- There are a total of five wizards in Lord of the Rings, each possessing their own unique abilities.
Gandalf the Grey is the most well-known of the wizards and serves as a mentor and guide to many of the main characters. He is wise and powerful, and uses his magic to protect and defend Middle-earth.
Saruman the White is initially one of the good wizards, but he becomes corrupted by his desire for power and turns against the other wizards and the forces of good.
Radagast the Brown is a wizard who is closely connected to nature and the animals of Middle-earth. He is less powerful than the other wizards and generally keeps to himself, but he still plays a crucial role in the story.
Alatar and Pallando are the Blue Wizards, who are sent to help fight against the rising darkness in the far eastern lands of Middle-earth. Not much is known about these wizards, as they do not play a large role in the main story.

The two blue ones but I’ve forgotten their names.
-Gandalf
I may be wrong, but this line could have been a perfect solution to the problem that the film producers had no rights to the names of the blue wizards, as they are mentioned in The Silmarillion but not in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
@@gestoertebedeutung6559 yep exactly right.
The two lost blue wizards are definitely Merlin and Yen Sid who became the founders of modern schools of magic
@@taroupriapus9760? What are you waffling about
Their names sound cool🧙♂️🧙🏻♂️
The five of them in battle would be extremely formidable
If I'm correct, Alatar and Pallando were their real Maiar names. In Middle Earth, they used the names Morinehtar and Rómestámo. They played a major part in successfully disrupting Sauron's forces in the east which was a great contribution to the main story. Unfortunately, while we are not truly sure what happened to them afterwards, it is very likely they were killed.
I like to imagine they succeeded and were leading the effort in Rhun in a civil war between all the easterling tribes, those loyal to Sauron and those who opposed him like in the first age
I thought there were 7 wizards, I read in one of tolkiens other books that the Valar sent 7 of there kind to middle earth to help the peoples of middle earth against the darkness. And apparently they are some form of being that is not man nor elf , and that Gandalf was once close to Sauron and didn’t want to go to middle earth bc he knew the power Sauron could wield and was afraid of him, and that’s exactly why he was picked to be the wizard on the front lines in the fight against the darkness. I could be misremembering why I read 15 years ago but that’s how I remember it. It’s amazing how deep everything is in Tolkiens Universe , most ppl have no idea
There were seven Valar but they're different to The Istari (wizards) I'm only a new fan to Tolkien but i think that's right.
I think not killed but corrupted by the darkness
The two lost blue wizards are definitely Merlin and Yen Sid who became the founders of modern schools of magic
Radagast shouldn't be underestimated tho. He has literally thousands of animals as his friends and probably acts weak and weird so his enemies wouldn't be on their guard
he has a disarming demeanor
For those who don't know, all of these wizards are literally part of the Ainur. Literal lesser gods and angels so to speak if you compare it with what we are familiar with
They are so powerful their bosses literally had to nerf them before sending to Middle Earth because they thought instead of the Free Peoples seeing them as ally and guide, they'll see them as oppressors or fear them with how much power they possess.
Hence why their forms are all fragile old people, to give the image of being wise and not the type of a conqueror, instead
Also one more fact, Sauron is also part of the Ainur
@@JeyC_ I feel like everyone knows at this point who watch these videos. I would say that Radagast isn't really the most powerful of the Maiar (even the fact that he served Yavanna before going to Middle-Earth tells this), but he is still really awesome
@@Koskisenpoikawhat even is “power” anyway? How can you call one Maiar more powerful than the other.
@@kroneexesame way you can literally rank the power of the valars
And in the book "Saruman the White" becomes "Saruman the many Coloured" as his cloak seamed to continually change colour (showing his mastery over the other Wizards!).
🧙♂️
That mastery was about as long as this video
I think that was more of a visual oddity, at least the way I interpreted it, I assumed that Saruman became The Many Colored as that showed how muddied up his plans of purpose had become on Middle-Earth.
He maybe once was of White, but over the years he had darkened into darker colors at Spirit.
@maylabrown4584 similar to how LSD scrambles people's brains, fixated on the stimulation rather than the purity....
