55 years in metro Detroit, never heard of Michigan Sauce. My wife, 54 years all over Metro Detroit (and her first 14 years in the hood), never heard of Michigan sauce. That said, I'll be making this soon, it looks fantastic. And that dude who said put 1/4 in the blender gets the prize, that's how you make a gangster chili sauce if you can't simmer it for 36 hours. I'm effing starving now, apex predator looking for a coney dog lol.
From Northern NY, where "Michigan's" are the hotdog of choice and said to be native to the area. Many Northern New Yorker's think Plattsburgh, NY was the original place to create the "Michigan Hot Dog" that we grew up with and love to this day. Yes, we know about the person/family that moved to Plattsburgh from Michigan who created this amazing AND I mean amazingly unique Hot Dog sauce; but no-one seems to really know the actual "REAL" story behind it all. It's something I'd love to learn and I appreciate this video explaining the origins of the recipe. BOTTOM LINE, this recipe is beyond delicious and so glad it's been posted. 100%, I'll be trying this out. Thanks Jeni!
Hi jeni! I just found your channel and love this version of coney dog sauce. Born and raised in detroit, I can see that we are particular about our coney dogs. I didn't realize how particular, until I saw a "chili dog" elsewhere and realized I much prefer our coney dog sauce. I like your recipe! I add some flour to make a roux, to have that saucey /thick consistency. I know they add beef heart but today I will add ground liver and see how we do. Usually I just use straight beef. You are a joy to watch - very bubbly and bright smile! Thank you for sharing!
If it's a Flint Coney Dog you have to use ground up Beef Heart and the sauce is dryer than Detroit Coney Dog. If you mix the Flint chilli and Detoit chilli together it's then called a Saginaw Coney Dog.
Ok. I know beef heart is used in it, bout I will not be putting it in mine!!! I don’t care it’s not authentic enough for you, if you already know how to make it, why bother watching my video??? Why not just move on keyboard warrior!!!
Watching this video today Is seeing true authentic Mexican sauce, I totally agree no tomato in the enchilada sauce!!This sauce resembles my Barbacoa sauce! thank you for all your hard work and making this video and your collaboration in Canuary!💕
I'm also an Arizona transplant from Michigan . Detroit coney grill is pretty similar to coney Island. They have a truck and a couple stores. One in Scottdale and one in tempe.
I’m from Kalamazoo and when ever I go home in the summer I make a trip to the hotdog stand, and I usually buy a box full to take on my drive home back to Colorado !!! I have ben searching the web all over trying to find the recipe for the chili and hotdogs and I have yet to find one that is like what I get when I buy them!??!!!
That's right ! Don't you dare call it a chili dog lol we don't do beans or none of that. Good job girl! Just missing the beef heart and little bit more runnier. Just moved to VA and I am craving a coney dog, gotta try your recipe!
That's Jeni for sharing. I'm going to try this! My son loves chili dogs. I like your channel , glad I found you. I was wondering if by chance this could be canned?
it's true- i lived in Detroit 28 years ago (moved to Manhattan) and i have never found the same kind of "chili" anywhere else. Nathan's chili dog is completely different. Never heard it called a "sauce" before, but i agree with your assessment, it is more of a bolognese. Also, i remember someone at Athen's Coney Island telling me that they make their's with beef hearts? or was it beef liver? and most Detroit Chili is made with that.
Hi Jeni. I heard about you from Linda's Pantry. I must make this sauce for sure. I live in Tucson, AZ. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. God Bless You.
I live in Detroit, have me entire life. This looks good but isn’t Detroit coney sauce. Michigan sauce? I’ve never heard of that. Coneys come from Detroit. The sauce has beef suet and ground beef hearts, sounds gross This is why you buy it. Lol The hot sauce? Not in coney sauce. It is very very mild.
I’m well aware of the history and yes, other states call it Michigan sauce. I was born and raised there as well! I know it’s made with liver but I’m not putting that in mine!
Hi I just tried your recipe everything worked out good except it is hot I’m going to try it again another time and maybe only put five chili powders in other than that it was very good

Non Michiganders refer to it as Michigan sauce! 😄

That looks so good. The only beverage that goes with a Detroit Dog would be a Strohs beer or a can of Vernors Ginger Ale !
I've lived in Coney Island New York City, but I'm from Jackson Michigan, and there is no Coney like the Michigan County, especially the Jackson 😊🤘🏻

Me too, I did find out however they make it it is from scratch!
So am I. I love Coney Island. Do you like the downtown one, or the West Main place. I like downtown because that's where I had my first Coney there.
Omg you read my mind. I was just going to ask about canning it. I’ll be watching for that video. I’ve been looking for a hot dog chilli sauce.
That's some high powered stuff. I have never used that much chili powder before.
😑
Wow! Can't imagine 10 tablespoons of chili powder!
It’s not as much as think when it comes to chili! 😊
Jeni,
Can you can this? It would have to be for the meat time pressure canned, right? I am still new to PC my foods. Love all your videos.
I have a canned version recipe!

