YARN TAILS!!! | A Tutorial

- I hope this tutorial is helpful to those who watched it! Make sure that you are in a safe environment (ex: your parents won't hurt you) before you make or buy a tail. As I've said in the past, safety should be your number one priority. That being said, have fun and express yourself! Bye bye! 💛
#therian #theriangear #antizoo #yarntail #tail #furry #furryfandom
Four minutes of straight business. Got to it, told us what to do and how to do it. Was respectful the whole time and, once again, didn't waste any time. Also it was super simple and easy to understand. Great job! :D
Hehe thank you so much! I'm not good at stalling even if I wanted to.
I’m not a furry or anything like that but I DO use A LOT of yarn for my crafts and wanted to add that
1: acrylic yarn is already super soft, but will get EVEN SOFTER if you wash it like you would wash your clothes! You can just stick the entire ball (without the paper) into the washer OR I like to put them inside a pillow case and tie the end shut with a knot or hair tie to keep the yarn from coming out and unraveling! (Most brands of acrylic yarn are both washer and dryer safe, but the paper label around the yarn will tell you for sure so make sure you read that and be safe with your materials!)
And 2: if you need cheap yarn brands- at least for my area- both Red Heart and Big Twist brands are usually less than $3 per yarn ball with tons of color options! I just bought blacklight reactive neon yarn from big twist and I’m pumped to use it! (Maybe I should also try making a tail to hang on my art wall?!?)
Do you need to wash the yarn before working with it or does it not matter if you wash it after making something?
(to make it easier to understand, do I need to wash the yarn upon buying to get it soft? Or, can I just wash it after I make something with it to get the same effects?)
@@2._Double_Trouble_.1 I would say for most projects, washing it before you use it is probably “easier”, but I personally know a BUNCH of people who will wash whole blankets or sweaters after they make them to make them softer. Washing the whole project may not work for this specific kind of project though since the yarn gets brushed out, and washing it after that might make it get matted up unpleasantly. (I hope that makes sense)
@@CraftMom5000 yes it does, thank you!
*starts over cutely*
Same😭 I was working on it then I realised I did something wrong😭
@@1z4ac in my case it was that I was using a method that wasn’t really working 😭😭

OH NO!! Hopefully I don’t 💀 my sisters braiding mine for me right now
lol true
Time to watch this while working on my tail
Same! X3

