What a year of starting to label your blankets!! I hope you enjoy making these labels, much better than buying them don't you agree?
She may have used 2 strands of embroidery thread.
This is so practical and it gives your hands and mind a break from crochet for a little while 👏🏼 if you’re anything like me and can’t have your hands idle ... even for a minute 🤦♀️
I might make some labels today :)
PS- although I was born in Australia, my first language was Finnish because my dad’s English wasn’t too great in the 70s. Anyway my point is Mummu is finnish for grandma and is what my kids call my mum and now my little grandchildren call me Mummu 💕
Totally agree
I just love it ! My Nanny used to buy sew on labels that said made by grandma
I think your Grandmother used a mixture of back stitch on some and Stem stitch on other letters Anja. Love the blankets
Your stories are so lovely about your grandmother. I must start adding labels too . Thank you for showing us how xx
You are so welcome Thank you for watching Play Hooky with Me ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
I’m so glad you have so many nice memories of your grandma.
I’m inspired as I’m 69 want to crochet for my grandkids
You can do it Linda, and they will be treasured for many years I'm sure, Anja x

Do you think if I use muslin as a label …like you did on your blankets it will hold up during washing
I made a single stitch blanket for my neighbor using Bernat blanket yarn.
I ordered a bunch of it and have made other single stitch blankets as well.
Such a sweet memory of your grandma. I love your videos. Thank you for sharing

My grandmother used to back her quilts with bed sheets years ago.

Your right Julie about the stitch! I also enjoyed your tips Anja about threading the needle and tying a knot. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
I really like this idea , there are lots of videos on this for quilting but not afghans . I also think the lining is genius 🤗

Hi Anya what a nice thing to do follow in your grandma s footsteps and start making labels for your blankets, really enjoyed this tutorial Kaye x
Thanks so much 😊 Thanks for watching my video Kaye Fudge and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
The fabric is called muslin here in USA, that's the "unbleached " variety there. There is also a thicker "canvas" type weight too. I believe that's what we call duck cloth. I used them to make labels for my quilts.
Because of your inspiration, I made my first label for my granddaughters crochet blanket I made her!!! I'm so proud of it! I wish I could send you a picture of it (:
That is awesome Laura, well done! Anja x
2nd label completed last night! Can't tell you how much I appreciate your video!!!
Thank you Anja, lovely and very helpful video.
The stitch is called- the back stitch, I use it all the time.
Very nice idea your grandma had with making labels! They remind me of embroidery I did years ago 🤩 A lovely personal touch!!♥️She was brilliant and so talented 🌹🌹🌹
You are so welcome!
You do a great job at explaining about the label making Anja! 😀👍I appreciated seeing you use the embroidery hoop and then adding the label without the hoop (for those of us without a hoop)🙏 Seeing a hand sewn project is motivating, as I don't have a sewing machine. (Yet? Who knows when I may acquire one)
And I enjoy hearing the little tips and nuances your Grandmother passed on. Very helpful tutorial
Thank you! 😊
I love it. And Moeke for passing it down no matter where she got it. It's simple things like this that is a dying art.
I would much more enjoy having done the label myself than have a professional do it.
It makes the project more personal as a gift... and it satisfies me also when I see the label.
I can say; "Yea I did do that didn't I ! Lol.😄
I was so afraid you were going to prick your finger on those pins.
You made me gasp for breath a couple of times. 😲
Thanks for watching my video Donna Hutchinson and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
I am going to add a label! Don't think I have ever done that with an afghan. I am going to add to the label 'Ode to Anna CAL' along with the year. Enjoying making this afghan. Thanks so much! Take Care!

Your Moeke’s blankets and labels are beautiful! And her tips for threading the needle and tying a knot are much better than how I was taught as a child. I think your stitch is called a running back stitch and it’s beautiful! ❤️
Geweldig toch he. Bedankt om te kijken hoor. Tot ziens...
Great video, a lovely thoughtful touch to add to our projects. Thank you. X

I will try this kind of label on my next Afghan.
Thank you for watching Tammy Robinson ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Yes Ophelia it is called calico, we use it here in Jamaica a lot for embroidery
We call it muslin in US. Calico would be colorful small print cottons to us. Funny it's different everywhere.

