Cynthia seems to hint at the eventual collapse of the “eternal” salvation/damnation construct. “Are you saved?” may eventually become a question without meaning, there being no separate soul or self to save, only one pure existence-consciousness, just as Vedanta has always said. But don’t relax too much, according to Vedanta, Buddhism and many near death experiences, the sense of the individual self survives death, and there are heavenly and hellish experiences, which are, like the self, impermanent. And the ego, as long as we live here, never goes away, according to those who have experienced divine union and the self-obliteration.

I knew BR and we were friends, of sorts. We exchanged many letters and had numerous dialogues. I've read her books as well and agree that her experience is unique, but she is certainly not without an "I." Rather, as you noted, Cynthia, I think the "I" becomes non-reflexively embedded in its "Am," or Ground of Being, still with its mind and memories -- even its emotions (oh how she could get riled up, at times!). Her anthropology never mentioned the term, soul, and she would never consider how a transformed, embodied, spiritual soul could account for what she was describing, so there was that. And in the end, she went off into the weeds in her book, "The Real Christ," pretty much claiming that most every theologian in Christian history got things wrong. She also has some bizarre distinctions between Jesus and "Christ." Her first two books, "The Experience of No-Self" and "The Path to No-Self" were delightful.
Hi Philip, I find in your post contradictions. On the one hand you say B’s first two book ate “delightful”. I assume you mean true to reality, especially to God, Reality Itself. I can find nothing in the ultimate conclusions of The Real Christ which contradicts the major realities in the first two books: especially that the self only knows God subjectively in this life, however the lofty experience of the divine, and only truly beyond the self condition. What in The Real Christ opposed that understanding. Also, your saying she does not address soul or spirit in the Real Christ seems to suggest your never read The Real Christ, as soul and spirit are addressed considerably in The Real Christ.
