Nice to see Skids finally get his time to shine in this series. Personally, I think the upcoming Legacy Skids looks quite solid, and I hope it's a good figure alongside that upcoming Masterpiece figure too. That, and I hope Powerglide will get his time in the spotlight in the near future
Revenge of the Fallen Skids and Mudflap are kinda like Donald and Douglas from the British tv show Thomas the Tank Engine. By that, well they’re twins and sometimes disagree with each other
That racing driver of that racecar in RID, Auggie Cahnay, was originally a character in the G1 cartoon who appeared in the episode "Trans-European Express", a racer who disliked the idea of the robots (namely Autobots) taking part in a Trans-Europe race, but he softened up a little after teaming up with Bluestreak, Wheeljack and Bumblebee to stop the Decepticons from acquiring a weather-controlling energy device buried under Turkey.
Even RID kinda forgot Skid-z. He(and Tow-Line) were half forgotten after their intro episodes and briefly came back right in the middle of the final battle. I don't remember it was him or Tow-Line but one of them had a 5 second cameo in one of the banned episodes due to 9/11, making them even more forgotten to the American audiences.
At least his elbows will bend, something that always bugged me with the original, given that was pretty much the only kind of articulation Autobot cars _did_ have. :)
Amazing. This is the first time I’ve seen someone talk about ROTF Skids and Mudflap without saying “Michael Bay” a single time. Good on you for that. 👍
I loved him in the MTMTE series, he was awesome. It took me a while to realize he was supposed to be the green aberration. Since his toy is in Legacy, I hope he reappears soon.
For those who don't know the Diaclone car robo version of the toy came with a small motorcycle with fold down handle bars and when the toy was in vechile mode you could open the back door and place the little motorcycle inside.... Just like the real vechile.
@@twistedgaming9185 nice. Hopefully the MP version will have it.. I'm not sure if the real vechile was only sold in Japan or not but over there if you bought 1 of them you actually got the motorbike with it.
Hey, ever noticed that the original car in disclose were like ginormous compared to the little pilots? I understand that was because of limits at the time, but still
I like to think that Skids and Mudflap could be brothers in arms among Cybertron's military as theoretician and vehicle mod engineer respectively in some new continuity...
I don't like sentinel because it killed skids and mudflap and I like the way they are twins in the movie especially when one's father is a twin, he likes it more when he sees a twin in the movie
Man I really need to read MTMTE cause I could've sworn I saw a scan that showed Star Saber killing Skids 🤔🤔. Fantastic vid as always. Would love to see a vid on The Universe War.
So what got me into transformers as a whole was ROTF. I remember as a kid there was a teaser trailer that featured Skids and his toy was one of the first I’d picked up. I built this backstory in my head that he and Mudflap were protectors of other humans like Bumblebee was to Sam. I didn’t picture him as the awful character he ended up being but more a dim witted but hopefully heroic autobot. Of course I was massively dissatisfied with the film version so to me movie Skids will always hold a warm spot as the first time my imagination really took off with the Brand. Shame how he turned out.
the film twins are the example of what happens when you try to hard to make a focus charather. and then drown them in the bay-sauce™. the best part of them, is the duocom mode that happears in the beginning, should have kept that humor, they would have worked
Never realized he was even in any American g1 episodes and never seen the g1 toy when I was a kid and I thought I'd seen them all especially all the characters from the first 2 seasons.I guess it's easy to miss since he was only on screen for a couple of seconds in two episodes and the original figure seemed to be overlooked.
@@HenryLouis21 And yet Que got a toy despite also being the worst Say what you will about Skids, but there's no denying that he had a good toy back then, whether people liked him or not
DId you know that two bots that seemingly resemble the live action skid twins made a cameo in the idw optimus prime series in sideswipe virtual reality when he was about to die.
I don't have much in the way of memories of Skids but he is one of the figures I have been wanting a solid version of since the generations one kinda left me feeling meh. Hopefully the Legacy release makes up for it.
Great video....and great backstory on this Transformer. I did get one of these back in 84 for Christmas. Now of course I will have to get the MP one and the new Legacy figure!!
