I used to love crashbox, and honestly still do for nostalgia reason! The skeleton guy never really scared me but he always hurt my feelings as a child lmao
For people who never watch the show, he's a snarky mean pirate archetype and would basically insult your intelligence if you couldn't figure out the answers. And as a kid who was bad at math/puzzles, being called a "finger counting moron" hit very personally
Edit: Thanks for all the likes and replies, you guys are awesome

generally most segments from the show were really interesting and extremely well done, like the artist’s sketch? segments (i don’t remember the exact name), and the radio show segments. honestly looking back the only part of it that felt genuinely freaky though was the revolting slob, especially as a kid it was scary 😭

If memory serves me right, the writers of Candle Cove cited Crashbox as one of their main inspirations for the creepypasta. Considering the fact that Crashbox is relatively obscure outside of the people who watched it when they were young as the show recieved no home media releases, it's a fair assumption that Crashbox's obscurity contributed to the writing of Candle Cove.
Also, the creators of Popee the Performer were told to just make a show, they were never told that the show would be for kids. Also, the show almost ran over budget, and the creators paid a friend who worked as a game developer around a hundred dollars to model the frog character in the show. Not really creepy, but a neat little fact nonetheless :)

    • @mothman6378

  • @Peppmintleaf

Fun Fact: Poppy the Performer at one point had OFFICIAL merch. Such Merchandise included you typical figures, plushes as well as more unique items such as a lighter, a crystal stature and a toaster. There's also supposedly a manga that was based on the anime or the other way around. (I honestly want to get my hand on it)

    • @MROB-6720M
      @MROB-6720M 2 года назад +8

Since all the characters( Popee, Mr. Stain, Crescent, etc,) that were made by Ryuji Masuda(the creator) are owned by the station that aired them, he has to change their names. The manga is called Chinchikurin btw :)

Japanese kid shows have more wiggle room to do disturbing shit compared to American shows. They're allowed to show things like guns, alcohol, blood, and minor swearing; which are usually censored during localization (and example being Digimon's dub cutting out Nanimon's alcoholism and the Dratini/Safari Zone episode of Pokemon never being dubbed). But Popee is still an oddball because the show appears to be for young children, where as shows like Digimon or Pokemon are for the 10-13 demographic.

YES, Crashbox getting attention! Man, I really wanna make a game in the style of that rusty stop-motion factory hub one day. The level of style in that show was immaculate.
I wasn't scared by anybody in the show because I thought they all looked "cool" in a spooky way, but on the other hand I had frequent nightmares of the Revolting Slob holding my mom over a pool of lava and using a control panel to lower her. Kinda like Oogie Boogie does with Santa and Sally, but with rope instead. I still adored the show, though, and it's inspired tons of my art since then.
Man, I wish that shows nowadays weren't afraid of being that same sort of level of "uncanny" that Crashbox was. Shows for kids especially, foster their curiosity for weirdness!

I love Crashbox! For a second there, I thought I would be traumatized by the show, but thankfully, it didn't give my siblings and I any nightmares at all; a rare example in fact. Had a history of watching this show as a kid, thought the robots were adorable even to this day, and kept revisiting Crashbox when staying at a motel for the night. I easily understand the Uncanny Valley in certain segments, but it felt like something out of the Spy Kids universe(yes, really...), so whimsical yet disturbing!
I'm really sorry that everyone had to deal with horrific dreams due to the *trauma* caused by just a few educational skits every now and then. But we'll always have fun in our adult years returning to this fateful *childhood* endured once maturing. Who knows if there will be some abysmal creepypastas based on Crashbox, but that's how things go for nostalgia.

Honestly, the episode of The Haunting Hour that scared me the most was the episode with Debbie Ryan- the one where she plays a popular mean girl bully and bullies a goth girl who, unbeknownst to her, comes from a family of witches/wicans/some type of magic. The episode ends with Debbie's character being trapped inside of an app or a text message in the goth girl's phone, and is then promptly /deleted from reality itself./
Something about that has always terrified me, and still does to this day.

I remember watching crashbox in an old hotel. It was the only channel in that room, but it wasn't on in any other rooms, I had a big family so we had t rent two rooms. Every once in a while I think about it, but it feels more like a fever dream.

I’m from Newcastle! NBN used to play a ‘good night from Big dog’ every week day, and that’s when you knew it was bed time as a kid.
Didn’t think it was creepy as a kid, but looking back it’s absolutely frightening haha

The episode “Spores” off of RL Stine’s Haunting Hour still scares me to this day. It’s terrifying. It’s one of the harder episodes to find on the internet, but it’s available to watch on Soap2day. One of the scariest episodes from that show for sure.

I wish someone would investigate similar stuff airing in the early 90s in Italy, Switzerland and France...especially France. I'm Italian and I used to live near the Swiss border and since we had sat at home I could watch more or less all the biggest channels. I remember going to French channels and watch the weirdest creepiest kids show ever.

I found Popee the Performer (season 1) when I was 11-12 and I honestly loved how weird it was, although I never got to the other seasons, nor the darkside episode, but seeing as I'm a bit older, I still love the weird atmosphere it has, and I would love to continue watching it later

Crashbox was that one obscure show I thought only I watched as a kid, to be honest. Every week I'd tune into this bizarre steampunk world of absurd scenarios and be invested in the weirdly satisfying animations every time. It was never scary in my eyes, but it definitely desensitized me to horror.

*You should talk about Snleckio. It’s a Czech kids’ shoe from the early 80s to early 90s. Like, Crashbox, it has educational segments, but the main character is a 7 feet tall puppet named Ratafak Plachta. There are episodes on RUclips of this show, but it’s all in Czech. I did find one with English subtitles, but I do understand some Czech. A lot of people are terrified of Ratafak, but he is just a goofy, weird looking sweetheart.*