That’s what it’s for,it’s a tut 😂
Same lol
@@p1nk_4ever they mean that they already know how to make it but they are just watching it for fun
Ahhhh acrylic yarn is DEFINITELY the way to go!!! ITS SO SOFTT
Ikr!
@@WindWardPaws I’m making a new tail with the ACRYLIC YARN and I have reached a dilemma.. I have a white tail tip made rn BUT I’m wondering if I should do the rest black (like I was planning) OR make stripes kinda like a raccoon? What do you think?
Imma prepare some black”tufts” while I wait for your response lol.. my brother walked in while I’m sitting on my bed crafting thing and he thinks it’s a toy for our cat.. 😭
Hmmmm stripes would be cool but black would be better so it'd go with more outfits! I'm thinking all black!
@@WindWardPaws Okay! That’s good because I’ve prepped about 20 groups of 4 strings to make some more tufts!
I love this idea! You can also add a metal wire in the center of the braid to make more posable for curly tails!
Expanding on it as well, if you crochet or knit, you can make a tube shape almost, and tie the wefts to the stitches, making the tail larger. (If that is the look you are going for.)
Definitely a wonderful and great idea, I never thought of before. Thank you for sharing! I hope to see more!
Thanks for the suggestions!!! I love hearing creative ideas :]
Ooh yes I’ll do this I crochet
Do you have more information on crocheting the tube for the tail?
You have no idea how grateful I am for this detailed tutorial. I watched a few tutorials on shorts, but they didn't go into much detail, and the first tail I attempted to make.. well.. it had character..? I hope I'm able to make a better one now, my sister really wants one and I'm looking to make myself one for a cosplay. Tysm!!🐾💕
Glad I could help!!
Yay, I’m starting to enter the therian community, thank you for making this (btw you can be a therian without any gear I just like you wear it)
I finished my tail a couple of hours ago and my brother saw it and said “Ewwww are you a furry?” He won’t talk to me now 😭
Oh no 😢
That's not good, I'm sorry!
@@WindWardPaws It should be okay.. lol
@@WindWardPaws I just made my first successful jumps in quads! Already making progress! My knuckles have seemed to toughen up too, but my shoulders are a bit sore.. I’m having loads of fun though!
Question for you: When/how did you realize you were a therian?
@@ThatOneMusicNerdwithMiranda congrats! Just keep practicing! I think I awakened in November of 2022. I wasn't aware that it was a monumental thing at the time, so I don't know the exact day
@@WindWardPaws That’s cool! Did you start quads right after you awoken? Or did you wait..?
Me watching this to get motivation to finish my yarn tail (I’m using a different method but this method seems so much faster and so much easier to pattern 😭)
Its easier to pattern, but Idk if it's much faster! This tail in the vid took me about 8 hours lol
these tails are BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! I’m so excited to make mine. I’ve been following multiple tail tutorials and this one is the fastest method and definitely what I’m going for. Thank you so much!
agh this is too complicated for me i’ll definitely buy a tail from you when you open an etsy shop though you make excellent tails
this such a wonderful tutorial and I will definitely use it to create one! I think I might make a fox tail or tiger tail as they are both some of my theriotypes, so it would be a great way to express that! Thank you sm for this tutorial!
I made one with no gaps in the strands of fur holy $h!t I have a two gallon buket of fluff from it I did 80%black like 10%red 8%turcoise all mixed together and at the base of it I did like 3-4 rows of rainbow it took me like 2 1/2 days of just working on it as I made it almost as long as my entire leg. Also I found out thin yarn dosent work as well as thick yarn THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m trying to make a tail, but when a moms friend came to my room while I was making it I she said, u know hat it looks like? A unicorn tail, bc it’s colourful!! ( it’s the only yarn coloyii have 😢)
Omg! You have no idea how grateful I am for this vid! I couldn’t understand all the other vids on making tails! But this one I do! I will be using this in the morning for its 1 in the morning, but thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for this tutorial! I just got my yarn yesterday and this really helps with the process! Plus, I love your mask! 💕‼️✨
I've used a different method for mine (attatching tufts then brushing out the whole tail at the end), but this seems so much easier! great tutorial.
I used that method for my first tail and found that the yarn kept coming off when I brushed it, which is why I use this method :]
@@WindWardPawsyeah- i just tried it like that and the yarn kept coming off too so im restarting
Great tutorial! I’m making my own tail with a sort of different method, but this seems fun to do too! I’ll try it out later on. Also, not to sound weird or anything, but I love your voice!
The orange tail u showed was soo pretty *casually snatches
Incredible! I really want to make myself a tail, this video was incredibly helpful
I love your channel. I find your videos really helpful🪵🐾🍃🍄🪶✨
Now I gotta make a red fox tail to match my red fox mask : D
Thanks for the tutor!
I wont be able to start mine until i get some white and orange yarn, but theres some cheap yarn at Walmart that ill be able to get easily! Now I know my next project! At the moment i wrote this comment i am working on a ginger cat mask made entirely from cardboard except for the felt and hot glue
Omg thxx for the tut i will try it soon and update how it went❤
Update 1 tail :
I mad a lynx tail in my summer vacation and i will go public gearing with it here because i am not allowed to public gear in my home town the tail is an 8/10 and the tut really helped❤❤❤
I will do a cat tail next but i dont know if i will brush the fur out because it will take forever but i will update ❤
I'm making my tail now while watching this! I can't wait to finally have a bit of gear :3
This is so helpful I love this tail style! and just have to say i LOVE your mask it's so cute and fits your voice really well!

I have lots of spare yarn and this vid helped me use it in a way I need TYSM
OMGGG ARE YOU MY NEW THERIAN FRIEND!!!!
Haha not really
currently sobbing bc i was like 3 hours into a tail then saw this tut so instead i js used the other tail as a sun bear set bc one of my theriotypes is sunbear :D

Thank you so much, this is really helpful and a lot better than what I was previously doing! Also, I'm making a tail that can double as a wolf tail and a cat tail! I have a mask for a gray cat and I'm working on a wolf mask, so this tail should match both!
Definitely one if the best tail tutorials out there and I love your mask so much!!🍃🐾also Can you do a tutorial on how you did the snout??

