- Dryer troubleshooting, the top 10 problems that happen with dryers. This is sort of a crash course on dryer problems, what the different problems look like, and what it takes to fix them. This list was compiled from my own dryer calls and the calls covered all kind of drying machines. Various brands, old, new, gas, electric, stackable, laundry center, etc. I go over about 50 different issues that one can run into with a dryer. Dryer not spinning, dryer machine not starting, not heating, not drying at all, making noise, smells bad, etc. That's it for the summary! Hope you enjoy the video.

This is sooo helpful. So many other videos focus on HOW to replace x, y, or z. But my question is usually WHAT needs to be fixed? And this answers that perfectly!
I appreciated all the knowledge you generously provided! As a new home owner, there’s a lot I don’t know about just maintaining a home (how to replace air filters or how often to replace them, drain water heaters, etc) and it seems with your knowledge you could make a video on basic maintenance that needs to be done around the house that many people would benefit from (and then you could just link to the more in-depth videos) Just a suggestion.
I have a 28 years old Whirlpool dryer and here is what I have fixed, so far the dryer still run like a Champ.
1) Motor (burned out)
2) Pulley and belt (noisy/cause by lot of lints on the wheels).
3) igniter (igniter not glowing due to broken off).
4) Coil Valves (weak and not able to dry clothes)
5) Thermal fuse. (dryer lint block/clogged vent pipe).

You made a quick comment at the end about going to bed early enough to wake up without an alarm. It is awesome. I've been doing this a few years now. It's awful when the first thing that happens every day is some loud obnoxious noise.

Very informative. Regarding the Bosch dryer reset button:
After resetting it, you should check for a reason it tripped. Otherwise it
could just trip again. I had it happen twice and both times it was lint build
up somewhere in the dryer vent. The other thing is the belt slipping off on
some dryers. I think if someone spins the drum the wrong way it can take the
belt tensioner and make it go loose just long enough for the belt to pop off.
Who can resist spinning the drum by hand at least once?

A good tip Is the lit trap Needs to be washed not just cleaned. Detergent in fabric softener Residue builds up on the screen and causes Airflow restriction Over time. You wouldn't think so but it makes a big difference
I really enjoyed this dryer problems video. And the last part about getting better sleep between 10 pm and 2 am which is when most of your naturally produced melatonin is produced.

Have a Maytag gas dryer from 1973 that’s still going strong along with the matching washer. Interesting thing is it doesn’t have a igniter but uses a standing pilot, and I haven’t had a single issue with the pilot light going out and the only thing that can go bad is a thermal couple and that’s about it.
Great video! So well spoken, and the images are very helpful. Just pulled my igniter after noticing the wires were toasty and lacked continuity… didn’t think to actually look at the element. But sure enough, looks just like the image you provided. Cool! You clearly spent so much time on this, I have to subscribe. ❤

Great video thanks so much. I had a cracked blower in a newer dryer that was unfortunately attached to the motor instead of being individual pieces. The replacement part would have been to much to make it worth fixing.
Awesome video.. my fuses were all good. I shorted out the moisture switch (it was bad) and examined the temperature switch and converted the dryer to a single temp unit. It worked. fyi the replacement parts were not available, a real bummer.
My current kenmore electric dryer has worked without issue for over 30 years. Those were the days.
My Kenmore is 41 years old and still going strong...

Great info! Had a gas, front loading dryer that would melt synthetic clothes at a medium heat. Had it worked on numerous times, no one could figure it out. I just didn’t dry anything but cotton and only used medium low to low all the time. Was a very expensive dryer too, brand new. Yes, I had it looked at under warranty.
There wasn't any problem to be found. Whether you use high or medium heat the temperature is the same what changes is how long the temperature remains on or off. What I am trying to say is: When you have the high heat on the heat will remain longer than when you have the heat set up for medium, but the temperature will be the same for its peak only the time it remains will be shorter. Hope it can help. Have a good day.

I just had our 6 year old Maytag dryer apart because of black filings which I figured was the idler pulley falling apart,but upon further review one of the roller guide wheels was the cause of the filings,one had started to not fully spin and smear and mar the edge of the drum.
I also found the bottom of the ducting port that goes to the hose really constricted with lint and other debris,most likely a dryer fire adverted !

Home Depot sells a dryer vent brush kit for cleaning the lint out of the dryer vent. I also had to purchase the the extension rods because I have such a long run. My vent became clogged and my thermal fuse blew. I also got rid of the flexible vent that connects the dryer to the vent pipe in the wall and replaced it with a vent periscope that allows me to get the dryer much closer to the wall and provides much better air flow.