I think the problem with the live action movies is they add cool characters but change them so drastically so you don't recognize them barely show them long enough to realize who it is or just end up scraping them or making a new bot or something else which generally gives a negative impression sometimes because we hold our classic characters so dear
So as a kid I loved Skids and Mudflap, I had toys of them and genuinely didn’t know it was a racist stereotype. Looking back it was obvious, but for a little kid they just seem like fun silly characters. They still hold a weird, screwed up place in my heart alongside other characters that looking back on them they were either racist or just cringy but as a kid they were fun. I still love the idea of trash talking twins but I just wish they had been handled better. I also will stand by them having one of the coolest scenes in the movie when they fight Devastator just for the fact that they were fighting the coolest designed character other than Megatron in my opinion. I hope they can recapture what childhood me saw in the characters without being offensive in the future.
I myself fully support Thew Adams and his respect towards the character of Skids, and I'm very glad he's getting his chance to shine yet again in both Masterpiece and Legacy. Very happy for good ol' Skids. :)
With apologies to cowgirl Charlene, IDW Skids is simply the best. Smart, funny, courageous and compassionate. One of my favorite moments involves this epic putting in his place of Autobot Megatron... *Megatron:* "Might be populated", you said *might.* If that planet were teeming with *Cybertronians* then yes, there'd be an argument for going back into the breach. But I doubt that's the case. *Skids:* Ah, your *true colours.* I'd forgotten how purple they were. *Megatron:* You've forgotten something else. I am your prisoner. I've been granted conditional bail while we look for the Knights of Cybertron. Where in my bail terms does it say-where *precisely* does it say-that I have to risk my life to save a handful of strangers? *Skids:* (Taps Megatron's Autobot insignia) Right. There. What does that even *mean* to you? How has wearing it forced you to modify your behavior? I'm serious! How has being an Autobot *in any way* prevented you from doing *exactly* what you want? Because if the answer is "it hasn't" then nothing you've said or done in the last six months counts for *anything.*
I have never known anything about Skids aside from hating him in ROTF and that he's supposedly a G1 character that I don't remember ever seeing. But people in my Transformers communities LOVED him and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why. At this point he is my 2nd most hyped Legacy release (second only to Laser Convoy), and aftet this video I finally understand everyone's love for him!
Easy to imagine Budiansky's Skids spending his free time with Tigatron. Ha. Describing movie-Skids as "not very bright". How very diplomatic. If the movie needed to have a set of Autobot twins to provide some comic relief (ignoring the fact that every OTHER character was ALREADY providing comic relief), it would've been great if they had two brainiac Skidses on set. They're super-smart, they know all of this obscure Cybertronian lore, making them actually have a PURPOSE in accompanying Sam in his quest to find the Matrix. If they have to be comically annoying, at least they could be INTELLIGENTLY comically annoying, showing off their know-how, finishing each others' sentences as they deliberate and pontificate... "Hey, those symbols! The language of the primes!" "Primish, I think?" "Primese. Definitely Primese." "A dead language." "Definitely dead." "Unused for centuries." "Beyond even OUR knowledge." "We should remedy that when we get home." "Oh definitely." "How would we learn it?" "Yes. Dead language, not many around to teach it." "Perhaps perusing the archives would be prudent?" "The archives, yes." "Should be fun." "We'll make a day of it." "And if unsuccessful..." "...At least we know where we couldn't learn it." "And we still learned something." "YES! LEARNING!!" 🤜🤛
I received Skids for Christmas 1984. I brought him to school for show and tell in December. My friend Rico Wilks kept telling me he wasn’t a real Transformer. Ah, the memories.
That new Legacy Skids is honestly one of my lost looked forward to figures coming up. Legacy is looking pretty interesting, but for some reason I've. Ren specifically wanting a G1 inspited Generation figure for Skid and honestly for Windcharger who I honestly always kinda thought of as the other forgotten autobot from the early days. This looks like it knocks it out the park so far though! Can't wait.
I pretty much missed Skids as a kid, but when I was on a stopover in Japan, I spotted the reissue collectors series of him in an airport store and grabbed him, making him my first and only import (export?) Transformers figure.
I wish that if they did a comic or series for Transformers Legacy, Skids would team up with the Cybertron Version of Mudflap. Skids: Haven't I seen you before? Mudflap: Not in this life.
Let me preface what I am about to say with this: Back when I first saw the 2007 film, It introduced me to the Transformers brand, and I knew I wanted to collect the line's figures. This would evolve into being an evergrowing collection that I am always looking to expand upon. Now, When I saw the 2009 film, i freaking loved it. But when I got older and wiser, and the movies series was winding down; I took time to watch the Quintilogy, and saw what people didnt like about the films and what they did like. Particularly, the deformed Skids and Mudflap. I had taken a break from collecting figures until my stepfather gave me Generations Offroad, and the spirit was reignited. I now lean more towards G1 figures now, and hope to get my hands on Legacy Skids when that comes out.
