I would bet that the fan stopped working but the heating element continued to heat. This caused the back to get too hot and therefore the black sound insultation also got hot and slid down the plastic cover. Overall a silly design IMO.

I'm doing 10 years Appliance technicians and this unit Terrible design and all the time issues. Not recommending.
They need to change their design I agree
