    Thank you so much for this video - i'm building a panel mount for the first time and seeing the number of pins on the back of the combo sockets confused the hell out of me!

    I'm soldering 16 of right now, and your video is the only reason I knew how these worked. The 9 pin (switched normal) plus a digital (dante) ML16-D Tascam going into an older mixer: crest xr-24, with nothing plugged in, the out of the digital interface is 'up' on the board. Very cool, if I want mic, I flip it on the mixer, if I want synth or guitar in, I plug in and it takes over. Very very cool, thanks for demystifying these. I just wanted to check back on the vid to make sure I was good. :D

    If I watched correctly, there is only a way to detect an input in the 6,3mm jack right? So you can't detect xlr inputs?

    Thank you so much for this video. There is such a limited supply of resources about these and some of the other Neutrik product line when it comes to wiring and mounting to panels, in chassis, etc. So your efforts are greatly appreciated.
    Something else I'd like to see is the process of installing combo jacks, as well as regular XLR male and female jacks, and perhaps an EtherCON jack into a panel. Perhaps a pre-punched panel or a custom punched panel. I am specifically trying to learn things like front vs. rear mounting (I know the Combos are rear-only), and particularly if I want to use a DSS-* plate for each, can I do that and how. (I'm assuming EtherCON is D-style but am not sure.)
    Can you hook us up?

  • @mikey38632

    Also to add to my other comment - My intended use for what I learned in this video is to put a couple of Combos on a rack panel, then go from each Combo to an XLR male connector that plugs into a speaker processor/DriveRack. The intention is that I can feed Line Level from a mixer with 1/4" balanced outs (a Behringer analog mixer) OR from one with XLR balanced outs (my X-Air XR18) and send to the same equipment (the DriveRack). So again, the incoming cable(s) from a mixer might have XLR or TRS connectors and I want either to be plug-n-play with 1 receptacle space.
    Do you recommend the 9-pole for this purpose and how would you wire it? I think it's explained in this video but might have gone a smidgen over my head without actual demonstration (not an issue with your video, just that I learn better that way).
    Again, I REALLY appreciate that you made this video and find it rather useful while preparing to make my own rack panels to interface equipment in a portable rig.

    Thanks for the informative video! Not much info around on these.
    I have a dilemma and I thought you might be able to help? I built a small patch bay with two '6' pins and a headphone jack. Basically just an extension so I can plugin on the edge of the desk, instead of over all the stuff on my desk.
    I put the jumpers on the '6' pin combo's and ran the balanced cable to a Neutrik male XLR to input into my interface. (I did 2x of these)
    When using a TS 1/4" (Guitar) I'm losing over 30db of gain at the interface! I tried just the TRS pins without jumpers, and also snipped the 'R' pin connection on the '6' pin combo, so as to only pass mono, but it's still the same deal.
    I'm so out of ideas! Cheers!

    This is the best info available on these jacks. Can I wire these to "break" phantom power to a TRS connection with a common (only one) output? Thanks for the great work!

    • @AlphatoneAudio
      @AlphatoneAudio  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching! If I'm understanding your question correctly, the switching jack (NCJ9FI-S / Right side) should accomplish this for you. Admittedly, I haven't delved quite that deeply into the problems presented by phantom power with TRS connections, but I'd review the information in this video around 6:30 to see if that will work for your application. Sorry if that's not what you're referring to or not a perfect solution.

      @@AlphatoneAudio Thanks so much for the reply. My initial thinking is that this isn't a possibility, since PhPwr is being sent backward from the mixer/preamp/etc. to the microphone using the same cabling as for the signal. There would have to be some way to separate the PhPwr from the audio, and cut only that. There may be some routing options from within a board or patch panel, but I'd like to use these jacks at a distance.
      Phantom power through TRS isn't really worth the risk, I don't think. I'd love it if somebody proved me wrong...
      Thanks again!

    This is a simple and really helpful video - thanks for posting. I'm building a panel on a 19" rack cabinet which will have an input which leads into the back of my neve 1073dpa (xlr combi) This is just so i don't need to keep reaching round the back!
    I'm pretty sure i need a non- switching combi, but i'm a bit stumped about the whole grounding issue! I didn't quite grasp what you were saying about it. I'm seeing 2-pole / 3-pole jack options too. So overwhelming! What do you suggest I go with? thanks if you have time to answer this

    • @AlphatoneAudio
      @AlphatoneAudio  2 года назад

      You can always take any of the parts above and simply wire them as a standard XLR jack without even connecting the TRS terminals. If you need simple, keep it simple. Alternatively, if don't want to use your preamp for line/instrument-level signals, just get a standard, non-combo jack.

