My professor in Japanese religion said that one rumor is that Antoku, for various reasons, had a set of copy regalia, while the real regalia was in the hands of the Minamoto and their candidate for emperor, Go-Toba (or enshrined at Atsuta shrine). The copy regalia wasn't considered less that the original, but basically just the same as the real set, with the same mystical powers (all though, I'd argue that this rumor in itself suggests people prefer the original regalia). This rumor basically says that it was the copy of the Kusanagi that sank in the ocean, while the original was in the hands of the new emperor. Still, the rumor admits it's truly unknown whether the current sword is the real one, the old copy, or a new copy.

interesting how the Storm Ruler sword from Dark Souls 3 looks a lot like the heavenly sword of gathering clouds. which makes sense since Dark Souls was made by a japanese studio and the Storm Ruler literally controls wind.
AFAIK the sword, mirror, and jewel still exist, and are kept somewhere (shrine?) by the stewards of the imperial household. The sword originally comes from Demon's Souls where you use it to defeat the Ruler of the Storms, which is coincidentally a name also given to Susanoo.

1. 三種の神器 or Sanshu-no-Jingi are not exactly the same as regalia. They serve more purpose than that because they are 依り代, or the target objects to which the gods are drawn. 2. When Susanoo killed Yamata-no-Orochi, only the point of his sword was broken, or its blade was chipped. The whole sword body was NOT broken off as depicted in this video at 2:10. 3. On his way back from the battle with his Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi sword, Yamato Takeru left his sword at a place, and enshrined at Atsuta Jingu. There is no record of moving this sword afterwards. 4. Therefore the sword with which Emperor Antoku dived into the Dannoura Sea and lost was a copy just like the one the present Emperor has in the Court. 5. Similarly, the original mirror, Yata-no-Kagami, was always enshrined in the Naiku of Ise Jingu since the time of Emperor Suinin. There is no record of moving it. Only the copy was lost. 6. As long as the Japanese record goes, only the Mirror and Sword were inherited according to the oldest record of the religious service, 神祇令. 7. The Susanoo's sword is enshrined as Futsushi Mitama at the oldest Jingu, Isonokami Jingu.

So that’s where tessaiga wind scar comes from, so many cultural/mythical references all over every anime.
Kusanagi...the ultimate grass mower. *sasuke has left my chat with his sword like the duckbutt he is*
3:31 did he shout "HASAKEY!!" When he let out the wind 😂
I thought the thumbnail was the grass sword held on Finn's hand.
"Your ass is grass, and I'm Kusanagi!"
My house is full of kusanagis. They're just regular knives.
Hi, I'm trying to write a novel and I stumbled upon your videos, and it has been a great research material, I'd like to know more about Kusanagi
Him: “Being a powerful kami”
What I hear: “a powerful commi”
That bastard
This is like Casually explained mythology
Ah, so this is the origin of the Master Sword.
I see what you’ve got going on. Smart angle and personable. Rather funny at times. Smart dude 👍
He's figured it out, get im boys!
😂💪
Whatsup my linfamy family
What is uppp!!
What's up Frank!
Watching all of these videos after playing through Okami really makes me appreciate that game
Reminds me of the jade imperial seal and the nine cauldrons of ancient China
Ya, ancient civilizations love their artifacts.
Well, considering traditional Japanese culture is very heavily influenced by Chinese culture, it makes perfect sense.
One of my favorite stories
Bruh you forgot about how it killed an old man, who was using the death god to try to kill the user of the sword
2:17 your choice and commitment not to butcher the pronunciation of the sword has fully sent me😭🤣💀
so at what time sasuke and naruto was involve in this whole kusanagi debacle?
:D
Naruto and Sasuke are fictional characters in a manga/anime
@@dboymax1 thats the joke
@@dboymax1 whoosh pass yo' head
@@cane9965 I knew they were fictional characters, I am not stupid. But how do they connect with the actual legend?
YAAAAS I REMEMBER THIS FROM A COMIC!
have you seen the Usagi yojimbo comics? They do a lot of mythology stuff
I have not, I know of it though :)
The digimon Susanoomon have a sword that can cut anything and can atack with 8 storm dragons.
There is a digimon called susanoomon? I love it! :D
yes: wikimon.net/Susanoomon
Awesome!
Susano-o also appeared in The Persona series. You can get him by fusion. In Persona 3, he was like OP in physical attacks (mostly slash attacks)
There's Orochimon as well, based on the eight-headed snake.
Ah, so that's why Link's master sword is so handy at cutting grass, they were inspired by a true sword of legend XD
So... Any dark souls 3 players recognize it as well?
Yessir
1:26 built a massive fence, with 8 massive barrels of sake.
It’s a good job the old couple is rich and has a lot of man power at their disposal, otherwise they would be screwed.
Moral of the story, be rich and powerful when fighting monsters.
the sword remind me of storm breaker from DS3
Ifkr
Storm breaker is likely a reference to this. It originally appeared in Demon's Souls to defeat the Ruler of the Storms, a name also given to Susanoo.
Ah yes. The leaf blade.
Adventure time related?? Maybe
I was thinking the same thing too.
Metal sword did sink but maybe, just maybe mythical magic sword that come from 8 headed giant serpent ass is exception
Haha! Susanoo screwed up in naming that sword, or "Sword From Giant Snake's Ass" was already taken
Honestly, "sword from giant snakes ass" is describe the sword better than current or previous name. It also more catchy.
Your opponent in a fight would probably laugh at you though :p
1:14 *might guy and rock lee are listening*
Who would win
One youtube folktale dude
Army of naruweebs
The latter probably 🤷♂️
Also some gamers.
In case people were wondering the name of the snake that Susanoo-no-Mikoto killed, its name was Yamata no Orochi.
Yes, that it is :)
