My advice to anybody with a Snapper is, if you're getting ready to work on it, watch Jim first. It will save you time, frustration, and dollars also.
Jim is the Snapper guru. No doubt about that.

One of the best videos I have ever seen. The filming was a solid 10. My dad bought one of the first Snapper Comets when they first came out. I was eleven years old. We didn't own a bushhog so I mowed the yard and the fields. I'm retired now and I bought a used 9 HP from a neighbor so I could get into the tight places my oturn want fit. My belt broke a few weeks back and I needed a refresher course on how to install the new belt. Now it come back to me. Thanks so much.

Hi Jim, I've had snapper rear engine mowers for agout.20 years. My first had a 30" deck and a 8 hp briggs and Stratton. My new one a 12.5 hp intek with a 28" deck. I am in the glacial moraine country of north central wisconsin. We have more rocks and gravel than we have grass. ( very slight exaggeration).
With these mowers I can go up 45 degree slopes, and down 55 degree slopes. Carefully. It takes about 6 -6.5 hours to mow it all.
All this is to say that despite all the people that try to convince me to get a larger mower, this is what fits this property. ( I'm about 220 lbs and 68 years old.)
    Your videos have been EXTREMELY!!
Helpful to me over the years. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with those of us who need a helping hand. There does.not seem to be a lot of that attitude left in this country. Yours is appreciated.

    I just today put a Belt on, 1st 1 over 20 years.
I have changed the Drive Disk years back, had to refreshen my knowledge, and I ordered a new disk this morning.
I watched this GREAT video couplevtimes yesterday, came back this morning to figure out the Belt situation, what direction to install, V down or up, because of the Idle Arm, I guess 8 did it right, V down.
To adjust mine, which distance was 1" didn't have to, my Center Arm has a Pin and Carter Key with a stack of Washers.
I suppose I pull the Pin out, pull the Arm out past to where I can put the Washers behind?
Yes, the direction of the Belt in the Pullys had me, especially the Idle Arm.
I crank her here in a bit after fluids settle 🤞.

@@chrislnflorida5192 the belt that is supposed to be on a snapper is a double V the larger V goes into the pulleys on the engine and the spindle the smaller V goes into the idler pulley you can change and go to a standard V belt, but you have to get a flat idler pulley and replace the original

OK I need you to try something if you can stand your machine up on its back grab onto the two front tires and try to twist the tube that goes inside the rear case it should turn easily if it doesn’t turn then it’s rusted up and you have to break it loose don’t let the machine stand out more than five or 10 minutes without taking off the battery. Once you get a tube broke loose then you’ll be able to slide it to tighten your belt. Jim

Jim, the pulley on my drive disc came apart so I had to replace the drive assembly disc on my 33 inch rear engine rider. Here were the challenges. Getting those allen screws lose. Also, I couldn't have gotten the drive assembly off within a pulley puller. Removing the (right leg side) engine front mount bolt (tight working space). Lining the bolts back up to place the engine back in place. A little trick I thought of. From the bottom of the engine take a metal bit that is a little larger than the bolt holes and drill into the holes maybe an 1/8 of an inch to give it some shoulder to help the bolts align when you place the engine back down over the bolts. This really helps when you are by working by yourself. I am writing you to say I knew if I ran into something I needed help on, you would be there for me. Thanks Jim. Job complete!

Hey Jim. Great video. really need guys like you posting these DIYs, so keep em coming. Recently worked on Snapper 131416bve that had one stationary and one movable idler pulleys. each idler pulley was v-groove, which seemed strange to me. mower kept breaking belts. local small engine repair service worked on this thing several times, but mower kept breaking belts. when i looked it up i found this model was supposed to use a double v type belt. never seen this before (guess the repair pros at the local shop hadn't either). ordered it, put it on, and that issue is now history.

You mentioned that belts aren't meant to bend backward. I know A section and B section, etc but I'd never heard of the AA section that my little owners book called for. It's cut with a "v" on both top and bottom - almost rounding it. That apparently allows the Idler to run without the irritation of a flat-top. Perhaps they saw it would twist, as you mentioned.

Both my old and new belts have about 2"of play but seem to work fine and in fact I dont see how pulling the tube out will make any difference except making the belt tighter, not closer together. The only way theyre getting closer together is if the idler pulley can move farther over but it can't. Secondly, my tube doesn't have a clamp, it has a bunch of big washers/spacers and a cotter pin.

G'Day Jim, Queensland is one of the states in Australia - long coastline and a massive inland area and occupies maybe 1/5th of Australia size. Snappers were a bit expensive so didn't sell too good down here plus a bit small but I love mine for it's design features and the thought that went into it's initial conception. Bit like the original VW. My current problem with my Snapper is a loose belt, and I mean Loose!! I'll follow your advice and adjust. Regards and good luck.

Need Replacement BELT WIDTH Advice: Series 15 33" deck w/dual idler pulley system (non-adjustable): Broken belt appeared to be a 5/8" wide 74" Manual says 7043844YP Briggs # but no specs on width other than 74" length. (it may be a 6-sided AA belt)
Hardware and auto parts industrial/fraction belts available in 74 x 1/2" and all cross into the YP #.
The 1/2" belt sits in the BOTTOM of the DEEP motor and spindle pulleys and screeches/slips as the blade comes up to speed.
With blade engaged, engine off, if I attempt to turn the blade, it slips on the engine pulley.
FEAR: afraid the actual YP belt will be 1/2'" and do the same thing
    OPINION: use the 74 x 5/8 hardware/auto parts belt.

