A typically imaginative and careful test, thanks. Your observation of a blur line is not something that I have seen anyone else mention. Meanwhile... you are also the only reviewer who has mentioned (previously) installing the guards with the little dot to the bottom. Others seem to install them incorrectly. What difference does that make?. Presumably it is important else Insta would not have emphasised it in the instructions on the box, which everyone but you seems to ignore...
I'm not sure if there is a difference, but as you said, I imagine there would be as Insta made a point to mention it. Maybe the difference is with regard to how well it seals out dust and moisture rather than a difference in image quality, I'm not sure. I might have to test this and get back to you. I just installed the latest firmware and need to test some other things too, like checking if the blur line is still the same. I'm really happy to see they changed the menu back to X3 style with regard to how long the icons remain on the screen. Wow, they are fast at implementing suggestions.
Thank you for answering my question. I have the X3 and use it when paragliding mostly (sticky guards are a must for this). We do fly in circles a lot to stay in thermals and climb, so later in editing if we keep the frame pointing one direction, the stich line moves and is more prominent and noticeable due to the movement. Another test you may do is to simulate some movements, like rotate the camera along the stick axis but keep the frame looking at a single direction. I guess the difference between x3 and x4 is probably only in software method of stitching, you can test that as well if you like another hint for testing ;)
One of the most useful reviews out there of the x4. Thank you! I’m really curious about the water to air or air to water transition on the stitching and how well the camera handles these situations without and with lens guards. Also with the dive case (in air and transitioning to water). Another thing I’d like to see would be the low light performance with walking and biking or vehicle speeds. Potentially with different lens guards.❤
I haven't tried low light biking, but there's a low light chapter in my full review where I'm walking if that's any help. Low light performance is surprisingly good on this camera.
@@Roos-Reviews thanks mate! I just checked the video. I think as the cameras become stronger, it might be useful to do some faster paced, low light footages as well (biking, driving, jogging). Nevertheless very useful reviews!
Damn your review is very detail and so easy to follow and understand. Wonder if you could make a video on how to handle insta x4 properly while recording 360 without getting interrupted on the stitching line
HI there, great test One thing is missing thou - most of the time stich line is visible when you rotate camera mounted on the selfie stick - then you will see some visible crease on the sky/objects while moving forward or just walking. I've noticed that one on my setup as one of the lenses were a little bit dirtier and there was all to obvious where the stitching happen.
Great Test, thank you! I have also noticed in other videos a noticeable stitching line. But as you showed really well, it is more a kind of blurriness. Definitely better in the X3. The X3 is almost seamless when it comes to stitching lines. The reason in the X4 could be a combination of the bigger distances between the lenses and the unfinished software. I wonder if this could be fixed in an upcoming firmware update?🤔
Thank you for this. It's very helpful. My X4 will be delivered Monday. A practical test (and I am absolutely serious about this) would be for someone to test which lens protectors better protect the lens in a chicken-foot tripod/monopod tip-over onto concrete or asphalt. Not for you to do it, but maybe someone that, for whatever reason, ends up with an extra X4. Or maybe by buying extra lens protectors, then attach them to a block with the same weight as an X4, and drops them (somehow guided) from the correct height. Anyway, again many thanks for what you've done.
Definitely! I have tested 2 x3’s in exactly these scenarios with the sticky lens guards of course - didn’t mean to test them - was a good test of the insta 360 care which was outstanding to be fair! Hopefully won’t need to use it when my x4 arrives!
Does ibsta 360x4 lense can be replaced easier if we crack it? I have the x3 and i hate that i have a small pink crack on it so thinking to upgrade but somehow i hate the lense protection look and wondered if i can replace the glass less easier than opening the blody camera 😅 or maybe the std lense protectior will suffice .
very nice video. Thanks for it as it is very usefull. Just one question, how far does the stitching of an object would start being glitchy more or less? thaks a lot
On the video with you walking towards the camera and pausing directly in front of it. If you look at your hat with the image paused, you can see the naked video has the least alignment issue where your hat falls on the stitching line. Moving to the standard lens guard there is slightly more misalignment on the stitch line - the two halves of your hat done align as well as they do on the naked. Finally on the premium lens guard, the misalignment is at its largest. The right half the hat is way above the left (looking at the image, not your right and left). Now, to see it, I believe you need to pause it. The books are less pronounced, but you can see differences in which letters are impacted by how much, but some of that could simply be the exact positioning as you walked towards the books and its alignment to the stitch line. So, I think for faster moving action, it is going to be more difficult to see, but in some scenarios you may be able to notice a difference. I think the flares and reflects, as well as dust are potentially a bigger deal for most people.
I agree. I use mine for action so the stitch line gets lost in the action but the lens flare and dust can potentially ruin the shot. I only put my standard guards on if I’m pretty sure I’m going to crash. 😂
Liked and Subscribed. I appreciate good quality honest reviews over excitable hype. On my One X (which I still use for photography rather than video) I find the black rubber/silicone lens cap a great accessory. I've seen they make a similar one for the 4X. Do you know if this is designed for no lens guards, standard guards, or premium guards?
A really well controlled test that puts each under the exact same conditions might show significant differences, but with your manual test which is still representative of real world use. Not a problem then! What's a problem is this blurry like at the seam. I've never seen that with my One R and older Insta360 studio versions.
Can you do a sharpness comparison? Also checking for „ghosting“ / reflections when using the premium ones. I noticed that in several videos from other creators. It seems that the lens mirrors itself in the premium glass. Also, can you compare the x4 to the x3? On paper the x4 is better. More solution does not also means better images.
Indeed kinda better quality with the cheaper one. Thanks! Do you still have a x3? Most review point out better quality of the X4. But some report otherwise.
Are the lens protectors the same for both sides, or is there a "Front" and "Back" one? (I think the old sticky ones were side specific")? And whats the minimum focus?
@midhunpg1253 I do not understand your question, sorry. This specific video is about how the lens protectors affect stitching. I did another separate video about how the lens protectors affect the overall look of the video footage, especially with how it affects glare and produces reflections from the glass. Is that the test you are looking for? It is on my channel.

