- There are a total of five wizards in Lord of the Rings, each possessing their own unique abilities.
Gandalf the Grey is the most well-known of the wizards and serves as a mentor and guide to many of the main characters. He is wise and powerful, and uses his magic to protect and defend Middle-earth.
Saruman the White is initially one of the good wizards, but he becomes corrupted by his desire for power and turns against the other wizards and the forces of good.
Radagast the Brown is a wizard who is closely connected to nature and the animals of Middle-earth. He is less powerful than the other wizards and generally keeps to himself, but he still plays a crucial role in the story.
Alatar and Pallando are the Blue Wizards, who are sent to help fight against the rising darkness in the far eastern lands of Middle-earth. Not much is known about these wizards, as they do not play a large role in the main story.

The two blue ones but I’ve forgotten their names.
-Gandalf
I may be wrong, but this line could have been a perfect solution to the problem that the film producers had no rights to the names of the blue wizards, as they are mentioned in The Silmarillion but not in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
@@gestoertebedeutung6559 yep exactly right.
The two lost blue wizards are definitely Merlin and Yen Sid who became the founders of modern schools of magic
@@taroupriapus9760? What are you waffling about
Their names sound cool🧙♂️🧙🏻♂️
Radagast shouldn't be underestimated tho. He has literally thousands of animals as his friends and probably acts weak and weird so his enemies wouldn't be on their guard
he has a disarming demeanor
For those who don't know, all of these wizards are literally part of the Ainur. Literal lesser gods and angels so to speak if you compare it with what we are familiar with
They are so powerful their bosses literally had to nerf them before sending to Middle Earth because they thought instead of the Free Peoples seeing them as ally and guide, they'll see them as oppressors or fear them with how much power they possess.
Hence why their forms are all fragile old people, to give the image of being wise and not the type of a conqueror, instead
Also one more fact, Sauron is also part of the Ainur
@@JeyC_ I feel like everyone knows at this point who watch these videos. I would say that Radagast isn't really the most powerful of the Maiar (even the fact that he served Yavanna before going to Middle-Earth tells this), but he is still really awesome
@@Koskisenpoikawhat even is “power” anyway? How can you call one Maiar more powerful than the other.
@@kroneexesame way you can literally rank the power of the valars
If I'm correct, Alatar and Pallando were their real Maiar names. In Middle Earth, they used the names Morinehtar and Rómestámo. They played a major part in successfully disrupting Sauron's forces in the east which was a great contribution to the main story. Unfortunately, while we are not truly sure what happened to them afterwards, it is very likely they were killed.
I like to imagine they succeeded and were leading the effort in Rhun in a civil war between all the easterling tribes, those loyal to Sauron and those who opposed him like in the first age
I thought there were 7 wizards, I read in one of tolkiens other books that the Valar sent 7 of there kind to middle earth to help the peoples of middle earth against the darkness. And apparently they are some form of being that is not man nor elf , and that Gandalf was once close to Sauron and didn’t want to go to middle earth bc he knew the power Sauron could wield and was afraid of him, and that’s exactly why he was picked to be the wizard on the front lines in the fight against the darkness. I could be misremembering why I read 15 years ago but that’s how I remember it. It’s amazing how deep everything is in Tolkiens Universe , most ppl have no idea
There were seven Valar but they're different to The Istari (wizards) I'm only a new fan to Tolkien but i think that's right.
I think not killed but corrupted by the darkness
The two lost blue wizards are definitely Merlin and Yen Sid who became the founders of modern schools of magic
The five of them in battle would be extremely formidable
This Short was about how much time the Show Runners spent on researching the Tolkien Universe.
I agree on this one. Rings of power was painful to watch lore wise. If I was a casual fan I’m sure it would have been great though
@@Bugsy_Alonewhen did we learn the two wizards names I thought there just wasn’t a lot about them other than leading a civil war or disrupting forces in the east
And in the book "Saruman the White" becomes "Saruman the many Coloured" as his cloak seamed to continually change colour (showing his mastery over the other Wizards!).
🧙♂️
That mastery was about as long as this video
I think that was more of a visual oddity, at least the way I interpreted it, I assumed that Saruman became The Many Colored as that showed how muddied up his plans of purpose had become on Middle-Earth.
