This delicious dish has New York-inspired name with a Greek culinary heritage. He meets the owner of the oldest family-run Coney Island restaurant in Detroit, American Coney Island. Then it’s off to a family-owned bakery that makes the unique steamer buns for these hearty hot dogs. Finally, Al visits the city’s first vegan coney spot, CMO, for a unique twist on the classic.

I've eaten hundreds of Lafayette coneys starting in high school in 1970. I still love them.
This!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Detroit's Own!
Love that mustard sound Al made in the beginning
Detroit inspired Ohio with the Coney's 🌭🌭 CINCINNATI GOLD STAR , SKYLINE CHILLI, DEXIE CHILLI and many more in my city...😋 Thanks Detroit.
Lafayette fan here... :)
I grew up on Duly's Place Coney Island. That place always gets short shrift but in my opinion, is the best in the city.
More of these vids please! Great to learn about the history behind the food 😍😋
Back in my teen years, I tried American and Lafayette Coney Dogs when I was living in Sterling Heights... I picked American Coney Island as my fave Detroit Coney Dog above Lafayette!
Always American!
You chose.... poorly.
@@redcroft308 how so. Lafayette has no flavor. It’s lifeless meat slopped onto a bun.
@@redcroft308 Nah, I made a _great_ choice; American Coney Island FTW!
@@mynintendogamingfeed5208 is this grace keros's burner account? 🤣
detroit is the freaking man
DETROIT PROUD. Great video!
In the 2000's after I took my mom, dad, and younger brother to a Red Wings game, dad treated us to a late night dinner here. Having Coneys at other places around Metro Detroit, I did not think I would be impressed; however, the quality, taste, and ambiance of ACI was all top notch.
Looks delicious! I'm a Cincinnati Coney fan myself.
You don’t know what you have till you can’t get it no more. Living in SATX and no coney islands, sucks. But when I head back , it’s Dulys for me.
This is one cool lady- we love a good American Dream story 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Tonawanda, ny the #1 Chevy team!!
Mr hotdog in bay city Michigan. Hi its me Tom vogel . You guys are SO GOOD. THE BEST IS MR HOT DOG.WHEN IN MIÇ
I’m from the Suburbs, so I’m a Kerby’s guy. But I get American when I’m down in the city!
I need two coneys with everything & chili cheese fries... throw some onions on them too! There! No ketchup required!
First thing I do when I come home to visit is go to the Coney Island on 8 to get my fix. Tough living away from home for the last 24 years.
The Coney! 👍🏻💯
I’ve had both, American & Lafayette. American is easier to go down, aka the sauce is smoother in taste. Lafayette’s meat sauce is thicker, heartier & has a spice that’s more pronounced and lingers. If you like dark meat chicken on the bone, Lafayette wins. If you like chicken breast, not on the bone, American wins. Both sausages are close in taste, the meat sauce is the difference.
Everyone loves hot dogs
I'm not crazy about them, but craving one now...😅
Who doesn't?
I’m not a fan of plain hotdogs, but coneys are yummy. (I’m from metro Detroit)
I can only eat them with A1 😂
I’m a Michigander and love “chili dogs” aka Coneys. I like ketchup on mine though. I’ve eaten at American Coney a couple times and they are pretty good.
get out
Whenever I go to American Coney Island. 2 coneys and chili cheese fries.
A shalen hot dog from buffalo,NY
(detroit east)
Lafayette Coney is 3 years older
They lie
… and better. My family has been eating there since they opened. The only time I would go to American, was to get chili fries, back before Lafayette sold fries. Before the early 90s, Lafayette only had Better Made chips.
KNOWTEMOSE!!
So, I just Googled the history of the Coney Dog. Sorry, lady. The Coney Dog started in Coney Island, New York. Coney Island is not “just an amusement park”. Your relatives probably came into Ellis Island and passed through Coney Island to pick up a hot dog on their way to Detroit. I am from Detroit so I am not saying this to undercut my home town. Detroit has taken the dog to a new level and definitely perfected the delight. It’s a good chili dog! But, it is not original to Detroit or it would be called the Detroit Dog!
the oldest Coney Island hot dog on the books via wikipedia, (you have to read through the Michigan section) is 1914 via Toderoff's. Coney Island New York served hot dog but not ones topped with Coney sauce which originated in Michigan by Greek imigrants. Sorry I just read that one in Indiana opened in 1914 also so maybe we are all wrong.
I think Coney Sauce has tomatoes in it already, so putting ketchup on a dog like a Coney Dog would be redundant.
Nice special but the sound mixing is terrible. I can barely hear the voices over the background music. Al is especially hard to hear
$4 for a coney island wow
🤟😍
Grace, please marry me!
Where's the CHEESE?
Coney Island dogs go back to 1871 in New York and this is well documented. Therefore, there is no argument Grace; By dent of chronology you lose and are nothing but a copy cat of the original basically, while you claim to have the "real" Coney Island dog, lol.
How can you do a story about coneys, and NOT go to Lafayette? What a joke.
Roker sucks.
Did they get the roaches in check? You could not sit without the roaches greeting you.
QUIT LYING ABOUT ALEX JONES YOUR STATION IS PROPAGANDA
He's a piece of shit and is going down, finally.

We also don’t play about our pizza. We invented deep dish pizza. It’s among the best, especially buddy’s or jets.
Buddy’s is the tops of Detroit Pizza!
jets > buddy's. all day everyday
You're so right! Jets is the best fast food pizza on earth! Only pizza where the crust is the best part!
@@austindillon8908 excuses me? It is NOT fast food pizza!!!!
@material___ but it is, it's not a sit down restaurant, it's your average pizza chain, that's all I meant. I'm not dogging it at all!
Thank you for sharing I love to hear about certain restaurants that spin around for years and still got it going on thank you so much again I say for sharing if I ever be in Detroit I will definitely drop in to try one of those hot dogs chili and mustard the whole work blessing to all of you
Al and crew do a pretty good job. The only thing he didn't hit is the similarity of the menus at all the coney chains.
This makes me want a Coney 😋
Love this series, hope to see more from around the country!
2024 Chicago Portillo's Hot Dogs & Italian Beefs Have 2 Locations in Detroit, Michigan Too. (smile)
Oh this story brings back memories I remembered when I was going to DBI …. Detroit Business Institute when class was over we would stop there and get a couple coney before we catch the bus home 🤭😋 I’m gonna stop by there next time I’m in Detroit 🥰
I definitely want to check out CMO. Never heard of them until watching this and I was really impressed. American Coney has always been my favorite Coney Island, haven’t been in a while though.
This better be good. I hope you invite Walker Scobell again and discuss his friendship with Ryan Reynolds
🇬🇷 🌭 😋
No onions!
Great video about a great restaurant! ❤️
Al is hired!
CMO, Chili Mustard Onions, is a fantastic restaurant and the people are wonderful. I'm so glad you featured them especially because it's not all about meat eaters. Thanks, Al!
I Like Hotdog's With Red Sauce/Tomato Ketchup. 😀👍.
That is against Intergalactic Law!
