To connect the Katana to your computer you need a USB (2 or 3, it doesn't matter) to USB-B cable, this isn't supplied with the amp.
Printers use this type of cable so most people will have one available. The rear socket on the Katana is the USB-B one.
Might seem obvious, but as this tutorial is assuming no experience I thought it worth mentioning.
good call - but think it must be usb2, 3 has the plug to big for Katana!
The plug type for the back of the Katana is USB-B, that's the slightly odd shaped one that's been around for years.
USB-A to give it its correct name (apologies, I should have done that originally, ) goes into your computer. [USB-A 2.0 & 3.0 are physically the same, the later has faster data transfer and blue plastic parts to help identification].
You can still download the Tone Studio software without connecting it to the amp. I'd urge even technophobes to stick with it as there are real benefits to even basic tweaks with these great little amps.
@@UltimateAccuracy The read me file states this device doesn't work on USB 3.0... hence hours of wasted time with it plugged into USB 3.0 !!
It might might not operate at USB 3 speeds, but should automatically default to USB 2 speeds which is irrelevant in this application. I've just tried mine and it functions via either type of USB port, and with either a USB 2 or 3 to USB-B cable, in all combinations.
The only exceptions are really old motherboards and associated USB controllers or you need a software update. Some motherboards produced before USB 3 was widely adopted had controllers which required a software update to work reliably, most of those have probably been replaced several times over by now.

Thank you so much in advance for all of this Justin. I am a little bit older than your average beginner and I recently bought this amp. I am quite lucky to find time to practice let alone time to learn how to use all the features this amp has to offer. This is a blessing.
5 years later apparently and it's still just as difficult as ever, I've downloaded katana stuff, the driver, and my computer is not letting me do anything with those 2 downloads, I feel defeated, a $270 amp that I can't have fun with and just use patches as I please, bout to start breaking stuff.
I got mine to work...I couldnt tell you how and I was totaly suprised it did but this took hours of my time.
Just got my Boss Katana Mk II today. Because of this video I am ready to roll without the headaches, thank you.

It took me some time, but I finally got my Boss Katana Tone studio install thank you for all your help your video was excellent.
I got myself a Katana Artist, so will also be looking forward to your videos, Justin ^^. I got it a little bit ago and did a tun of research on youtube and elsewhere about it before getting it. Rob Chapman's sound was amazing, although it was a sponsored video, but he seems to genuinely like the amp and uses it at home; mentions it in various other videos. Kind of happy to see you playing around with it now ^^. I used to have a Yamaha THR10. Sadly had to leave my amp and electric guitar back on the other side of the world when I moved, along with my nylon-stringed acoustic (my first guitar. Still love it, miss it), since I had to haul a full sized keyboard (Roland A-88), and my steel-stringed new acquisition (beautiful Crafter gae-8/n).. I bought the improved Katana with my last paycheck at work, actually ^^. I love it. It is a hefty beast and I can only see myself using the 0,5 watt setting at home, but the sounds it makes are beautiful. And from what I gathered, the better speaker has more oomph and breaks up less. I just really wanted something very versatile that I can play quietly at home and use for recording (though I bought a cheap audio interface for that as well (Focusrite Scarlett Solo)), that would save me from buying a tun of pedals for now, that I wouldn't grow out of too soon. I don't know about the future, but right now I think the Artist is just the ticket for that, if not as compact and economical as the 50.

Hey Justin, you checked out the “sneaky amps”? If you google that or “boss katana sneaky amps“, you can find out a bunch of stuff about it. But as far as I’ve read, it basically let’s you access most/all the amp models & fx from something like the Boss ME100 multi fx/modeler pedal

Hi I wonder if you can help me I recently purchased the boss Katana 50 amp and I am having issues setting up the amp I have downloaded the boss studio but every time I click on it it says no device is detected I get the “no device found” pop up that offers me the chance to either use it offline, refresh, or download the driver (again). Using a 2011 13 inch MacBook

Same here- I'm running windows 11 and it won't open or read the files. I've called sweetwater several times for tech help, tried finding tech help from Roland or bass. No luck.

WINDOWS 10 USERS WITH A DRIVER ISSUE: I have worked out what my issue was. Just FYI - I couldn't get the drivers automatically because my version of windows wasn't updated, and for whatever reason, the ability to update was 'broken'. So I found a thing from Microsoft called the 'windows media creation tool' , which was a way of manually downloading the updates and rolling my OS into a 'new' version of Windows 10. Once this was done, the OS immediately found and installed the drivers once I plugged the amp in! Hopefully this info helps somebody else!