Just started watching. I have been eagerly awaiting this one. Thank you so much Anja. That was terrific. i am thrilled to know how to label my blankets now.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching my video Helen Long and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
Interesting tutorial. You are using ‘back stitch’ but the originals were done in ‘stem stitch’ which is similar to back stitch but the stitches overlap slightly instead of lining up in a straight line. It gives a thicker line. Also when you are using the embroidery hoop you are better off going front to back, back to front in two movements, not trying to go in and out in one movement, as that stretches the fabric out of shape. Nice idea though and love the cushions.
Thanks for watching my video Diane Antone and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
I’m so pleased you’ve shown how these labels are done. Do you have any plans on doing a tutorial on lining a project? xxStay safexx
I'll have think about that but thanks for the suggestion. Thank you for watching Super Mario Maker 2 Glitch Hunters ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Always wanted to know how these where made. Thanks
Glad you like them! Thank you for watching Irene ter Schure ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Yes it is back stitch. I also thread my needle the same way😀
Wonderful! Thank you for watching Andrea ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
hey Anja de stiksteek herrinner ik mij als klein meisje om mijn poppekleertjes te maken en gebruik het soms nog voor kleine stukjes ! fantastishe video en de ode aan jullie MOEKE xx
Thanks for watching my video frieda vanslembrouck and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
Howdy! It looks like the sewing stitch you're using is called a "Back Stitch" I know cross stitchers like to use the back stitch to add outlines to their work.
Thanks for watching my video DragonZene and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
The way you threaded the needle was how I was taught to thread thicker threads, like wool. And the stiches are just 'back stitch'. Also I would use 3 or 4 strands of embroidery thread together.
Thank you for watching Beth Doughty ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Anja, calico shrink you should wash it before you use it x
Thanks for the tip! Thanks for watching my video Susanne Butler and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
Anja...did you mamd that small needle carrying case yourself? Thats handy! I actually thread my darning needle the same way you showed here. And the knot on the end of the thread I learned when learning to sew. It's a quilters knot I believe. Thank you for this video!!!
Yes I did. Thank you for watching Anonymous Amy ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
If you cut the label out with pinking shears you won't need to hem it. Also iron on interfacing will keep the thread secure.
Thanks for your comment Coral Dean Dean and keep watching! Anja xxx🌈💕🌈
Please I would love to make that crocheted stars in this video
Thanks for watching my video Opal Renee' Davis and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
I imagine that you can make a label using coffee filters? Press it down on the lid and attach it to the blanket. Or buy a sample sewing patch at Walmart? One must try these things to see if they work. But when I do my blankets for my friends and family members, perhaps even myself, I'll remember this video. This is the most cutest idea ever! So thank you.
I'm not quite sure what you mean about the coffee filters, please could you explain?!! Thank you, Anja x
@@OpheliaTalks you can make labels using them.
its a running stich
Debbie Rothman no a running stitch is going in and out without stoping sort of like a basting stitch. She used a back stitch and her grandma used a stem stitch.
Thank you for watching Debbie Rothman ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
I found your channel today and already watched a few of your videos. Making the labels ourselves is a lovely touch. I love to crochet blankets but I wonder, what do you do to store all the blankets you keep? Some I make for others or to donate but I also have a collection building.
Thank you so much Kathy, thank you for watching! Please don't forget to subscribe to my channel (it's absolutely free!) so you get notified of every new video I post. Anja x

The blue you’re sewing label on
The fabric you chose for the labels looks more like a heavy muslin than canvas. Embroidery floss is my first choice for making labels. My labels are usually stitched directly onto the embroidery projects I complete.
I doubt your grandmother would have used an embroidery hoop for her labels since she would have been concerned with wasting fabric.
You're using a technique called backstitches. The stem stitch would give you better coverage for a more visible line.
Thanks for the tips!
Als ik het zou doe dan zou ik het DMC borduur garen gebruiken en dan splijten dus 2of 3 draden ervan nemen.
Je deed de stik steek bij het jaartal en je moeke deed de steelsteek.
Thanks for your comment Bermerpap and keep watching! Anja xxx🌈💕🌈
It’s called back stitch I should know because I have been sewing since I was 7
Thank you for watching Heidi C ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
It's called "Back Stitch". When one doesn't have a sewing machine this is the stitch that is used.
And your grandma used the "Stem Stitch" often used to embroider the stems of flowers; hence the name 😁
Thank you for watching Patricia Mendonca ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Your grandma used a stem stitch.
Thank you for watching BeatlesFanSonia ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
Etsy has some beautiful leather ones that look professional
Buttermilk Bay Soap ooh I know and there are lots of companies out there that will make them professionally for you but isn’t there something rather special about making your own and putting your love, care and attention into them?
Ophelia Talks nope because I have great grandmother handmade blankets and labels you can barely read over time because she wrote them in ink. I guess the embroidery thread may last longer.
Buttermilk Bay Soap I am sure that she used what was available to her at the time.... why don’t you embroider over it?
I love your videos Anja i would so appreciate it if you could answer a question i posted on your rainbow cushion thank you 😊
I'll check it out! Thank you for watching Lindsey C ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
I think it is called a running stitch..
Thanks for watching my video Kathy Newhart and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕

Are we going to put backing on the CAL?
no we only need a small peace of fabric to create the label for the blanket. Thanks for watching my video Refined4hizpurpose and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
