From Zero Paints Application Guide: "What are Zero Paints? : Zero Paints colors are known as Basecoat Paint as they
require a clear coat to give them a gloss finish." and "
All Zero Paints dry matt and requires clear coating unless otherwise specified" so... it's normal to apply a clear coat in order to obtain a gloss finish.

Great Video! Thanks a lot for doing the comparison! The only comment and correction about Gravity Colors paints is that the bottles contain 35ml / 1.2 fl. oz. paint not 30ml as mentioned in the video.

A great job, Carey, especially if this is your first effort to put up a review video. And I know whereof I speak, having retired from a career of making instructional video at the university level.
You had good pre-production planning by not having things scattered about, but ready to go on camera. Your lighting and camera angles were good and clear. Your audio was clear. You had a stated goal at the beginning and a conclusion at the end. Can't do much better than that for a start.
I hope you do more videos of such high quality. Way to go!

Wow very kind words. It was my first video. I Did pre plan and had a goal. I have watched many videos, and tried to take some cues from others that have done very nice videos. I did find out however in the process of making this video it is a lot of work and take some time the whole video took me about a week to complete. I plan my future videos to be a little bit shorter.

I have just come across this excellent video. I agree with some of your other contributors that zero paint can be more problematic. My issue was with Lotus black, zero white and MP4 did not give me any of the same problems. I will try some Gravity. I hope you are well and will get back in front of the camera some time soon. Best wishes.

im not one to comment on reviews, but after watching this in its entirety, i will say youve done a very thorough review. Had i not recently used Gravity paints for the first time, i would be inclined to try based on this video. im not one to cheap out on materials. i dont mind waiting for a bottle of mr super clear III for 12$ from japan.
That being said i agree with 98% of the Gravity paints portion. the 2% lays in how much color i had to lay down to achieve good coverage, and really i only used 3 coats and felt i may have done too much at that point. but this could be simply the difference in the color we used. im a firm believer in less is more when it comes to paint. And this was my sold point completely. the smooth surface shocked me.
the clear is absolutely amazing. its first dust coat is basic, but its following wet coats is almost full proof. it definitely self levels very well, and orange peel effects were simply none existant.
to further note from my experience, the clear coat is rock hard in 24 hours. wet sands very well for a cut, and i even buffed it with a dremel with polishing wheel.
I say well done on the review.

I've used Zero Paints for a long time...and have never gotten orange peel that bad...I think you are not waiting long enough between coats with the Zeros. I usually wait 5-10 minutes between color coats. Also I shoot color with a .4 HS Silverline and a higher pressure (20-24 PSI).

    • @stephenbunte5873
      @stephenbunte5873 6 лет назад +1

      I agree, 5 - 10 minutes between color coats and 20-32 PSI.
Idaho Scale Modeler - Thanks for the video. At 26:35 the spoon looked like it already had orange peel. Could be the quality of the camera, meh.

I have been thinking to use zero paint and my first color is going to be highland green cuz I have been thinking to do the bullitt mustang and I was wondering have you ever thinn the paint of zero paint before you spray it or is it all ready thin and also does it matter what primer you used before painting?

  • @leonarddecant8566
    @leonarddecant8566 7 лет назад

I have used Zero paints for quite some time. I really enjoy them in that they spray beautifully. If you leave ample to me between coats of at least 10 to 15 minutes you should get good coverage in a MAX of three coats. Pressure is 18 to 20 psi at the regulator. I never go for a wet coat with the base coat as it will be satin in the end anyway. Doing so has resulted in excellent coverage with no orange peel.

Thanks for the vid! That sure looked like solvent pop on the Zero Paints. I just ordered my first batch, and their application guide says not to do wet coats of the basecoat.
Basecoat: Depending on the colour to be applied you will need to apply about 2-4
coats. Yellows and similar light colours may take more coats than black and darker
colours, each coat will dry within a 5 - 10 minutes depending upon room temperature
(we recommend spraying at 18 - 21 dg C). DO NOT apply Wet Coats as you are just
looking for a nice even colour coverage. The paint will dry MATT (this is normal). The
final coat should be applied in a criss-cross fashion to allow an even consistency of
the metallic or pearl particles. If you find any blemishes in your paint finish, use your
abrasives to correct and apply more colour. We recommend leaving overnight before
clear coating to be sure and metallic particles have cross linked (or they could move
about when the clear is applied).

Great tutorial, one point your mentioned using the three part Zero clear, so you were comparing ready for use conventional Gravity clear with a more advanced two component clear with thinner from Zero. I was surprised that you had problems with both the black and the red from Zero, I have had no such issues and have used the Zero ready mixed clear.
However, from your demo you did highlight how the advanced two component Zero clear filled in the unfortunate first finish. Personally I believe you may have a batch issue with the Zero paint and fir your interest now there is an all new Zero two component clear called 'Diamond clear' that far out performs any other model paint out there. Maybe you need to give that combination a try and see what you think. Please keep up the quality product reviews, they are always very well received and commented on in the model building community.

