    Great job on driving, you're definitely getting the hang of it. I'll add my 2-cents about preselecting the range shift before shifting from 5th into 6th. Flip the range lever way ahead of your shift -- it won't do anything until you move the shifter through Neutral, when it will instantaneously shift the gearbox into the upper range. It will make that range transition easier and faster. (In fact, you can flip the lever for Hi Range any time you're still accelerating in low range, preparing to shift to the next gear - just remember that IF you shift through Neutral, the transmission will upshift to the Hi Range instantly.
    The same is true for downshifting. If you're slowing down, might shift down a couple of gears in Hi Range while braking... flip the range lever down, then ONLY move the gearshift into your starting gear just as you're almost stopped. The range selector will change as soon as you pass through Neutral (it's all pneumatic).
    RE: "floating the gears". That's how I learned too, decades ago. And I did that for many years. But eventually I worked for a fleet company and got to know one of the mechanics. He said he could tell from the truck which drivers "floated the gears" and which drivers double-clutched (which just eases the huge torque load applied to the gearbox). The wear on the gear train was very evident. Clutches are way cheaper to replace than transmissions.
    Double-clutching isn't a big deal. It's an "in-out-in-out" procedure that should last lest than a second. But it provides a very brief "safety cushion" for the time you are are changing gears, especially if you might miss a gear, and are trying to find the "next available gear".)

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 9 месяцев назад +1

      And a big mistake that some make who don't understand the transmissions that use a clutch brake which are most trucks ( other then baby trucks and pickups/cars that use a fully synchronized transmission ) press the clutch pedal to the floor when double clutching while under way or pressing it in all the way before they come to a stop and that is guaranteed to destroy the clutch brake in fairly short order. Only pressing the clutch pedal that last inch or so to the floor when the truck is stopped moving to stop the rotation of the transmission gears to select a gear to start out in, of course this comment isn't for you ... its for those who are understandably completely unfamiliar with highway tractors with manual transmissions and their quirks. Definitely the truck transmission manufactures do not condone floating gears, double clutching is the method they intend to be used although like myself ... yes I float the gears most of the time unless a situation calls for breaking torque for quicker down shifts etc.

  • @lavernmcnitt138
    @lavernmcnitt138 9 месяцев назад +68

    FYI. With the Eaton 10 speed, it is OK to flip the splitter switch while still in 5th gear. It will not shift untill you move the shift lever out of 5th gear.

      @lavernmcnitt138 is right. The shifting instructions sticker that should be either on the dash or the driver’s sun visor says “Preselect all range shifts (move range selector before moving shift lever)”.

    • @js7127
      @js7127 9 месяцев назад +2

      Trying not to sound negative but think you are #30 to let her know to flip the switch early. Yes it does cause extra wear on the shift fork but not enough to damage it badly so just the way many do it. And actually Pre-select range shifts means before you put it into the next gear- ie not trying to go from 1st to 6th in low before selecting hi range. Does not mean selecting before you take it out of the previous gear.

    • @snappingbear
      @snappingbear 9 месяцев назад +5

      It's not just OK, it's the ONLY way to do it without damaging the transmission's synchronizer. The range selector should only be pre-selected when in gear and never when in neutral.

    Laura, the switch from the lower range will go smoother if you flip the switch up before you come out of gear that way while you are coming over for fifth you won't have to wait at all and it will drop right in on the high side. BTW I have over 4 million miles combined on the road for over 30 years and I have never ever double clutched to shift, not even once.

    Laura, I'm a Truck driver and learned how to drive on a 10 Spd. Don't get too wrapped up in the "double clutch debate" if it's working for you, keep going. Floating will save you left knee issues as you age. (Even if you are somehow wrong transmissions are less expensive to replace than body parts anyways :P) Especially as you're bouncing around town not going up and down huge mountains--which would hypothetically put more strain on the gears.... It's just not worth arguing with people. You're shifting is great. I'm pulling for you guys to get 500K subs, Especially Ms. Pepper!!!

    lil Lady,,, float the gears! Sometimes if you get truck and trailer in a bind turning and turning on unlevel ground you may need to double clutch. I have been driving big trucks for 40 years. I shift the truck the way it needs to be shifted. Different conditions require different methods. You just keep doing what works for you and ignore what others think or say!

    • @snappingbear
      @snappingbear 9 месяцев назад

      Yep, double clutching is a skill she should learn especially given she drives different rigs besides the 10 sp Eaton. In fact Eaton recommends double clutching that transmission in many circumstances. Also, did you think she was shifting a little early? It sounded to me like she was.

    • @ronniehahn1885
      @ronniehahn1885 9 месяцев назад

      @@snappingbear yeah maybe a lil early but I couldnt see the road or conditions and maybe she was loaded light? What I was trying to tell her is do what works for her driving style. If she tries to double clutch she would probably miss gears and be a lil rough on the sliding clutches. Some people have a hard time learning to time when they push the pedal in unison of the shift. Push it in to hit neutral between gears then push it in to engage the next gear. It just takes practice. But in the mean time float them until she gets more driving time under her belt.

    Aren't you worried about the coyotes getting pepper? I once lived in a large subdivision across from an old dilapidated pottery plant that backed up to corn fields. One summer, a pack of coyotes moved in and made their den. Almost every night I'd hear them yelping after a kill. In a matter of one year they cleared the entire subdivision of all the outside cats. They even almost got my dogs one night. The neighbors finally became aware of what was happening to their cats. Hunters must have gone in and cleared the den because I don't recall hearing the yelping for about that long before I moved.

    You're a farmer who has many Jobs. Truck driver among these. Whatever works for you as far as shifting. I've never heard much grinding. Just be safe and sure to change from high to low and visa versa on the range selector when going from high to low. It will not change on it's own as I read somewhere in the comments.

    You are doing an excellent job shifting that truck. If you ever get tired of farming I will get you a gig hauling logs out of the swamp!

    I was going to say the same thing about that transmission that somebody else already said . With that transmission , when you're in 5th gear you can go to the high side of the splitter while still in 5th gear and it won't shift unless the stick gets moved into the neutral position , but then I don't know if you're doing it that way as a timing mechanism by moving your hand or not , just saying by going to the high side while still in 5th might throw your timing off for getting 6th gear smoothly . It may make a clunking sound but it won't hurt it any , I did it that way for 21 years .
