hi brilliant video I'm looking on line there metal strings and nylon which would you recommend, also were can you get the replacement strings from ,what a great sound i started playing a tenor ukulele during lock down i use a clip on tuner can you use the same method or is it by ear .

Hi Pete, I use a clip on Snark tuner or phone app tuner. The old Irisb harpers used metal strings and played with their fingernails, you have to because wire strings are murder on the fingertips. These type of Anglo Saxon lyres were originally strung with horsehair or gut strings. Nowadays nylon, nylgut, or flouro carbon strings are the usual choice, I prefer nylon as they are best when it comes to bass and treble sounds both, plus they are the fattest which makes it easy on the fingers.

I just ordered a lyre and am looking forward to learning how to play it. Do you plan on a lesson on tunning the lyre? I've never played a musical instrument and have never understood how any stringed instrument is tuned. Thanks.

Get a Snark tuner... they're cheap and they work great.

I have another question for you....
So, I did pick up a small, cheap lyre to get started with. The tuning is a bit different, at D4 E4 G4 A4 B4 D5 E5
I thought about trying to tune it to E G A B C D E as you have, but then I wondered (being totally unfamiliar with it) if that is possible, or even advisable, as I am thinking the appropriate tuning is also a function of the strings (total guess on my part)
Also, what does the numeral signify? As in, how does E4 G4 etc relate to a simple E or G?
I have only fiddled around with it a little bit so far, but I like it and am determined to one day order a proper lyre as seen in your videos. Until then I'll practice on this little one and try to follow your videos and any other instructional material I can find (which is, unfortunately, just about non-existant from what I can see).

    Help!
I am glad that I found this video... I would like to get a lyre, but have been hesitant to do so due to the lack of learning resources(that I can find). I did find one nice video series, but it is for a 6-string lyre, and all the lyres I have been looking at (on Amazon, since I have a tight budget) are 7- or 10-string, so I don't think a 6-string tutorial will help much.
Also, the instrument I was looking at (Aklot Lyre Harp, 7- string) is much shorter than the one you are using. Does that make a significant difference? I expect a difference in sound, but I am asking about the actual playing and technique. Also, forgive my ignorance, but they refer to it as a "lyre harp". Is there a difference (aside from size, perhaps) between a lyre and a lyre harp?
Thanks for any advice you can give. Your answers will help determine whether I proceed with a purchase.

Seven string Anglo Saxon lyres with nylon strings are my favorites. Compared to a six string, the seven string is much more versatile and deep sounding, when you want the low sound. The shorter the lyre, the higher the pitch. The one I'm playing in these videos is a good all around sound, friendly to most voices and other instruments. It's tuned E G A B C D E. It plays in E minor, A minor, D major, and G major. I believe the "lyre harps" you mentioned are the small steel strung ones. I prefer the Anglo Saxon ones for the great sound and volume.

@@longhouselyres thank you so much. I would very happily buy through your link if not for current events restricting my budget. I tried looking for stores near me that might sell lyres, in the hopes of paying in installments, but no one is selling them.
I'll try a cheap one for now, I guess, and when able to move up I'll come back to your link.
      Thanks again! Much appreciated!

Craig Williams I am also getting a smaller sized lyre, similar to the one you mention, and for similar reasons. I plan on following the instruction videos presented here. I am impressed with how much music can be made from so few strings! Best of luck in your playing future!

    • @craigwilliams9279
      @craigwilliams9279 4 года назад

@@cathierobson8085 It's actually pretty cool. Once I found some sheet music that was appropriate (it was actually for a recorder, go figure) I was able to start playing some recognizable tunes.
I still plan on upgrading in the future though. The small harp has a pleasant enough sound, but it is very soft/ quiet and I would like both greater volume and a deeper, tone.
      Still, great to learn with.

'Celtic and viking music made easy on the Anglo-Saxon lyre.' >_> I mean viking I get, hwicce and all, the Anglo-Saxons were raiders after all. But Celts were pretty much expunged from the British islands by the time the Anglo-Saxons were established. And we definitely have no idea what their music was like. Probably some Bulgarian accordion shit that those continental types are into.