I'm sad that you want to forget the movie franchise. But I am not mad about it. I'm glad you like Transformers. Just don't force people like me to love Generation 1 more than the movies.
I'm glad RotF wasn't the last iteration of him. Seeing as how that version of him was my first introduction to the character, I'm glad there are much better more thought out versions of him. I know some people did find the twins funny in the movie. I didn't care so much about the stereotypical portrayal I just didn't find them funny, could barely understand 90% of what they said (probably why I didn't find them funny too) and thought they didn't really contribute much at all to the movie. I mean the ice-cream truck part was pretty funny at the start of the movie but that was about it. I'm quite fascinated by the idea that Skids in the comic almost quit being an Autobot because he wanted to instead learn more about Earth culture instead.
I remember my friends and I thinking he was a mis drawn Ironhide in Triple take over. But yes, I have to admit I love the MTMTE and have posed his toys saving with Nautica
Poor Skids. I barely thought about him during the G1 era. All of his cartoon appearances amount to about 1 minute. He does have an underdog appeal to him. If it were up to me, as an inside joke, in the cartoon, I would ALWAYS have Skids as the first Autobot shot and hurt whenever they fought the Decepticons while a fellow Autobot would yell “SKIDS, NO!!!” After the battles, you would always see him getting repaired by Wheeljack and Ratchet. He would be like Kenny from South Park; Getting hurt in every episode. BUT, in the 1986 Movie, Skids would have his redemption. The underdog SKIDS would be the one to receive the Autobot Matrix Of Leadership; not Hot Rod. The Autobot everyone had doubts about, would then end up as a great leader. Skiddimus Prime. 💪🏼🤖
I wonder when Frenzy and Rumble will get their episode. I’m expecting them to have only one episode for both since that’s an easier way to explain FIRRIB and FIBRIR
By God, I cannot WAIT for that video. FIRRIB, FIBRIR, unite across the battle line in the comments! Okay jokes aside, that’ll be an episode just as awesome as this one.
Original Skids has always been one of my favourites. I very clearly remember reading as a kid the story where he wanted to live with the human woman. I have his Alternators and Binaltech toys, to this day they're some of my favourite TF toys, my absolute favourite from that line anyway. Can't wait for the new MP and Legacy figures. Great video as always!
Great Stuff! The G1 Skids did seem a bit of an outlier, but not more than some other figures, like the kind you could only get from pack-in ordering forms. The live action films definitely seemed to have it in for African American _coded_ Transformers. First with Jazz’s fate (also being the smallest of the cast, even smaller than Bumblebee) and of course the depiction of the twins in the follow up, film. Someone in Hollywood wanted to send a message, an angry one. It was a different time, for sure.
I mean, we can probably put it on Michael Bay and his writers, being in charge of the movie as they were. At least Jazz was a good character in the movie though
I remember on a TFW2005 podcast many years ago, some jackass was insisting that Skids from ROTF was not racist - and the people saying he was racist were in fact the real racists! That’s when I unsubscribed from the podcast.
@@HenryLouis21 People do this all the time, claiming that any time someone sees parallels to a racist stereotype in a fictional character THEY'RE the ones being racist. It's a bad faith argument from people who don't wanna admit that media they like can be racist.
@@CollinBuckman Oh, so I guess black people are racist themselves for calling out racism and problematic stuff that appears in many sorts of media? It's not just white people who have an issue with racism in media. No, they are not racist for calling out racism in popular media. "It's a bad-faith argument from people who don't wanna admit that media they like can be racist." how is it bad faith to call out that something in a form of media is rooted in racism or not? It's not bad faith when you see a character being portrayed stereotypically and calling it out for being rooted in racism. liked the twins, They had really nice toys and made in the best movie toyline of all movies ROTF
Yeah you would
@@THGMR-ox7sd gee thanks Captain obvious
Same here
Not a big fan of them in the movies but damn i love their toys to death
I think I know how they could return and be improved as characters.
I've been wondering when you'd get around to one of the twins from ROTF. Now, is like to see a basics episode on Rumble and Frenzy.