Also if I'm not mistaken he mentions how he views white as being weak since once you add some color it's no longer white and sees it as a color that's easy to change and therefore weaker
In the books, Gandalf knew Saruman was corrupted by the colors in his robes
They say radaghast is the weakest, but here, "weak" is EXTREMELY relative and unimportant. All the wizards are actually Ainur, lesser gods, and they had to be weakened before coming to the mortal realm so they wouldn't be seen as oppresors and detrimental to middle earth as a whole.
All it would take is one of the Valar to remove his restrictions and he would be the most powerful Druid in all of fiction.
Edit: **Maiar.
Actually they are Maiar**
Nothing a good British SAS team couldn't handle.
the show was a perfect opportunity to explore blue wizards in a setting of the far East but that's not enough brand recognition for the likes of Amazon I guess
It would’ve been
I think they left the one wizard deliberately open ended for a bit then finally committed on Gandalf with the ‘always follow your nose line’.
Which totally screws the lore and timeline, while the Blue wizards could’ve worked within the timeline in some versions of Tolkien as they arrived well before the other 3.
@@bry8636 I think the follow your nose line is a bait and switch. It's too recognizable a line.
He will turn out to be a blue wizard, and my guess is on the last episode of the final season Gandalf will sail over and the blue wizard will tell Gandalf that phrase.
It's really that they don't have any rights to the blue wizards (among many other things like majority of the simarillion). New Line also didn't have rights hence Gandalf "forgetting" their names when Bilbo asked him about the other wizards.
I still think they should have gotten more rights instead of creating a show out of a couple of appendices then use creative liberty on creating new characters and how existing characters interact with one another
@@TheBairdono its Gandalf
In The Lord of the Rings, Saruman mentions five wizards. That is all there is about them. Everything we know about the blue wizards come from other sources, that are not included in the film rights Tolkien sold. To even use the term "blue wizards" in a derived work, you need the permission of the Tokien Estate. They have made it clear that they are not going to grant any permissions.
We need a movie with Alatar and Palando
its called Brokeback Mountain
@@mr.spokesman5849
Not even the least-bit clever, try again... 🙄
It’s called Brokeback Mountain, it’s not as popular as LOTR but it’s really good
No, we absolutely 100% unequivocally do not.
Saruman was arrogant, even in Valinor.
Arrogant, yes. But it matters not. Him being corrupted by Sauron and failing to fulfill his divine calling however, does.
Would love a story of the two blues.
I do know that they caused many Easterlings to give up their cause and join the “good side”.
Tolkien intentionally left their story ambiguous. You idiots crawling up and down the comments wishing for a story on them
Radegast, the brown is actually the strongest of all the wizards… in the books he picks up, & around with, the “One Ring” - & it has no affect on him… that ms one example of his strength… yes he has a different kind of power than Gandalf or Sauron but it is unique to him & overall- surpasses the others.
They're like the Power Rangers of Middle Earth
hell naah
The blue ones play a crucial role though not in the actual story. It was said that if not for the blue wizards the east would've vastly outnumbered the west. Obvs their best magic ability though was conjuring birth control.
Idk, the BLUE wizards? Sounds to me like they were handing out blue chews and keeping the Easterlings busy in other ways lol
Gandalf respect all of them, humble and powerful wizard.
I wish they would make a movie and it involve the true OGs of the lotr universe. Like the Valars mightiest group, the eight Aratar. Nienna is one of them and she taught Gandalf a lot.
Gandalf was Nienna's greatest pupil among all the others who dwelt in the Halls of Nienna. She taught him pity and many other things before he was chosen as the second wizard sent to lead the people of Middle-earth into standing against Sauron.
All that is known about her appearance is that she wore a grey hood. Given that Gandalf was her greatest student, his being clothed in grey may have been a mark of respect to his teacher.
You've missed that Gandalf was sent to basically watch and the douchey white because he wasn't fully trusted...
I always thought that Radagast was the strongest one but went crazy.
1st Theory: Sauron corrupted 2 wizard.