Which stitching option did you use, Dynamic, Optical Flow or AI?
Are those options something you chose from the device it self, or from the editing app (Insta360 Studio)???
Thanks for making this video so I have good understanding of X3 with or without lens guards

so need now the same test between x3 and x4 without protector ;)

I like the wildlife photographer/golf announcer voice-over...
Great job. I was wondering if the lenses made a difference.
Want to see this compared to X3.
Nice video, the blurr line I often see on movement in security cameras using AI. May be related to the algorithm used in both cases.
While all three instances have the blurred band, the premium guards seem to be a little sharper at close ranges.
Im been waiting for this review, thx for the review

Great video thanks for the comparison, do you think it’s worth upgrading from the X3 to the X4?
Yes, I very much do.

Why you didnot discuss about 360 footage
What do you mean?

@Roos-Reviews my dbt is that ,when im using lense protector plastic ,it shows a bubble like ring in the footage
You were asking me why I did not mention that in this video and I have told you that I made an entire separate video about that problem.
Very interesting and helpful! But I don't see the different, I mean the quality the same, so don't need to use premium lens

Interesting collection of books👍
can i connect a Sony WH-CH720N Noise Canceling Wireless Headphones Bluetooth to the insta360 X4?
I don't have those headphones to test, sorry.
Can you use x3 Battery for x4?
No
Currently watching still. Are these lenses waterproof? I wanna keep it on at all times thanks
I don't think they are supposed to be, but I haven't tested yet. I have been told that they aren't.
Thank you
Thanks
Standard lens scratch far to easily.
Without is the best.
All the same 👍
most of the effect is the lens flare, seems no comparison about it as with lens guard will have severe lens flare..
I’ll just use it with no lenses. When I’m not using it I’ll have the lenses on it.
As the book says... 😂
they all look the same no need for premium
You just trigger people with OCD😂
Your forcibly animated husky voice stopped me to follow you inspite of good content.
That's ok. I wish you a happy and healthy life. All the best.
Thank you