He maybe once was of White, but over the years he had darkened into darker colors at Spirit.
@maylabrown4584 similar to how LSD scrambles people's brains, fixated on the stimulation rather than the purity....
In my own personal mythology I’d like to think that one of the blue wizards became known as Merlin.
the show was a perfect opportunity to explore blue wizards in a setting of the far East but that's not enough brand recognition for the likes of Amazon I guess
It would’ve been
I think they left the one wizard deliberately open ended for a bit then finally committed on Gandalf with the ‘always follow your nose line’.
Which totally screws the lore and timeline, while the Blue wizards could’ve worked within the timeline in some versions of Tolkien as they arrived well before the other 3.
@@bry8636 I think the follow your nose line is a bait and switch. It's too recognizable a line.
He will turn out to be a blue wizard, and my guess is on the last episode of the final season Gandalf will sail over and the blue wizard will tell Gandalf that phrase.
It's really that they don't have any rights to the blue wizards (among many other things like majority of the simarillion). New Line also didn't have rights hence Gandalf "forgetting" their names when Bilbo asked him about the other wizards.
I still think they should have gotten more rights instead of creating a show out of a couple of appendices then use creative liberty on creating new characters and how existing characters interact with one another
@@TheBairdono its Gandalf
In The Lord of the Rings, Saruman mentions five wizards. That is all there is about them. Everything we know about the blue wizards come from other sources, that are not included in the film rights Tolkien sold. To even use the term "blue wizards" in a derived work, you need the permission of the Tokien Estate. They have made it clear that they are not going to grant any permissions.
They say radaghast is the weakest, but here, "weak" is EXTREMELY relative and unimportant. All the wizards are actually Ainur, lesser gods, and they had to be weakened before coming to the mortal realm so they wouldn't be seen as oppresors and detrimental to middle earth as a whole.
All it would take is one of the Valar to remove his restrictions and he would be the most powerful Druid in all of fiction.
Edit: **Maiar.
Actually they are Maiar**
Saruman was arrogant, even in Valinor.
Arrogant, yes. But it matters not. Him being corrupted by Sauron and failing to fulfill his divine calling however, does.
They're like the Power Rangers of Middle Earth
I'd love a blue wizard spin-off BASED ON TOLKIEN LORE! Phew, just got that in
I don't recall Radagast doing squat in the books. He played a part in the movies. That's it.
He helped Saruman to lure Gandalf to the tower of Orthanc, and when that turned out to be a bust, he sent the eagle to go save him. I think he was also the one to first warn Gandalf about the Nazgûl. He did a couple things, but it was all just mentioned in passing. He never makes an actual appearance.
Feeding cute bird and squirrels? That's a win for me.
He shows up in the first book. He has already rescued the hobbits a couple of times and I am only half way through the book.
The blue ones play a crucial role though not in the actual story. It was said that if not for the blue wizards the east would've vastly outnumbered the west. Obvs their best magic ability though was conjuring birth control.
Gandalf and Radagast are my favorites 😊😊😊😊
The wise men👑💫
Would love a story of the two blues.
I do know that they caused many Easterlings to give up their cause and join the “good side”.
Gandalf is my favorite Lord of the Rings character! Keep up the great work! New subscriber here!
What if blue wizards went to the 🌊🌊🌊
What do you mean
Blue wizard is underrated
The amazon show would have been better to focus on what the blue wizards battle in the east.
Alatar and Pallando. So that’s what the last two wizards are called.
Pretty sure the blue wizard failed in the east
Well that was informative 😅
It’s funny bc gandalf makes himself seem like the weakest of the wizards but is the best of all the ones sent to middle earth
Can we have a movie on the blue wizards or book ????
The two lost blue wizards are definitely Merlin and Yen Sid who became the founders of modern schools of magic
Radagast the Brown
I wasn't aware of the blue ones. But power wise I think below is the ranking
White
Grey
Brown
You've missed that Gandalf was sent to basically watch and the douchey white because he wasn't fully trusted...
Respect.✨️.