I’m making a floor length grey tabby tail! I might have to go back to Joann’s for more yarn though lol
This was such a good tutorial but my yarn was too thick so i need to buy new yarn XD
Thanks! The other tutorials were hard because they were short, this was really usefull!
It took me over the course of a week. I’m doing this so my friend can have a tail for a comic con. They’re going as a Lynx but the mask looks likes a wolf and they wanted the tail long. I did cut it a bit, but I don’t think they’ll really notice.
The day of comic con I’m going is on Sunday and it’s currently 10:31 on Friday….What a week
Where are you going to Comic-con? (Just curious, me and my friends might go too)
It already happened, but it was to the Reno Convention Center
@@sunnygreenwood4126 Cool! I hope you enjoyed it!
also you can use a comb if you don't have a wire brush :)
you and me both have the same color of yarn! ( i was not expecting that >v< ) YIPPIE YIPPIE
Oh my gosh I love your voice❤
Very hopefull! I love how you do it ❤️
Something that may help if you don't like the texture or look: try acrylic yarn!
I am using acrylic yarn in the video
@@WindWardPaws oops sorry lol I just saw a video where they used acrylic yarn and it looked like smth off of Etsy like it was brushed out a lot
Some people use hair straightners to make it less puffy and more fine, but I prefer the fluffier look
thanks so much!! I had a ton of trouble and my first ended up as 15 long strands of yarn :,)
Best tutorial I've found :D
Could you maybe at the end of making the tail, brush the whole thing down with the brush, it makes it less chunky and more flowy
You can but I've always had better results from brushing each individually and then tying them. You can also brush them after tying them for a smoother look!
@@WindWardPaws yeah, but like what you did, you brush them individually and then tie them on, and then after you finish the tail you brush the whole thing down so the big chunks of fluff dont stand out, but dont listen to me u do whatever ♥️ i love your tails
That is so pretty! Thanks for the tut im gonna try it out soon 🖤 Also love your mask!
It's 12am rn I spent 4 hours on the first part and then realized that was only the first part and died inside
Oh nooooo
I forgot to get white yarn, and used some cotton string... It doesn't look pretty currently. Still working on it though. Thanks for the tutorial. :)
I love your hoodie
Yay you liked it!
Help i bought the wrong yard 💀
😢
Yard
THE quickest tail I made took 10 min and I literally just upcycled an old plush from the thrift and made a short length tail
I’ve been trying a different tutorial because my family is anti this is my only chance for full gear (I made a cardboard mask and used socks that I cut for gloves lol) if my alternative tail fails I will go to this tutorial ❤
If you know how to sew, you could ask for a pair of furry leg warmers. You can use one leg warmer and make it into a tail and the other one you could use for makeshift paws or something else!
@@WindWardPaws OH MY WORD THATS SO HELPFUL THANK YOU!!!!!!
I only used the colors black, white, and orange
oooh so excited! first time making a tail and even just having gear! i will update when i finish
Yes thank you! It was fast and simple (my attention span is not good :P )
Your tail is amazing!!!❤ty!! 1+sub

wai- waittt UR MASK IS BEAUTIFUL! if u didnt do a mask tutorial YET can u pleaseeeee make a tutorial on how to make a main coon cat mask? :3 if not i will understand perfectly! reply if u can :) or cant :)