Packets of Silica Gel ... large packs can be found on Amazon ... can be tossed in a dryer to keep moisture out I have tried it .. it works. The packs I purchased can be microwaved for a few minutes to recharge the Silica in the large bags.
I would pretty much always suggest you put an entire maintenance kit versus repairing any single part if messing with idler pully, belt, or any rollers.

My Kenmore dryer is almost 20 years old. Secert: Dry on the lowest setting you can. Never had a problem with it. YET.
You could have a whirlpool kenmore or a Frigidaire kenmore it all depends on the model.

I probably told you about my old Kenmore dryer, wait, it’s a GE 🤦🏼♂️,from 1979 already, but
I changed the belt on it and I can only run it on low, because it gets way too hot on normal setting. Thanks for the tip on sleeping earlier, it's good to know. 😊
Yeahh, apparently melatonin is important. Glad you liked the sleep info! ;) And anything from the 70s, 80, and 90s was very well built. I wouldn't be surprised if your dryer lasts another 20-30 years!

I had to replace the rollers and belt on the Maytag dryer at work. We wash all the staffer's work scrubs. The machine was twelve years old and I'm not sure how all the loose change got from in the drum to the bottom of the cabinet but it was almost a hundred bucks in small change, mostly dimes.

a dryer was noisy as the baffles were loose and their retaining screws needed to be tightened, or some had completely fallen out. Just had to put those same parts back in place and tighten securely.
Timer went out years ago but still let us turn dryer on. Shut it off by turning the dial on timer or opening the door. Door switch broke a few months ago. Think I need to order some parts. Lol
Timer on washer just went out.
Thought about new machines.
Researching new machines makes me think I will order parts. Crazy built basic washers and dryers on the market now. Water saver, temperature, sensors and lid locks with a control board.
I like basic simple machines. I don't need my smartphone to turn on my laundry when I am out of town.
Sounds like something California had to do with.
The new machines are overpriced and don't last long. Repairing an old dryer is the best option IMO.

If your dryer is older maybe 5-10 years, you should do preventative maintenance. Remove cover and clean out lint from fan and ducts within dryer, reseal baffles for fan and ducting internal, remove dust from electric elements if that type, lube main ball bearing with proper thick grease like the type for automotive or any that has high drip point 300F or higher, check belts, rollers. Check electrical connection and terminals for signs of overheating in electric type.

@@WordofAdviceTV Thx, I did this recently on my 15 year old electric and it started much quicker after because the ball and socket was dry, and would've destroyed itself in time, exactly what the manufacturer wants.
I have an older dryer in my laundry room. Goes back to 2012, it was having a problem where the drum was spinning too slow for me so I took it apart and the belt was slipping, the surface of the belt looked like and smelt like it had it's end so I bought a new one and the drum was spinning at it's speed once more. One time it was drying my towels and out of no where, it stopped spinning. I open it up and the motor had broken so I replaced that.
I saw this great video too late before I found out about going to bed by 10pm as you discussed at the end. It’s now almost midnight, so I am 2 hours past due! 😢
@Ma Ma It's okay, I happen to do that more often than I would like too.. As long as one goes to sleep before midnight on most days, things should work out ;) I think.

Breaker can go bad too. Have enough power going through one side of the breaker for the dryer to come on and tumble but not enough to heat the element. So instead of the dryer being broke...its just not getting enough juice.
Had this happen once. Dryer quit heating, I replaced it with one my grandparents had in their shop that had worked great. When it did the same as the 1st, I figured it wasn't the dryers... it had to be related to the one thing they had in common...the breaker.
One customer (man) at the hardware store tried to argue with me swearing it was not possible, either it was getting power or it wasn't...when I was talking to a friend who owned the hardware store. My friend had never heard of that happening before but could see how it might would. Another customer (a much older man) confirmed that it was a definite possibility and I replaced the breaker...all was well.

Word of Advice TV…First, I want to tell you how much I learn and enjoy your programs.
I have a GE Electric Dryer: When I start a new load…it will only run for approximately 5-minutes then will cut off (on every load). If I wait a few minutes then turn it back on, it will run to completion. Any words of advice?
I did not hear this one mentioned and, in fact, an appliance technician with over 40 years experience was baffled by this one. We have a fairly new dryer that has been going through heating elements every two months or so. I've noticed that when the dryer has been on for only a few minutes the top of the dryer gets very hot to the touch - even when the heat is set on "low". At this point I think the machine may just be a lemon and something is wrong with the wiring or something. This is not an air flow problem. We've had the vents cleaned regularly. Any ideas? Thanks. It is driving us crazy and costing a lot of money.

For me it was a nest with a litter of baby squirrels that was blocking the dryer vent. When I set the dryer to Regular/Heavy the screams were unmistakable.

I fixed my dryer once. The hose wasn't connected to the exit vent. That was the reason the clothes weren't getting dry.

