Its the way a song is sung that makes all the difference! Lonnie's style was so full of feeling and he always rose to a climax at the end. The intro was always the soft strum of the guitar, and then the song developed. Great stuff. I met Dickie Bishop in Greek street skiffle cellar in the 1950's who played with Lonnie. ( Pete 'Kiwi'Keegan)
"Codswallop" meaning Lonnie was under rated in later life, or that he was a major influence on such as The Beatles? The Beatles reference is a fact. Go ask Paul McCartney... www.triumphpc.com/mersey-beat/beatles/lonniedonegan-beatles2.shtml
He was the first person we had heard of from Britain to get to the coveted No. 1 in the charts....He was the MAN . Said Paul McCARTNEY once. Thanks ...F
After listening to all the versions of this song....IMHO, Lonnie Donegans version is the best. There is more "feeling" in the way he sings it. Everyone to their own tho' isn't it?
Each to their own, but I like the Travelling Wilburys' version, although that is about the only one of "theirs" that I do like. Lonnie was a great musician and showman.
To my mind Lonnie was the most influential performer of the 20th century. He influenced all the first wave of rock guitarists: Page, Clapton, Harrison, Beck. Rock as we know it wouldn't have existed without him.
Such a great song covered by many great artists, British did plenty. It is a wonderful song personally I love the song and love listening to every vrsion.
incredible cut. John Lennon did this, on one of his first demos, and it wrenched me in the gut, but this version is the first to make me cry while watching it, and I am 72 yrs. I've listened to allot of artist, but none has made me cry. Thank you for the post.
I was nobody, i was a child, I WAS NOBODY'S CHILD, but i was never alone, i was never alone, Not any time, this is my memory, and my memoral to th past, to the presemt amd the future, God loves you, open your eyes and know he loves you
Wow! Fabulous. This song and Bobby Darin's Artificial Flowers must be the saddest songs every recorded. Artificial Flowers was so sad that a lot of radio stations banned it back in 1960. These songs remind me of what's important in life - caring for one another. Thanks for upload this - it is the first time I've heard it. Ed
a different from his style but it is the best version of this song.I once heard a young lady step up and ask the group if she could sing this she made a great job of it at a pub in London Colney ST ALBANS UK
Yes, I heard him on a Five Live interview in July 2015 saying none of his wave of early rock guitarists would have happened without Lonnie's inspiration.
I heard this for the first time yesterday and have never heard anything so awful and depressing! What made it worse was the guy singing it couldn't, it was horrific ... just like the song!
So good,so bloody original...There is only one Lonnie...he could not be touched....Miss the old rascal.
love this version, sung with feeling in blue's style the way it should be
This song is so untypical of the usual style of Lonnie songs, but he nails it. The very best version of this song I've heard. Legend.
Lonnie was absolutely brilliant and a real character.. :)
a great song, not a washboard in sight..just our lonnie ..terrific
John Robertson up

Classic. Lonnie was so under-rated in later life yet without Lonnie there may well have been no Beatles, such was his influence back in the day.

I agree with you Colin
Totally. It shocks me that Rolling Stone found no room for him in their top 100 guitarists, or singers.
I don't agree with that at all ,
He was the first person we had heard of from Britain to get to the coveted No. 1 in the charts....He was the MAN . Said Paul McCARTNEY once. Thanks ...F

Everyone to their own tho' isn't it?
Agreed, Neville. But I believe the first version you hear of a song always remains in your mind as the "best" or "favourite". For me, it's Hank Snow.

Ein echter Weltstar zu seiner Zeit.
This song among others are the songs that no one else but Lonnie could have given to us. He shaped my musical life in the 50's.
I was nobody, i was a child, I WAS NOBODY'S CHILD, but i was never alone, i was never alone, Not any time, this is my memory, and my memoral to th past, to the presemt amd the future, God loves you, open your eyes and know he loves you
THE repeat THE version of this song. I learned this in the 1950's from his record and have had it on my gig list ever since.
Dad used to sit me on his knee and sing it love this song
Wow... very nicely done.
I femember first hearing this song played by Lonnie Donigan in a coffee bar in Soho in 1962. Great days.
Wow! Fabulous. This song and Bobby Darin's Artificial Flowers must be the saddest songs every recorded. Artificial Flowers was so sad that a lot of radio stations banned it back in 1960. It's a sad song alright., and as for Artificial Flowers, I'm a massive BD fan and know the song well.

Jimmy Page has reference to this Great Guitarist!!
Yes, I heard him on a Five Live interview in July 2015 saying none of his wave of early rock guitarists would have happened without Lonnie's inspiration.
Is the same guy that did Does Your Chewing Gum Lose its Flavour?
Yes, and so many others like "7 golden daffodils", "Nobody loves like an Irishman" and so on. Great artist - sadly he isn't known any more.
Kenneth Besselman. Yip it is😀
Tammy Wynette greatest hits Tammy Wynette greatest hits
Paul is this everything from the clips or is there more or do you have the full entire bits say after or other guests
I think Lonnie's record is better, with Denny Wright's beautiful guitar work.
Agree with you. That is some damn good guitar picking.
I share this guy's surname, I wonder if I am a distant relative of his?
Listen to Hank Snow`s version .

Very good
I used to date Lonnie's daughter, Corrina!

Says too many orphans around the world.
Not a good version
I heard this for the first time yesterday and have never heard anything so awful and depressing! What made it worse was the guy singing it couldn't, it was horrific ... just like the song!
I'm afraid you are alone with this impression, M'lady. But to each it own. Donnegan still rules.
Then you have just got to be a sad person. But that's ok.
And yet, you stayed long enough to massage your own ego?
😆 well just move on and have a nice life, it's not trip advisor or juke box jury
@@jamespasifull what the fuck you talking about? This song is a pile of shit ... bit like yourself.