I can't wait to get legacy skids lmao
Legacy skids is pretty good, although there are a bunch of gaps in the legs
@Screaming Soldier true
At least his elbows will bend, something that always bugged me with the original, given that was pretty much the only kind of articulation Autobot cars _did_ have. :)
Same!
@@bladen6177 Gaps in figures never bother me.
Amazing. This is the first time I’ve seen someone talk about ROTF Skids and Mudflap without saying “Michael Bay” a single time. Good on you for that. 👍
I never get tired of the old Japanese Diaclone commercials.
dia...
...*CLOOOONE*
I loved him in the MTMTE series, he was awesome. It took me a while to realize he was supposed to be the green aberration. Since his toy is in Legacy, I hope he reappears soon.
My only memories of the character are the ROTF version, and ironically like IDW Skids this is a traumatic memory I wish could be forgotten.
I can’t help but read “Skid-Z” as “Skid Zee”, as I didn’t watch RID when it first came out :/
6:53 never felt so called out
XD
G1 Skids: I am a thinker and not a fighter.
ROTF Skids: We don’t do much readin.
F***ing Bay.
For those who don't know the Diaclone car robo version of the toy came with a small motorcycle with fold down handle bars and when the toy was in vechile mode you could open the back door and place the little motorcycle inside.... Just like the real vechile.
While the bike was dropped for Skids, it was restored for Crosscut, acting as a backup memory drone.
@@twistedgaming9185 nice. Hopefully the MP version will have it.. I'm not sure if the real vechile was only sold in Japan or not but over there if you bought 1 of them you actually got the motorbike with it.
It's also a tribute to the IRL Honda City, those bikes were really useful for japanese streets
@@yi_hou3092 very much so.. That's why the original toy had the bike with it in the first place.
Hey, ever noticed that the original car in disclose were like ginormous compared to the little pilots? I understand that was because of limits at the time, but still
as a kid, ROTF Skids was and Mudflap were my favorite in my heart
people didn't like them i love them so much they added humor to the movie
I like to think that Skids and Mudflap could be brothers in arms among Cybertron's military as theoretician and vehicle mod engineer respectively in some new continuity...
I knew I had heard the name Skid but was not able to figure out where I had heard it, till you mentioned the movie. And honestly I loved the twins.
I loved the ice cream truck form for them I’m so glad I got it all those years ago
Sentinel: Do you have the pillars?
Skids: We got it, sir.
Sentinel: Good, that's one loose end,
I don't like sentinel because it killed skids and mudflap and I like the way they are twins in the movie especially when one's father is a twin, he likes it more when he sees a twin in the movie
Man I really need to read MTMTE cause I could've sworn I saw a scan that showed Star Saber killing Skids 🤔🤔. Fantastic vid as always. Would love to see a vid on The Universe War.
He just gave him a good stabbin', he got better!
Poor Skids 😭 My favourite theoretician. He was one of my favourites in MTMTE
its a crime that Hasbro isn't one of your supporters. You do so much for this brand and community
Facts thats what he should of been like
@@Retro_wave15 Yeah.
the film twins are the example of what happens when you try to hard to make a focus charather. and then drown them in the bay-sauce™.
the best part of them, is the duocom mode that happears in the beginning, should have kept that humor, they would have worked
I like how they referenced g1 in robots in disguise with auggie cahnay one of the race drivers in the g1 episode “trans-Europe express”
I never heard someone who's traumatized so hard that their soul explodes literally.
Watching your friends melting alive will do thay to you.
A shame that Skids's reputation in ROTF resulted in him not being in the Studio Series line
I mean... good? Thank god we are not getting a studio series figure of the twins because they were the worst.
@@HenryLouis21 And yet Que got a toy despite also being the worst
Say what you will about Skids, but there's no denying that he had a good toy back then, whether people liked him or not
Why did the fanbase collectively decide to give IDW Skids a Scottish accent?
DId you know that two bots that seemingly resemble the live action skid twins made a cameo in the idw optimus prime series in sideswipe virtual reality when he was about to die.
it was in optimus prime #9
Actually No. No I didn't.
I don't have much in the way of memories of Skids but he is one of the figures I have been wanting a solid version of since the generations one kinda left me feeling meh. Hopefully the Legacy release makes up for it.
Just got the Legacy one yesterday and love him!
Great video....and great backstory on this Transformer. I did get one of these back in 84 for Christmas. Now of course I will have to get the MP one and the new Legacy figure!!
