argument that 'Fashion is important' only holds weight to people who either already think that, or at least buy into it (as you pointed out at 13:20). As you also point out, it is certainly important economically, but I think this is something we ought to discourage, not encourage or normalize.
Fashion as it manifests in the physical world is frequently escapism for the insecure. Whether that's just trying to fit in, or be cool, or seem trendy, it's very rarely a creative outlet and is instead used to prey on those looking for validation of some kind -- I think we'd agree at least that the marketing for fashion almost always reflects this.
That said, I do agree with the value in it's shorthand in the places where it's more of a sign post, not a cry for attention.
Wrapping this all up what I love about fashion in games though. You see a lot of the best parts of what fashion could be without the crap that comes with it, and you end up seeing some really creative ideas come from it. Most of the people that are big into fashion in video games are really trying for something unique and different and this is opposed to how fashion is manifest normally: People pursing a name instead of the substance. Whether it's Gucci, LVM, or Apple - people flock toward things that have a logo on them. That's a damn shame since there is so much space to really be creative.

Back in the day I was a casual player on PlayStation Home. Never spent money in it, but I remember winning a t-shirt for doing some mini game (I don't remember the details). Turns out it was an actual clothing company advertising their store. When I looked up the shirt that my avatar had so I could buy it IRL, I think it was around $30-35. I had a job and the money to buy it but by the time I went to finally pull the trigger, Home was shutting down and I didn't remember the clothing brand name. I was stupid and didn't bookmark many things back then. 🤦

The way Balenciaga is going makes me so sad, really. Cristóbal Balenciaga fought against Haute Couture, he didn't like high fashion that much because people kept copying him. He shut down his fashion house in 1968, only four years before his death.
The people who decided to resurrect the brand in the 2000s have shat all over his vision.
Anyway, amazing video essay about a cross over of creative mediums that a lot of people don't think about!

I'd personally love to see Tetsuya Nomura or Kazuma Kaneko design a fashion line. I also like the idea of the "default skin" being an anti-consumerist/pro-gamer statement.

This is an extremely well done video and I can tell you put a lot of effort into it. In fact I like both of the videos I've seen from you today so I subscribed. With all that work you did though, I'm shocked that you somehow managed to call harajuku fashion "lolicon." I know you meant no harm but this misconception is an old one that is hurtful to the women and girls who wear these type of clothes. A lot of men use this misconception that girls are dressing up to sexually appeal to older men to prey on them. I'm normally not the kind of person to comment corrections but this is an issue that affects my peers and I quite common. I hope you understand.

=Notes on the video in this pinned comment
-I accidentally said "lolicon" and not "lolita," and this was incorrect. I apologize. I will see if I can edit that part to maintain the intent without affecting the video.
-I actually contacted almost every company in this video. I started working on this in October, so it took a couple months as I got enough information to talk about it. Interestingly, there's almost no one whose done any sort of video like this. I had almost no sources to start with, and had to compile all this information from a lot of original sources. Unfortunately, none of these companies were willing to go on the record and I couldn't get anybody to be on camera.
-One concept that I didn't go over much is China's young and wealthy middle class who are very interested in luxury products, and are playing these games. I couldn't find any good evidence to talk about, and no one was willing to get on camera. Luxury brands have been focusing on ways to introduce their brands to these luxury buyers.

I loved the last two games on PSP portable Dark mirror and Logan's Shadow that I stood in line for hours many many years ago during black Friday just to get them much less. I used to play this at work during my lunch hour in the break room back then with some mini speakers and people would actually sit next to me and watch especially in game storyline and remember the time when there was a scene with a hostage teenage girl and the abductor and they just said "Shut the F up little girl!" LMAO and people in the room where like "Woah Woah!! This is in a game?..lol . I definitely need to know what happened to gabe and Lian after as it left us in suspense at the end wondering if it really happened?

Terrible take on the situation. Or rather, incredibly biased and one-sided. Just like "incredibly environment-sensitive" brands have destroyed the environment and THEN suddenly realized errors of their ways, they destroy gaming environment.
Judging from video, there are only positives, or, at least, "I don't care about this, let it be". But what about the negatives? What about the fact that increasing inclusion of real-world brands into gaming hurts player-driven customization and modding? What about that those brands surely had their hand in growing microtransaction epidemic, or at very least benefit from it so much they won't do anything to stop it? What about artistic vision of games being possibly compromised in order to stuff a branded costume in?
None of this is adressed, or, at least, is swept under the rug by awed speeches about the metaverse and the Bright and Happy [Citation needed] Future.