Indus dryer. Would a timer that isn't working prevent the start button from working? My switch on the door wasn't working and the drum would continue to spin when I opened the door. now the dryer doesn't come on at all. Would it be this door switch? thanks. great video!

Hello sir. I don't know if you're still in the dryer repair profession, I'd like to run a question by you. I've got a cheap modern Roper dryer. The model wirh the lint trap on the top right hand back corner or the dryer, with a single timer knob and push start button on the control pannel.
The issue im having is lint and dust seams to always be all over the top of the dryer, the walls around the dryer on top of the washer next to the dryer. I use a higher end metal flexible duct. the type that a has a 90° angle head on each end the swivels in 360° on each end. It is a shorter duct, only running from the bottom of the dryer to about 3/4 the hight of the dryer then venting straight threw the wall. The duct and vent are all clean and clear. Its not clogged outside at all. I empty the lint trap nearly every load. I thought the lint and dust were leaking from seams or cracks in that duct. So i sealed the entire duct with a strong air tight sealant, i also used aluminum duct tape to secure the duct to the dryer and to the duct leading outside, so its not coming from any of the normal locations one would think it would be. When i removed the rear cover from the dryer, there was a small amount of dust and lint inside of the cabinet, but not more than you would see opening any dryer. I'm kinda stumped and am considering using masking tape to seal the seams around the area that the lint trap slides down into, to see if it eliminates the problem, thinking maybe its blowing up and out threw there. It only seams to have a thin felt seal around it. But that seams to be a huge hassle that i can't imagine my gf or daughter keeping up with as often as laundry is being done. Do you have any other thoughts, or any ideas of something else i might look at first? Thank you for your time.

I have a Samsung Dryer (newer style) after pushing the start button, the drum would hum and not spin. I took off the back panel and hand turned the drum and made sure the belt was straight and it started working again. A few months later still no issues but a little reluctant to spin when starting sometimes. Do you think it could be the belt or the tension pulley ?
It's possible that something is seizing up. Could be the pulley or the rollers. Another possibility is that the motor is getting weak. Can't say for sure without taking it apart and taking a look though.
I watched the entire video and the problem with my GE gas dryer was not covered.
After closing the door & setting the timer, when the start button is pressed, the dryer makes a buzzing or humming sound. It does not tumble or do anything else. Open the door and the sound stops.
NOTE: This dryer does NOT have an annoying buzzer that sounds at the end of tbe cycle. I bought it used, so its possible there may be a buzzer that quit working or was disconnected by the previous owner. I've used this dryer for several years and this is the first time I've ever heard this sound and the first time it's ever not started.
I found a 3 videos that covered this. 2 were due to lint clogs where the blower wheel meets the removable lint trap / screen - front left botom corner for mine where the lint thing is in the door.
In the other video, the motor got replaced.
Thru a small hole just off-center on the blower wheel, I blew out a fair amount of lint with an air compressor. Thru openings to the left of the blower i also blew lint off of the motor and a little more in the bottom of the cabinet toward the back, vacuuming at the same time.
The blower wheel turns freely by hand and the drum turns with it. The belt is good & snug, and shows no wear.
Next I'll remove the flex duct hose from the back and look for a clog there. The hose itself is only 4 feet long and is clear.
Hoping i don't have to replace the motor . . . Any suggestions on what else I should check or do while it's apart?
Hello and tx for ur video. My last dry stopped with clothes still damp and warm. I push the start button but i hear a noise as if the dryer wants to start spinning, but it wont. Do u think its the fuse?
If you hear a noise like it is trying to start, then likely it is not the fuse. It's possible that the motor overheated. Or the pulley/rollers are stuck. If the motor overheated, it usually will turn back on if you give it some time to cool off. As for the rollers and pulley, you would need to take the dryer apart and take a look.
I have replaced the steam nozzle on my Whirlpool Duet gas dryer for the second time only to fail after a few days of use! The original valve lasted about 6 -8 years, the second less than 2 years and the most recent only a matter a matter of days! My only options seem to be to shut off water supply or buy replacement nozzles in bulk! Any suggestion?

A bit late Mr. Bowen, but if you're still having a problem try a water filter in front of the valve. The water here in LV seems to have an applesauce like mineral deposit in it that blocks my washer screen.
I'm going to show this video to the guy that keeps coming back to fix my dryer. I have 3 problems. Doesn't completely dry and makes a grinding sound for the 1st minute when I start it. Help!!

When you say your dryer won’t work anymore when the thermal fuse blows, does that mean it absolutely will not turn on anymore? Or will it just not work properly? My dryer seems to overheat and turn itself off when I use it, so every load I have to run the dryer 3 , 4 times or sometimes even more. Should I replace the fuse?