Skids: the most well-known obscure transformers character.
Hasbro has officially stated that skids and mud flap are back on the table to get toys in studio series
I honestly enjoyed rotf skids and mudflap purely because they were decent comedic relief lol
I totally agree with you, they were brought to the movie for humor, they were participating in the movie.
I really liked Skid-Z, it was a shame he was in only one episode of Robots in Disguise.
I myself fully support Thew Adams and his respect towards the character of Skids, and I'm very glad he's getting his chance to shine yet again in both Masterpiece and Legacy. Very happy for good ol' Skids. :)
Honestly, I would like to see SS Skids and Mudflap to complete the cast
So obscure he wasn’t even off lined by a cosmically powered starscream
Wow, someone actually verbally bitch slapping Megatron and putting him in his place? That's actually pretty cool.
Epic.
I grew up with the RotF Skids, and I found the idea of him being wannabe gangster twins with mudflap interesting.
the twins are great characters i love it so much they add fun to the movie i think i'm a real gangster style guy
On another note I just remembered where I heard the name Auggie Cahnay before, he was a one off character from the G1 series, still a racecar driver..
I preordered the MP Skids a while back and I can't be more excited to get it
Is it as expensive as the likes of Megs Or Optimus in the line?
@@cyberprime9355 No, he, Crosscut, and Reboost are all a reasonable $90
@@swerveofhelex3717 Understood. I was a little worried considering the usually VERY expensive pricing for those figures.
I’ve always loved Skids since I had his old 1984 toy thanks to my dad. And honestly I’m just glad someone finally remembered him again. Thanks Chris.
The language of the primes!"
"Primish, I think?"
"Primese. Definitely Primese."
"A dead language."
"Definitely dead."
"Unused for centuries."
"Beyond even OUR knowledge."
"We should remedy that when we get home."
"Oh definitely."
"How would we learn it?"
"Yes. Dead language, not many around to teach it."
"Perhaps perusing the archives would be prudent?"
"The archives, yes."
"Should be fun."
"We'll make a day of it."
"And if unsuccessful..."
"...At least we know where we couldn't learn it."
"And we still learned something."
"YES! LEARNING!!"
🤜🤛
His death in MTMTE remains one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the entire franchise
Now we need a mudflat vid because the cybertron version was probably one of the more memorable characters there.
5:53 this also didn't help by the fact that Skids was voiced by Tom Kenny a white actor
I love how Skids having his memories reawakened literally scared him to death.
I received Skids for Christmas 1984. I brought him to school for show and tell in December. My friend Rico Wilks kept telling me he wasn’t a real Transformer. Ah, the memories.
Imagine his reaction now.
Mudflap: Not in this life.
it would be great anyway i like them in the movie
This video "Skid" right into my recommended videos list
"The original forgotten Autobot".
The Forgottobot, if you will.
Ah, letting out your inner Thew Adams, I see!
@@silhouettoofaman2935 In honor of Thew's main man Skids, I must!
I dream-casting either David Tennant or Sylvester McCoy as the voice of Skids, since he's a learned time traveler with a Scottish accent.😉
I remember my friends and I thinking he was a mis drawn Ironhide in Triple take over. But yes, I have to admit I love the MTMTE and have posed his toys saving with Nautica
Ahhh, you went to Grindcore. Poor Skids 😢
Once again it’s up to IDW publishing to take a mildly obscure character and make them something great.
Obscure character: (exists)
IDW: "Don't mind if I do." (Turns them into fan favorites)
I just watched "Triple Takeover" in the G1 animated series and there wasn't a ton of Skids, but he was definitely in there as a supporting character.

5:05 you may have removed the audio from this cursed scene, but I can still hear it.
Movie skids was one of my favorite autobots in it
Great Stuff!
Wait, I'm confused, how are the people who say that Skids and Mudflap in ROTF the REAL racists here? Is there something that I'm missing out on?
@@HenryLouis21 It was not a very convincing argument.
It's not bad faith when you see a character being portrayed stereotypically and calling it out for being rooted in racism.
"don't wanna admit that media they like can be racist." that's not a good excuse to be okay when a form of media is being racist or portrays a character who is rooted in stereotypes.

I think in many ways Inferno has become the most obscure of the Autobot cars. He has a few appearances in the G1 cartoon and in Marvel UK Earthforce stories. but he made shockingly few appearances in IDW comics for a 1985 toy.
