  • How fast do the Chiltern Class 68 locomotive hauled trains accelerate? Here we sample 68012 at the head of a London Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street express train starting from its booked station stop at Banbury. The line speed here is 90mph, but for some reason the '68' seemed to run around 4 to 5 mph below the line speed limit. The gradients from Banbury are uphill at between 1 in 300 and 1 in 400, though after around three and a quarter miles this steepens to 1 in 179. The Class 68 Caterpillar C-175-16 Diesel engine is rated at 3800 hp (2,800kW) with four 600hp electric traction motors capable of putting down 2,400hp at the rail. The throbbing sound of this Diesel engine makes it a favourite with diesel locomotive enthusiasts, and this is captured particularly as the loco passes underneath over bridges and tunnels. This particular train seemed to start with an increase in power but a slow releasing brake - therefore the 0-60mph figure of around 2 minutes was quite disappointing. The Garmin's onboard GPS was not producing accurate figures for the first part of the video. I may consider overlaying the speed data captured with a more professional device later on - subject to demand. Enjoy.

    Almost correct regarding the power, it's 4 x 600kw
That is just over 3200 rail power
    Good video