I just got a Katana Artist after getting fed up with hissing, buzzing, valve amps! I was fairly familiar with Boss Tone Studio, having previously used it with a Boss GT-100 multi-effects unit. I had missed a couple of Boss effects as I have been using a Helix recently - it was nice to get the Blues Driver and AutoWah back as 2 of the many effects available built in to the amp.. The GA-FC foot controller is pretty much essential for channel changing and effects on/off, and allows me to change channels and switch on effects without using up buttons on the Helix to send MIDI controls to the amp.
I am pretty happy with the Katana, although I am still getting to grips with EQ on the various channels etc. Getting organised with 8 presets on the Katana, and all the presets and effects on the Helix, is going to take a while.
Exploring the settings on the Tone Studio patches does reveal some interesting tips for making your own patches. For example there are some with very mid-scooped and odd looking EQs, and a (Purple Haze) Fuzz with drive at only 15%, but they seem to work.
It would be nice if Boss can work out some other way of remotely accessing the other banks of effects in each preset (Green, Red, Amber etc) without actually having to push buttons on the front of the amp. Three simultaneous effects per preset is enough, but it would be great to be able to choose from 9 instead of 3 via footswitches or MIDI.

I have an iMac and when I start the software it ask to download the Katana amp system program. I did and restarted but it keeps asking? Plus when I first download the drivers and software it locked up my imac and I have to reload my OS! Is the a Boss help page to help? It this software worth the pain? any help would be appreciated

I has some similar problems with this. No exe file launched so I went into downloads and then extracted all the files. The set up wizard then kicked in. Seems to be ok. Going from start it was trying to deal with the zip files using some weird programme that was inapprpriate. Hope this helps someone. Can't wait to get to the next problem. :-)
I have the katana head have been using the version two for ages, now I have a combo which won't recognize version two but can I install version 3?? Given up after hours of dead ends

Do you need your computer always plugged into the amp to use the tone studio program ? Will the patches only work with a computer connected or can you load them into the amp permanently?

can anyone help me with this, i have a mac, all audio and midi input and outputs are selected as katana, i have the driver as well connected to the katana and everything seems fine until i open the tone studio and it just tells me that i selected the wrong device when i select katana through the tone studio, nothing else like ableton or logic is running through the background, idk what I'm missing or why this is so complicated to connect. I even reinstalled everything restarted my computer a couple of times and still nothing.

Installing on my Desktop was a piece of cake trying to get it to work on my laptop was an absolute pain.
I have a katana 100 i play a 2009 gibson sg special that works with all tones and changes, i put in my jackson soloist completly different, volume changes, tones are completly different too, almost sounds acoustic

I couldn’t get the tone studio too download for my katana artist 100 on my iMac or my Mac air notebook all computers updated, when the amp came out last year, working through tech support through my retailer. I returned the amp and bought a Marshall Dsl40cr, plug your Guitar in and play.
OK Please help. My iMac crashed hard and my Katana 100 Head quite working. It's saying the driver is not updated. But when i went to update it it didnt work

hello, can someone help me, I connect the katana 50mk2 to the pc and it recognizes it and it even comes out in the sound icon, but when I open the application it always sends me that I must update it, when I try it with all the steps of the BOSS pages , when always granting the cable, I should leave the icon on the disks of the device like (C :) but it doesn't come out either, does this happen to someone else, help me ...?

I saw another RUclips video where it said you should make sure you have the latest firmware loaded to your amp before using Tone Central. Maybe this is why so many people are having problems

I've got it to work after trying the following:
Completely shut down my computer
Disconnect all usb devices except for mouse and keyboard
Turn computer back on
Connect the amp to your computer usb and turn on the amp
Wait a few minutes and you will see that a folder was created in your start menu titled "BOSS" and inside "Katana"
Installing the Tone Studio comes after and is a bit more complicated

If only it was that easy Justin. Done exactly what you have and every time I open Tone Studio it asks me to download the driver, which had already been downloaded. Many times!
I had trouble initially as well. Read on Reddit that I needed to download the Mark II version of the Tone Studio software. Did that and everything just worked. Hope that helps!
I purchased a Katana 50 and have been frustrated trying to set up to the boss tone studio. I have installed the driver several times removing older versions and I even purchased another USB cable thinking that was the problem. I keep getting a Katana Connection Failure message. I installed Katana Driver Ver 1.0 for Mac OS/ OSX also the Boss tone studio for Katana Ver.4.0 for MAC OS/ OSX which I put in applications. Everything looks good but I am unable to control the amp through the app. I am running 10.11.6 Macbook pro. I have spent hours trying to get it to work, and would like a bit of help. I love the amp, but really need to get this working. There really is not much information on trouble shooting this problem available. Any help in the right direction will be appreciated, at this point I don’t know where else to turn.

I have done all of this now i'm not getting any sound from my computer... Input is set to Katana output set to headphone port on mac.
Guitar plugged into Katana, USB connected to mac.
YES the volume on guitar, amp, gain etc has all been adjusted and my Mac settings are correct for input / output.
Boss have not really made this user friendly as the struggles updating the Amp itself prior to this was a frustrating process too searching for the answers...
More help would be appreciated. :)

Hi Jason, great video, thanks. I just picked up my Katana this week & at last got the chance to set it up only yesterday. There’s so much here that is all I managed to do, I opened the Tone centre place, looked at it and closed it as I’m trying to set the amp up to run through my Focusrite USB audio interface which appears to be more of a challenge than it should be as it doesn’t work as the manual states. Anyway, for PC users on Windows 10 I found that it automatically downloads & installs the Katana driver. Seriously looking forward to the next instalment on this topic. Have you visited Birdworld yet?