Well, if this is a SnapperRear engine rider is supposed to have a Double The Built. If you want to put a standard V belt on it, you’ll have to change the idler pulley to a flat pulley instead of a V pulley. Jim

    • @NoferTrunions
      @NoferTrunions Год назад

@@jimjackson9381 I think that is correct for the non-33" decks which have only a single idler. The 33 has a double idler system: one is a v-belt pulley and the "middle pulley" is a flat bottom that is clearly designed to contact the flat top of the belt not unlike an automotive timing belt tensioner.
This is troublesome because if the correct belt is a double V, then why the flat bottom pulley instead of another V-pulley that reverse wraps the belt?
I'm beginning to wonder if someone replaced the reverse wrap pulley with a flat bottom so a conventional V-belt could be used???

Thanks for the priceless information! I think I may need to adjust my belt but not sure. I got a Snapper built in 2011 a few months back and it has been great but the past month or so its been losing power. It looked brand new and I know was well taken care of when I got it. I changed the spark plug and the air filter and oil look good. It loses power when I turn the blades on and if I am mowing a long stretch (about 100 feet) it will slow down until it just stops, even on a flat surface. Also it has lost power and doesn't want to go up any type of hill. Any suggestions of what that may be? I may try changing the fuel filter next but from what I see it looks good. It starts right up and sounds normal like it always has. I noticed the gas cap float isn't working and maybe it needs a new cap and there is a pressure issue? Any suggestions would help. Thanks for the great videos!

There is a vent in the gas cap. Make sure that is open and clear now when you say the machine slows down, are you saying the engine itself is slowing down to an idle or is the blade slowing down or is the machine it’s self slowing down in speed in the engine is still running OK?

    • @FunWithGuns
      @FunWithGuns Год назад

@jimjackson9381 okay I will try the gas cap. The engine and blade still run fine but the mower itself is slowing down to a stop. That's in 5th gear and on rabbit mode. Even on turtle it does this. I try down shifting but it still slows down to a stop eventually.

    Question:
I have a 28in 9hp with a ninja mulching blade. Consistently now when I get into grass that is only somewhat thick, I can look down and see (now that I have taken the belt deck cover off to see what's going on) I see that the main spindle pulley will slow down than completely stall out and the belt can even smoke sometimes. And I will have to back up and disengage the blade then come back again when the blade has momentum again. I should note that this happens when I am in speed #1 as slow as I goes. What would you suggest to remedy this? Could the belt be to stretched out and not be transferring power or do those mulching blades need a certain type of deck or plastic side shroud? Let me know if you need more info. Thanks for all of us you are helping.

The first thing you want to do is take the belt off of the spindle engage the mower deck as if you were going to mow with it and turn the spindle to see if the spindle is turning freely, if it does then check your belt for bad spots , if the belt looks good put it back on and check the belt tension you want to have about an inch and a quarter between the belt by the idler pulley, try that and let me know if it helps or not talk to you later Jim

I figured the 0.016 difference in shaft diameter wouldn't be a big deal, for the drive disc its not, it works perfect drives around no issue, but the belt now slaps really bad to the point that you can't engage the blade, could this be caused by the slight out of roundness that the crankshaft pulley is at now due to the offset caused by shaft diameter difference? .016 difference between a 25 mm shaft in a 1 inch shaft does not sound like it’s a big deal But and there’s always a butt when it’s spinning at 3000 RPM’s that .016 inch is going to make a lot of difference now if you know somebody that works in a machine shop or you have a machine shop close by you you can stop in and ask them if you could have a small piece of shim stock to cut and fit around your crankshaft and then slide your drive disk over it and that will illuminate the run out issue and you won’t have to get rid of the engine you just got or live with this tremendous vibration issue Give that a shot and see if you can find some shim stock if not send me your name and address to my email and I’ll cut you a piece of shim stock and mail it to you to take care of your issue. So I guess to answer your original question yes it should work you’re going to have to stretch out your frame to get your 1 inch space between the belts. Jim

I have the new 2019 classic 33" snapper and want to add an hour meter. What type of hour meter do you recommend and would like details on how to connect the wires to make it work. I have the Intec 15.5 HP engine. Any help is appreciate.

@@jimjackson9381 I could wait a week and just check back here. I wanted to add a analog style hour meter and also interested in best location to put it. I like this one on Amazon www.amazon.com/Docooler%C2%AE-Hourmeter-Tachometer-Engines-Rectangular/dp/B00V9JHX38/ref=sr_1_18?keywords=hour+meter&qid=1559154389&s=gateway&sr=8-18-spell
I'd really appreciate any help in how to wire it up; As a retired Navy VIetNam vet it would save me $$$ in labor.
      Thanks....

What length belt goes on a snapper Model 28085 S?

      Corey Walter
Snapper doesn't give a size in inches on their belts they just have part numbers cording to my books a 28, 30 and a 33 inch deck all take the same size belt. The belt on a snapper is a double V has a V on the front and the back side and that's because the idler pulley is not a flat one it's a v pulley so you pretty much have to use their belts in less you change the idler pulley and put a flat one on if you want to do that I have a spare belt I can measure and give you the size and then you can buy one at your hardware store. Thanks jim

Did you match it to your old one to see if it was the right size, sounds to me like they sent you the wrong belt. Jim