2nd Theory: Sauron corrupted one wizard. Tombadil fighted aganist corrupted wizard. Tom Bombadil arch mage class maybe. They chasing secret evil. Most dangerous dark lord. Smarter then Sauron/Stronger then Melkor. History repeat itself.
Future battle: Secret villain destroyed Shire. Sauron already know his demise.
Secret villain must be spy-mage class.
I feel something. 2 wizard has different goals. They are not going to picnic.
I'd love a blue wizard spin-off BASED ON TOLKIEN LORE! Phew, just got that in
According to token lore they went east to help fight his forces there. I know the movies never covered the eastern wars but they did have some part of the storyline. Would have been cool to see them unless they were turn evil.
Idk why, but I've always liked how the brown wizard has poop in his hair & doesnt care
“Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing." - Vince Lombardi
I’m sure the Ravens want this monkey off their backs.
In computer terms
Gandalf is the enemy as he is the black hat
Saruman is the protector as he is the white hat
Radagast is the neutral as he is the brown hat that helps either white or black.
I don't recall Radagast doing squat in the books. He played a part in the movies. That's it.
He helped Saruman to lure Gandalf to the tower of Orthanc, and when that turned out to be a bust, he sent the eagle to go save him. I think he was also the one to first warn Gandalf about the Nazgûl. He did a couple things, but it was all just mentioned in passing. He never makes an actual appearance.
Feeding cute bird and squirrels? That's a win for me.
He shows up in the first book. He has already rescued the hobbits a couple of times and I am only half way through the book.
@@gamegeekx😊
It would seem to me that Radagast the Brown is indeed the most powerful of all wizards because he represents Monay, but the overseeing of the entire planet and nature.❤️🌎❤️🌍❤️🌏❤️
Tolkien wrote in one of his letters that the only things mentioned in TLotR that he did not know anything about, were the last two wizards (of five), and the cats of Queen Beruthiel. He later write about both, but when he wrotes Saruman's line about Gandalf wanting the staffs of the five wizards, he just made up the number on the spot.
And Sauron makes Six only he's been in Middle Earth so long he forgot to wear the hat.
There were many Maia in Middle Earth (Luthién mother for example) but only 5 Istari
Ngl, the Blue Wizards are underrated tbh, they played a crucial role in the East by swaying almost half of the easterlings in Rhûn, without them, Gondor and the Free People would have been overwhelmed
Gandalf and Radagast are my favorites 😊😊😊😊
Gandalf is my favorite Lord of the Rings character! Keep up the great work! New subscriber here!
Peter Jackson has a mine to play with in the Tolkien universe! There's so much to explore and still keeping the stories authentic and interesting! I hope he does continue to contribute to this universe, he's done a great job.
Video starts: Ohhh I don’t actually know anything about the other wizards
Video ends: I still don’t know anything about the other wizards..
Is Gandalf from Hogwarts? Must be a good friend with Dumbledore
Blue wizard is underrated
The reason why Gandalf is powerful is because when the Boss shows up tells the party to run, so he kills the boss (Balrog) and gets all the Exp. Then he shows up all level up and with new legendary robe and staff. Greedy, Gandalf.
The blue wizards will most likely turn up in David Eddings books " The Belgarion Edition " and i hope they make a movie of it too. Great book
Thanks! Now I finally know the names of the Blue wizards. Peter Jackson really could have done better research and had Gandalf name them instead of saying he'd forgotten their names. SMH.
You realize it was a solution to go around Copyright?
You .must buy a right for every named character and place if you wanna make for profit content from Tolkiens work.
@@jarskil8862 Really??? Well, you may know what's what, but that just doesn't make sense. Unless Tolkien's estate has somehow worked it that weird way. Then again, the Blue wizards are never mentioned in LotR by any names.
Valar : alright all five of you go help the free people of middle earth
Gandalf : alright yes sir
The two blue wizards : yeah whatever we will just grab a beer and take a deep sleep under some cave and be unbothered for the next 1000 years
Alatar and Pallando. So that’s what the last two wizards are called.
What about Galadriel
Can we have a movie on the blue wizards or book ????