  • @phillaboody

    I'm not using the switched combo jacks but unless i missed it you didn't mention that the NCJ5FI-S doesn't have a R solder cup meaning that it is an unbalanced/Mono/TS 1/4" connection. It would be useful information to have if someone were to get these and want a balanced/TRS 1/4" connection.

    So are these jacks always screwed to the panel from the outside of the panel inward? Is there a how-to on flush-mount installing these things? I have the dimensinos from the neutrik drawings on their site, but didn't see any instructional info on how these are supposed to actually mount. And the A-8-1 screws are only 8 mm long and I don't even though if that also includes the head. So once you get through a 1/4" panel, there is only a couple mm or less left to sink into the neutrik screw bosses. Anyone help?

    Hey, I think you made a mistake. At 9-pin connector, Input is supposed to be wired to normal pin, while jumpers should be between TRS and 123 pins for Output.

    Doesn’t look like enough room to input a 1/4” cable in to these??? I have some and they seem to stop about 90% of the way in. Advice??? Just never makes a normal solid connection and won’t work.

  • @rbrjoel

    Would it be possible to have it so, if I plugged a 1/4" in, it would be coming from the output of my interface, and if I plugged an XLR in, it would be an input?

    Specific to the switching version if it were wired up to a single XLR cable; are there any issues if you had these in a patchbay that is then hooked up to an A/D converter that supplies phantom to multiple inputs at a time? In that, if you had inputs 1-2 requiring 48v, but 3-4 are 1/4" (and obviously don't need it), would the fact that it is jumpered to TN RN SN send 48v to the 1/4" and present any problems?
    On a fundamental level as well, would plugging a 1/4" into this, which is then wired to connect via the XLR input on the A/D, present any line/mic level discrepancies? The A/D also has the combo plugs (which spurred the idea to seek out a combo plug patchbay to retain that flexibility), but would need to connected via XLR to make use of phantom still. Thanks.

    • @AlphatoneAudio
      @AlphatoneAudio  4 года назад +1

      Sending phantom power to anything with 1/4" jacks is always a risk as that equipment generally wasn't designed for it. Phantom works well with XLR plugs because the pins are always isolated from one another. On any 1/4", 1/8", TT patching solution, the different contact points on the plug make intermittent contact with points in the jack they're not intended to touch during normal use. Depending on how the inputs/outputs of your gear are designed, this can cause any number of problems.
      As for your mic/line discrepancy question, it has nothing to do with the physical connector being used, and everything to do with input/output impedances and operating levels of the gear you're connecting. Plan your patching carefully!

      @@AlphatoneAudio hi Great tut! I have a similar question about the 'normalizing' wiring on the switching jacks (NCJ9I-S)
      I want to prevent 48VPP (accidentally) running down to the TRS inputs, but be able to power XLR inputs. Is it wired XLR123 and jumpered to TN RN SN (instead of the TRS)?
      Your help greatly appreciated!
      best

    • @AlphatoneAudio
      @AlphatoneAudio  3 года назад

      @@kk.students The XLR pins aren't connected to the 1/4" pins internally. There's no risk of phantom power hitting pins TN RN SN as long as you run them to a separate destination than pins 1, 2, and 3.

    Thanks for the great video, very helpful. I have an audio interface with a row of combo inputs, one of which no longer works with an XLR input. It will work with quarter inch so I'm wondering how might ths have occured and how can I fix it without opening up the unit (as I don't wish to void warranty). I'm dealing with tech support for the product and they have been very helpful but limited to firmware resets at this stage. Any suggestions that might help? Is this likely to be a digital switching issue or a broken lead inside the desk? Many thanks 'Jamie.

    • @AlphatoneAudio
      @AlphatoneAudio  4 года назад

      If you have an audio interface, it wouldn't use these particular jacks. There's a whole different group of parts that are meant for PCB assembly. For sure you will void your warranty if you open the unit, so I would just work with support unless you are VERY comfortable with PCB rework.