I found the tutorial you were talking about❤❤❤❤❤
My brain broke after 5 seconds hepl 😭
Time to speedrun therian TikTok compilations until I finish this tail
My tail’s tuffs get a ton of furr loss everytime i try to brush through it lol-
Restarting cause i wanted to see if just making four long tuffs would work to make the tail instead but it just keeps falling apart so ehm
Omg I love your mask new sub
I JUST FOUND THIS THANK YOUUU
I just stayed up until 1A.M making my a tail.. I’ve never made one before but I felt like making one so.. I did 🤷♀️ it’s been four hours and now I’m finally going to bed- Tail is a bit less than halfway done
Nice work! Have a good sleep
Also yeah the tails take a long time lol especially if it's your first time making them!
@@WindWardPaws I couldn’t sleep last night.. so I continued until four.. lol
I ran out of yarn before I filled the base string so I guess it’s done..? I wish it was longer though. I think I might go and snatch a bunch of yarn from my kite that I used the same yarn for. I put it on at four this morning (when I had ran out of yarn) and it has a nice wiggle to it! I took a 2 legged stroll down my hallway with it. 10/10! Just gotta get more yarn.. 🫤
thank you soooooo much. i needed this. grabbing yarn rn ♡
guys a tip is to brush it out more to make it more realistic
^^
Thank you for the help. I appreciate this tutorial so much
AWESOME. IM SO GONNA FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL! question, Where did u buy the pet brush??? mine broke 😭😭😭😭😭😭
We had an old one that didn't work for our dogs! You can buy them on Amazon though
@@WindWardPaws Omg i may be sharing s brain cell w/ my dog rn bc i did not think of amazon
im starting to make my second ring tailed lemur tail, black and white stripes, lemur tails are normally long so im making my tail long but not too long
Is there any other brush you can use that makes the same affect? I do not own a pet nor a pet brush.
Any metal toothed brush should work, but the finer the bristles the better
@WindWardPaws uh. Problem. I don't have one of those either- 😭😭😭😭😭
@@WindWardPaws 😭😭😭😭
Oh nooo! You could try a plastic brush but idk how it'd turn out
@@WindWardPawsI’m using a plastic brush and I used the same yarn and color you did and the yarn keeps falling out. It’s probably just because I’m ripping the brush through the yarn lol
May I ask why we need to braid the tail, and how exactly do we tie it? I'm autistic and sometimes need extra info on things if I dont really understand.
Braiding the center of the tail instead of using one single strand or a collection of loose strands provides more stability and a thicker base to tie the tufts onto. If you're talking about tying the braid, use a small piece of yarn to tie the three long pieces that you'll be braiding with together. After braiding, tie the end with another small piece of yarn. This is just how I do it, though, so if you find a way that works better, you can do that too. :]
@@WindWardPaws Thank you
Ok I don’t like therians but idc, some are nice, ima watch even if I’m not gonna do it, I just like watching crafts
I always use saftey pins to clip on my tail and it works just the same
Safety pins work great too! I think I just forgot they existed in this video
How does your yarn brush out so welllllll?! 😭😭
You gotta use the right type of yarn and brush :p
@@WindWardPaws yeah, I don’t really have very brushable yarn 😭
Me trying to find my dogs metal brush:😢😢😢😢😢
I’m gonna try this soon!
This helped me so much! I used your tutorial to make a coyote tail
Nice! I wanna make a coyote tail but I'm intimidated by the color blending
@@WindWardPaws unfortunately my tail got ruined but I’m gonna make a new one. And if you don’t want to color, you can actually buy a lot of yarn that is already blended. That’s what I.
Like they look so good I’ll stick to a already made one cuz I can’t focus so it will end up looking bad
Cool!!! Thank you very much, i'm definely gonna use it
Ok i try it .
Thank you
Im making a wingspan length tail, so wish I could show a photo of the length, I have yet to male my wefts, had to start over cause I spilt a coffee drink on my other one and now im making a long tail
OH ALSO IF YOU TAKE YOUR TAIL LENGTH AND DOUBLE IT YOU CAN FOLD IT OVER TO HAVE A LOOP ALREADY THERE SO THAT THE CARABINER WILL HAVE A LOOP
Oh that's so smart! I've never thought about it like that! I don't think I'll do it just because yarn is expensive though
@@WindWardPaws I have enough yarn currently to do it, it is also nice cause you could make a multi-tail like a 2 tail or more depending on if you add some more looped yarn
Can also only loop one to save yarn
No way it’s 1Am in the morning and I’m making a tail..
Second!!!
I’m confused about tying the tufts onto the string. How many tufts do you do at a time ??? And how do u tie them on?
I tie 4 tufts per row. You use the ends of the smaller string that you tied in the middle of the tuft to tie it onto the base.
THIS IS AWESOME TYSMMMM
How many times are you supposed to fold the tufts over?
Depends on the length!! I show in the video how you want the folded over tufts to be. The more folds = the thicker the tuft
Okay thanks!
Thank you so much for the tutorial!! I made a fluffy tabby tail for me maincoon theriorype ❤
Nice! I'm also a maine coon therian
question, how do you tie them onto the braid so they stay? I haven’t tried making one yet but that’s the only thing that confuses me a little
I do 4 regular knots per tuft. I do the first tuft then on the "opposite" side of the braid, I tie on the other tuft. Then I take the third one and put it between the two, and same with the fourth one. I wanted to include how I did it in the video, but I wasn't able to.
@@WindWardPaws oo okay, do you just tie them on on top of the braid regularly? I wasn’t sure if you were supposed to put the string in between the braid or something
@mariethedove3909 just tie them on regularly, yep :]
@@WindWardPaws alright, thank you! :D
I took a break from making my tail to watch this lol
I just tied pieces of yarn to a braid but didn’t make tufts…so you think that will be okay?
That's how some people do it, but I've found that method takes longer and doesn't brush out as well. But it can give a more uniform look so idk 🤷♂️
how long does it take to brush it, curious cause i try to but i was dying cause it was taking a bit to long and i stop brushing it and i think i use crochet yarn does that work too? Also that racoon tail is beautiful
Each tuft for me takes about 2-4 minutes to brush out. It may take others longer if they aren't used to doing it though. I'm not familiar with "crochet yarn" as I believed all yarn could be used for crocheting, so I'm not sure what you're talking about specifically. Though, there are types of yarn that can't be brushed or are very hard to brush. I find that acrylic yarn that's woven like this works the best.
@WindWardPaws alr also the other day I was using crochet yarn and I didn't know if you had to use a specific yarn so that's why 👍
Im actually making a birman cat tail for my friend
I have the same pet ami pet backpack but it's purple lol
Awesome✨
Can you use any kind of yawn? And can you use a normal brush? Im trying to make my kemonomimi tail but i dont have acrylic yawn or those dog brushes 😞
It really depends on how your yarn is woven. Super fluffy yarns that are commonly used in crocheting won't work. Wool yarn should still work though. People say that fine toothed hair combs work for brushing too.
I'm making a black forest wolf tail
On 2:17 I don’t get it because you had 2 loops but had a tuff and ad like 2 strings like how
I'm not sure what you mean. Perhaps rewatch it a couple of times if you haven't already