Yo when i tried to install the new 4.0 version, it said i needed adobe air in order to launch it. So i then tried to install the old 2.01 version, but that didnt work either since its too old and it cant find my amp to connect to. Someone please help, like why does it have to be so damn hard
Windows 10 users are having major problems with this software. I cannot get the Tone Studio to recognize the Katana. My computer sees it. The software does not :(
patriotpizzaman you need to allow the microphone on Win 10.
Got to start, then settings, then privacy.
Turn microphone on and then select which apps you want to let the microphone use.
Should solve the problem 👍🏻

@@samkirkham743 Didn't work yet. I have it selected to "On" for both "Allow apps to access your microphone" and "Allow desktop apps to access your microphone". Is the Tone Studio supposed to be one of the apps on the list? Because it isn't, even though I have it downloaded and on my desktop.
Can you use the Katana to go directly into a DAW without having to use a Focusrite Scarlett?

I've been trying to install the driver for over an hour. My MacBook is 2012 model, running 10.15.7 I wouldn't recommend trying to do this if you have one like me. It's not worth the time & frustration. I'll keep persevering though.
Hi, I have the MKII and a MacBook running OS 10.15. Ive downloaded and installed the latest driver and the latest application from the website. When I connect the katana to my mac, I received the message that I was running an older version of the software and I proceeded to next screen I received a message saying that i wasn’t connected to a co outer and that I’d be running the application in offline mode. It seems a bit crazy since I’m certain that I’ve installed the latest software and driver.
I realized that there was a third download that makes it work, however it’s not without a bug or two.when I connect the amp to garage band it sometimes works flawlessly and other times it tells me that there are more than one interface connected....
I’m struggling to download the Studio and the drivers on my MacOS M1, please can someone help me :(
Awesome! I'm looking forward to the next few videos as this is where I am stuck. Boss doesn't give you a manual and nobody is doing videos like the ones you'll be doing. I'm looking forward to learning the boss studio software from an experienced musican as yourself!!!
The User Guide for the Tone Studio is included in the zip file that you downloaded to install it. Check for the BTS_KATANA_eng02_W pdf file in the extracted folder in your Downloads.

There's not much to it. I got a paper copy as well with my amp and there's several pages in English and the rest is the same info repeated in about 5 other languages.
I just got my Katana 50 several days ago and I do love it. I had a problem loading the driver for Tone Studio until I switched USB ports from the front of my computer to the rear posts...then it works automatically with Windows 10.
I downloaded the software and the driver. I connected the USB cable but every time I try to use the tone studio it says my amp is not connected to the computer. How can I fix this problem? I have it connected and even used a different USB cable but still not recognizing the amp. Please help if possible?

I wasn't sure if I had to buy this amp, my Fender modeling amp sucked, I saw your other unboxing video and I said, let's buy it, it sounds to good for an amp this price, I feel that I paid less than what is really worth.

For those who have been avoiding Tone Studio...don't! There is a noise suppressor on the Katana that is "off" by default and can only be turned on in Tone Studio. That alone is worth getting into Tone Studio.

Thanks for your katana 50 videos! How can I connect a looper pedal to it? The 50 has very limited pedal options i believe. After watching your looper video it looks like a ton of fun and I want to connect one to my 50.
Mahble I have the ktn 100 w you have to run the looper into the fx loop in the back
@@jessesmotov956 I did some more research and the 50 does not have an fx loop on it. I could use a Looper with it but I wouldn't be able to have different effects for the loop and the live playing. I ended up exchanging the 50 for the 100 which does have the effects loop. Thanks!

Hello Justin! I don’t know what is seems to be the problem but after I install it like you do I always get this message “Katana connection failure. Please select external MIDI/AUDIO device connection. But i chose the second katana and use it on offline mode, but is not normal. Can you tell me something about it to solve this issue? I did everything the same way you did, but at the end when i started up the software, it said i didn’t have the driver, and even when i re installed the driver it still said I still didn’t have it and i couldn’t see my amp as an option, I have my amp hooked up, what do i do?

7:04 is that I can't get past. I'm on windows 10. My windows says "Check the pairing device and connecting divice again. I have a MIDID IN menu and a MIDI OUT menu. And no matter what I select, it says "wrong device".

Google: Microsoft Update Catalog and type in Windows 10 Katana. Download the 2 files & extract them. One will say "Files". Open that, then open the RDDP1179 application after connecting the amp to your pc and turning it on. Then reopen/refresh the boss tone studio & select 'Katana'
I clicked on the download for the studio software and it wont download. I keep getting "network failure" even though my internet is fine.
solved the problem. I was on google chrome when trying to download it. I tried downloading it using internet explorer and the download was interrupted several times but I kept clicking "resume download" until I got it completley downloaded. What a pain in the ass.

Yes surprised that boss have made it so complicated to install the drivers and software, the manual tells you to install the driver first then you find out all you have to do is plug the damn thing in switched on and windows 10 installs the driver for you. Great, now how the hell do you install Tone Studio? All you get is a wild goose chase around various windows. When I try to install the software there is no bloody Exe file. Where is this suppose to be? Where's the Boss?