Excellent video, thank you. It looks, to me, that the problem is the Zero primer, not the paint, I had that finish before and it's when the paint crease the plastic spoon, if it was the zero paint, sanding would have take care of it, I think that the problem is the thinner they use. The solvent went through the primer and melted the plastic, it would have been interesting to try Zero paint on Gravity primer. I will go with Gravity anyway as zero Gulf colors are back-ordered... I will try on Tamiya thin white primer, I used it with lacquers before with success.

Great job first of all! As far as U showing favoritism towards one paint I didn't see it. All U did was comment EXACTLY AS U SAW IT!!! Then U even went as far to say it may have been a bad batch... so I didn't see any issues with this at all. And if U did show any favoritism (I kind of wish U had) SO FRICKING WHAT....it's your Chan & I want your opinion. I've watched 100's if not 1000's of hours worth of RUclips Inst videos like these & followed several of these guys that swear by a product only to change their minds later...
Again great job on the video, unlike many/most product reviews on here few actually were as thorough as you were. Not to mention this was your FIRST ONE!!! 😳👍👍👍.......✌️LEBIII

ISM, when you got to the polishing stage, did you use all three Tamiya polishes to yield the final finish?? The 2 part automotive clear that I currently use, when fully cured lays down so smoothly that it requires no wet sanding. All that it requires is a follow up polish using Tamiya Fine and Finish. If I can get the same results with Gravity/Zero I would like to give either of them a try.

I work with both brands, but not with their primers. To me, they're equivalent : ZP has 60ml bottles where 30ml are needed for a 1/24 model, Gravity has 35ml bottles where one half is needed for the same job. Gravity is a bit cheaper, less expensive I should say. I don't know their varnishes. One last word, I never got this "orange peeling" with ZP or gravity colors.

Gravity Paint is horrible to deal with. The first time I ordered I waited over a month then contacted them and they shipped the paint. Second time I ordered I had to go to Paypal and have them refund me for my order and then I refused shipment when it arrived and I believe the only reason I received the paint is becasue PayPal opened a dispute with Gravity.
The one time I used their paint I was very impressed but it's not worth the hassle. I just ordered some Zero Paint from Hobbyworld and hope to have the paint in 5 days.

I must say that every time that I have ordered paints from Gravity Colors, I have to wait a very long time before I receive it! My recent order that I made back in February of this year, I never receive at all and this is a major source of frustration for me. It is shameful that Gravity Colors has elected to treat me this way especially considering the fact that I have money in my pocket to buy their product. All this being said, I have decided that Gravity Colors no longer exists and will get my paints from other companies like Zero Paints which by the way when I order product from them, I receive it the following week.

I just found this video it's pretty interesting to me because I have just had some less than complementary things to say about zero in some of my own. It's hard to see the detail in your video but I strongly suspect that what you were calling orange peel is actually crazed plastic texture. Zero is very hot. Way too hot. myself and a number of other people have discovered this the hard way. I don't see anything on their bottles about not spraying wet coats but they do say so on their website. My position is that is an insufficient way to inform the consumer.

will pattison I respect your opinion you know I do will. however I feel I did the best I could of showing the to paint side by side using them exactly the same. I have painted two models with zero paints and did not have the same effect I got on the demonstration. I still feel your pain or very good having said that I believe they take a little bit more care and how they are applied. if you look back on my Facebook timeline to the pictures I posted of the Honda F1 car which I used the racing white zero paints they turned out flawlessly. I am open to any suggestions you might have on how to better use than zero paints. thanks again for your remarks.

will pattison P.S. You did not express what you have Against Gravity colors. I want you and everyone else to know and that reads this that I am not partial to either one of the paints. had the gravity colors given me the same problems that the zero paints did on the demonstration I would have been just as critical to them. if you listen to carefully to the end of the video I did state that everyone should try both pants for themselves. I value any direction that you may have to create better results using zero paints. once again I have used 0 Paints in the past without any issues whatsoever.

You need to be wearing a respirator when painting, lacquer paints and especially 2k clears have carcenigens in them. Voice over the painting if you need to talk them. Nice video but it would be better in a shorter format around 15 minutes.

  • @fetthunderdome

I don't get the trouble you are referring to. If you have to gloss it anyway, why worring about the orange peel if 2k is going to fix it? The zero paints are supposed to work this way, that's clearly mentioned on their site too. So why doing all the sending b the base coat? Besides that, please use gloves and respirator mask, because a 2k paint is toxic as it generates isocyanates when components get mixed. Seriously toxic, not like lacquer paints.
