    Squishy is probably the most mechanically influential player ever to touch the game. He literally popularized (in pro play) ceiling shots, flip resets, Squishy saves, and air dribble bumps. Zen is clearly the best right now, but he certainly hasn’t implemented four game changing meta mechanics. I’m not saying he won’t, but to compare Zen right now to what Squishy has done just isn’t fair.
    Edit: Well, after seeing Zen win worlds and just utterly dominate the best of the best for months, it seems like he will change the game just like Squishy did. The kid is nuts.

    • @connorallan8080
      @connorallan8080 Год назад +37

      He is bringing alot more psycho touches. And getting resets off a heavy touch to the ceiling. All done occasionally but he is showing how important it is and alot of pros are starting to implement it more.
      Not taking away from what you saying tho. Squishy's new mechs were like brand new whereas zen is popularizing variations.

    One: He not only was rhe driver behind the offensive meta still prevalent today.
    With that, he also changed the defensive meta, how aggressive defenders challenge, and how players defend in general.
    He's also arguably one of the most influential, beloved players of all time. Last season, World's? Squishy during roster introductions still got aome of the largest crowd pops of any player.

    Honestly I don't think the raw mechanics have changed that noticeably except for wall reads becoming way more common. The biggest change for me is the speed that all of the pros now are able to do the mechanics. It's like you mentioned, defenders are faster and the game as a whole is faster so pros have to be able to do those same 2018 mechanics at 10x the speed today.

  • @ashtonproverbsold
    @ashtonproverbsold Год назад +1

    I've got a take about this situation.
    They're both incredible players for completely different reasons. 5 years ago when Rocket League was still in its early days, Squishy was out there hitting clips that defined him as a simply good player. He mastered the essentials (ball control, ariels, car control etc.) and used them to create shots that didn't amaze the community because of their complexity, rather by his ability to pull them seemingly out of thin air with unbelievable consistency. It's been 5 years since those days, and in that time the game has changed. Since defense has become so good in recent times, players are now required to be creative with their shots, removing their opponents' ability to predict their moves. This is where Zen comes in. His sheer ability to act spontaneously and confuse the defenders is what makes him the player of this era, not his ability to be simple and perfect with the essentials. Overall, I believe that Zen is easily the strongest player of the current Rocket League era, yet Squishy was more game-changing.
    That's just what I think.

      Squishy improved mechanics and strategy while I feel zen is showing how good improved team chemistry is with high end mechanics. imo squishy is more influential then zen but current vitality showing how good chemistry and crazy mechs are (as seen with mainly zen and alpha) is more influential then nrg at there peak

  • @nicklikethesoup
    @nicklikethesoup Год назад +1

    It's not necessarily that it's crazy that it's still evolving. If you look soccer itself, the tactical and mechanical evolution is crazy. And it's accelerating. Rocket League mirroring that despite being more simplistic (3v3 instead of 11v11) goes to show how complex it can become because in order to be the best, you have to develop the skills of the best and then build upon them to develop something else, something new. The programmers could do nothing to develop the game further except aesthetic tweaks and this evolution would continue.

    Fast forward to Zen, his palystyle really showed me the blindspots I needed to work on in order to become a lot more consistent in my own playstyle. I still have a long way to go, but I finally feel like I'm coming out of elo hell thanks to watching Zen. I wish he had his own RUclips channel tbh.

    Good video, I think the one thing that wasn't mentioned here was the clear difference in speed as well. I remember hearing that NRG was one of the first teams to heavily abuse custom controller sensitivities and deadzones, so honestly he wasn't that good for what he was doing, he just was more mediatized because he had less competition at his level at the time. It's like how many singers got famous in the 60s simply because there was less competition on the radio and no spotify or youtube to self produce. The older players squishy, jstn, kaydop, deevo, kuxir, scrub, ect revolutionized the game so that others players had easier paths to greatness. The less the player base will be able to appreciate what’s going on. Squishy had mechanics that are now a staple in RL gameplay and while they are difficult. They are understandable even to new players. It’s hard to see Zen clips and truly understand what’s happening unless you watch RL all the time. Yeah, the introduction of TAS to RL has shown we are nowhere near the technical skill ceiling of this game yet, not even close. Eventually someone will come along with an even higher mech ceiling and we'll be right back to this same conversation lol.

    I think the skill is pretty matched for the times obviously players have to be better now because people over time have adapted from 2018 and so you have to be better and more creative with ur shots or else u cant score at this level of play

    The difference between Squishy and Zen is Zen has amazing mechs BUT Squishy is the person that basically brought most of these mechs into the Rocket League scene such as flip resets and ceiling. My point is it’s easier to learn mechs and pull them off when there are tutorials that show you how to pull off these mechs but when you have to go from almost scratch to learn these it’s harder