The two lost blue wizards are definitely Merlin and Yen Sid who became the founders of modern schools of magic
They will play a big role in rings of power
Saruman is the guy who says, Yes she's a stripper. But I CAN SAVE HER !!!
You forgot Wizard white beard. He's in the top righthand corner, hidden behind the market stand. 😂
Instead of Rings of Power, they should have done a show for the 2 blue wizards & fleshed out their origins & stories
I wasn't aware of the blue ones. But power wise I think below is the ranking
White
Grey
Brown
And the blue is the most powerful, because they are x2.
The amazon show would have been better to focus on what the blue wizards battle in the east.
They would have needed to make them gay to do that
Instead of The Rings of Power, we should've gotten a story on the Blue Wizards.
Gandalf the Fool
Sauruman the Stinky
Radagast the Frankly, quite strange
The blue-whatsits
Is it a coincidence that Sauron and Sarumon sound so similar and Sarumon being the corrupt one?
Gandalf took down a Balrog and a Dragon. I don’t think anyone else can say that.
Fingolfin entered the chat....
The blue ones now on serie rings of power
I think theyre gonna introduce one of the blue wizards in s2 of rings of power
And then they'res Tom Bombadil 💀
Don't underestimate Radagast he's the weakest yes but he's a wizard no matter if he's the weakest he's still very strong wizards are supposed to have this nice and innocent image but they're actually very strong (ALL of them)
6 now. According to Rings of Power
Gendalf actually has one of the rings of power. Hes also not a man or a woman in the other world he came from
Where is the Blue wizard spin off? Nah, they'd probably just mess it up...
Radagast the humble watcher of the woods! Radagast the gentle.
The wise men👑💫
They must have had a reason to stay in the east. they probably have their own side story that can be made a spin-off in it of itself. Have always been curious about their journey
Would've been cool if the blue wizards appeared in the Hobbit trilogy
Wow thanks for the recap... the same info we learned from the MOVIES!!!!....
The istari are powerful beings. The valar sent them to counsel and provide guidance using limited powers
Radagast the Brown
Why do these wizards even exist if they're unimportant?
Gandalf the grey
The 2 blue wizards is founder of Hogwarts..
Hats off to the gentleman who dedicated his life to finding the names of the blue wizard!!
What, no red wizards, green wizards, black wizards, yellow wizards, purple wizards, polka dot wizards?
Radagast wasnt really less powerful than any of the other wizards its more his powers are just used differently.
Only two are mentioned in the movies if I'm not mistaken
SARUMAN, THE STANKEY!!!!
What's the song in the background? I have heard it many times but never knew where its from ... does anyone know?
Read the silmirilion, all will be revealed.
What about Tom Bombadil? Or Sauron?
Really irks me that 2 of the 5 just vanish and no one knows anything, their powers, barely a name mentioned..we could have an entire series just for the 5 wizards. Sheesh. With how much jackson made up/how much the movie and TV show industry makes up, we can't get Anything?!
Alatar has 7 fingers apparently
What about when gandalf becomes gandalf the white
Who is Tom Bombadil then? Some say he is one of the blue wizard
I am interested in the runes on sarumans forehead. Does anyone know something about them?
Not everyone knows about the blue wizards. I bet Tolkien had an epic story for them
Sauron is also one of them, a maiar
He’s not an Istari though, so not one of the wizards. There were other Maiar there too who were also not Istari
@@Duirfolk yes, he is not istari, but also from Maia Race..
A spin off needs to be told of the other wizards and this 5 when they were young😂
The music that interrupts and restarts is so annoying
I wish to see these blue wizards in rings of power series....
what about Tom Bombadil??
this guy watched the movies, sick
Than the two Istari in the Ring of Power would br Gandalf and Radagas
i dont understand why do they talk about only 5 always.. because practically Tom Bombadill is a wizard too.. and there are more wizards :D probably there are plenty of magic users. THere is just 5 Maiar wizards i suppose
Then who is this dark wizard in Rings of Powers season 2?
Hmmm so what about Tom bombidil? The first.
Respect.✨️.
My favorite
and as a side note of interest, one of Gandalf's specialties is.....Hobbits!
Ähm...what about Tom Bombadil?