Ngl, the Blue Wizards are underrated tbh, they played a crucial role in the East by swaying almost half of the easterlings in Rhûn, without them, Gondor and the Free People would have been overwhelmed
According to token lore they went east to help fight his forces there. I know the movies never covered the eastern wars but they did have some part of the storyline. Would have been cool to see them unless they were turn evil.
I am interested in the runes on sarumans forehead. Does anyone know something about them?
Radagast the humble watcher of the woods! Radagast the gentle.
Don't underestimate Radagast he's the weakest yes but he's a wizard no matter if he's the weakest he's still very strong wizards are supposed to have this nice and innocent image but they're actually very strong (ALL of them)
And Sauron makes Six only he's been in Middle Earth so long he forgot to wear the hat.
There were many Maia in Middle Earth (Luthién mother for example) but only 5 Istari
Valar : alright all five of you go help the free people of middle earth
Gandalf : alright yes sir
The two blue wizards : yeah whatever we will just grab a beer and take a deep sleep under some cave and be unbothered for the next 1000 years
The istari are powerful beings. The valar sent them to counsel and provide guidance using limited powers
The two blue wizards went to the east and founded a school of magic (Hogwarts) and now they're Dumbledore and Grindelwald
It would seem to me that Radagast the Brown is indeed the most powerful of all wizards because he represents Monay, but the overseeing of the entire planet and nature.❤️🌎❤️🌍❤️🌏❤️
Awesome!! =D
My favorite
this guy watched the movies, sick
❤😘
He is GOOD 😂😅
Thanks! Now I finally know the names of the Blue wizards. Peter Jackson really could have done better research and had Gandalf name them instead of saying he'd forgotten their names. SMH.
The music that interrupts and restarts is so annoying
Gan Dolf
Alatar has 7 fingers apparently
Alatar and Pollando the too blue wizards went to the far east and found another wizard by the name of Sakaguchi and made their own class in Final Fantasy 5.
The two lost blue wizards are definitely Merlin and Yen Sid who became the founders of modern schools of magic , both also in Kingdom Hearts
Radagast can shape shift
He forught Sehlob and the necromancer maybe even the nine protects South Mirkwood
and as a side note of interest, one of Gandalf's specialties is.....Hobbits!
What about tom bombadil😅
What about Tom something?
😍💕
I thought the blue wizards were sent to the west to help the dwarves
I thought sauron was a original wizard/angel as well just evil
No sauron was an actual god who fell from grace similar to Satan in Christianity the wizards were demi gods but no where near as powerful as Sauron.
Radagast got caught long ago, something about hobbit Woman, needless to say they cast him out of the order and put him on a list, SHAME
Confusing
Gandalf took down a Balrog and a Dragon. I don’t think anyone else can say that.
Fingolfin entered the chat....
Shits always going down in the east
I wish to see these blue wizards in rings of power series....
Read the silmirilion, all will be revealed.
They send 2 wizards to the east and the Easterlings, Haradrims and Corsairs still made it to Minas Tirith to fk shit up…how useless can they be??
Sarahmon the white
Lord of the Rings: Druids are just weak wizards.
I hope we see The Blue Wizards in The Rings of Power.
Why isn't gandalfs ring of power mentioned
The blue wizards were completely useless 😂
There are 7. You're forgetting the two Maia that were tasked with the movement of the sun and moon
Gandalf the gay.
Radagast is the best nigga
They were sent away on an 1800-year quest by a pantheon of gods (the Valar) - to defeat a hidden demigod on a distant continent.
the hand of Sauron killed the 2 blue wizards according to the game shadow of mordor but I not sure if that is part of the main story
no it isn't Talion isn't Canon either
The exact number of Istari is not known, but only 5 are known
Saruman has a rather large hole in his belly, radagast would be a shroomed up magic Viking berserker with a big stick and Lamborghini rabbits, gandalf would turn up late or ‘precisely when he means to’ after hot boxing Bilbo’s hobbit hole. And the two blue wizards probably invented the recipe for Mordor meth and that’s why we haven’t heard from them since they went east 🤷♂️
The two lost blue wizards are definitely Merlin and Yen Sid who became the founders of modern schools of magic
Definitely not....
6 you forgot one
Not everyone knows about the blue wizards. I bet Tolkien had an epic story for them