Thanks! Next time I will add the beef liver! Otherwise, this is as close as I can get it! I miss those dogs too! 😊

You're welcome and thank you! I'm so glad you found me! Yes, this can be canned!! I'm going to can some up myself. 🙂

I haven't heard it was made with beef heart or liver, but that would make sense with the texture it has. However the real recipe is made, I love it! 😃
There are places that traditionally make it with beef heart.
beef hearts i believe are the original coney sauce
Hi Jeni! Can this be canned as written or does it need extra vinegar...? Thanks! You have the best recipes!!
It can be canned, I put a little vinegar in it. At some point, I will do a canning video on it. 🙂I like to keep it on the shelf.
Did you ever make the canning video
I live in the thumb. I used to live at Camelback Terrace 😎
I was raised in Flint, Mi Have you ever tried our sauce? Another great Hot dog sauce. Thanks for your video
Mmmmm! Looks yummy! Would this recipe work for pressure canning?
Yes it absolutely does! 🙂
Mmmm looks so good, seems time consuming, but worth the wait. Thanks for sharing that, I must make this stuff.
It's so good and so worth it! 🙂

Welcome!! Thanks for coming over! I hope you love the sauce as much as I do! I visited Tucson not long ago 🙂
Is there a difference between a chili dog sauce and a coney dog sauce?
Chili sauce has more chili flavor, coney sauce is more beefy flavor. 😊
@@Jeni_Gough thanks!

And, usually a little bit spicier.
I would really enjoy a canning version of this. I'm originally from Dearborn
I swear I’m gonna do it in the next few months! 😀
It comes from Upstate New York in the Plattsburg area!
I disagree
Hey Jeni! I live in Wisconsin so i will add cheese of course! LOL!! Thanks for sharing this!
You're welcome! I hope you love it! 😀
Detroit coney sauce is made with ground beef and ground cow heart.
Liver, I know, I leave it out!!!!!
Here from Lindas pantry. I'm from Cincinnati and grew up with Cinci chili style dogs
Hello and welcome! 🙂
Hi Jeni. Do you have a canning video for this yet?
No, I still need to do it!!
Guess what? The Root Beer Stand opens in March. And I've had it twice already. Coney Island is open year round.
What is your hot dog of choice to use? Looks great. I will have to try this for camping trips
Hope you enjoy! I always use Hebrew hot dogs, they are my fav! 🙂

Hi love your video can you tell me if the sauce is hot spicy people I know don’t like really hot food and I don’t mean temperature I mean spicy hot
This is chili sauce NOT spicy hot at all!
Hi I just tried your recipe everything worked out good except it is hot I’m going to try it again another time and maybe only put five chili powders in other than that it was very good
Did you go to Central Michigan? Or visit with friends?
I’m from Western Michigan and I did visit in February I wanted to go back this summer but I was not able.
@@Jeni_Gough You look similar to a girl I meet in the late 90s early 2000s at CMU. I'm going to try your recipe thanks
@@beforeyourimmigrants8471 it wasn’t me, my collage days were early 90’s 😊
Plainwell trojans! Favorite hot dog stand/joint ?
Root beer stand!! 😀
Can you can this h d sauce I will be making it this week.
Yes, add a little extra beef broth to it. Process pints 75 minutes and quarts 90 minute es. 😊
Jackson does it weigh different
Sorry, I'm not sure what you are asking.
I was right there with you until the mustard part haha. Would it totally destroy the integrity to leave that out? Cuz mustard and me .... nope.
😂 No, you can leave it out!
Would love to see the canning video for your sauce.
Coming soon!! 😀
A and w
A & W just isn't the same anymore, but I loved it in the 70's and 80's!
Have to use Frank's? I don't care for Frank's sauce at all.
That is the one we have always used and hot sauces have different flavors to them, but if you don't like it, use what you like. 🙂
Love your cute little "HOT DOG" watching you cook from the floor. what is its name?
Her name is Luna!! She's one of my kitchen side kicks!! Her mother Percy is usually in there too ❤
I live in the thumb. I used to live at Camelback Terrace 😎
