    *Things you Missed:*
Rocket Launcher: The recoil pattern from the rocket launcher seen in-game shouldn't really exist; the entire point of the concept of this type of rocket launcher is for all exhaust to leave the rear of the launcher, and with that virtually all the recoil as well. (Hence the fact they were originally referred to as "recoil-less rifles".) It should probably be noted that such a design does have back-blast; anyone standing directly behind it has a very serious chance of injury or even death. Game files also show an animation that indicate the RL was going to be single-shot only, much like the Team Fortress Classic counterpart. One final note: I did find that the Swedish "Carl Gustaf Recoilless Rifle" looks surprisingly similar to the RL, but I'm guessing it is likely a coincidence as I had to do some digging before I found it by accident.
Original: There are unused game files that included unique particle effects, as well as additional sounds for picking up ammo and using chat. The weapon also fires directly in a straight line instead of at an angle, which can be either an advantage or disadvantage depending on the circumstances.
Direct Hit: While the first weapon that came to mind as a basis for this would be the Mk 153 Shoulder-Launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon ("SMAW") I did find that the FIM-43 Redeye looked strikingly similar to the Direct Hit. (It's worth noting two things here: the 'build dates' for the Redeye was between 1962 and 1970, and that the successor, originally entitled "Redeye II", became the FIM-92 Stinger, which also strikes a resemblance to the Direct Hit.)
Black Box: Aside from the term for an aircraft's Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder, the term "black box" is used to describe an object with a known function but with an unknown means of internal operation (ie, how you get health by shooting people, or how Soldier crams a bunch of rockets into what are effectively single-shot weapons). "Black box" is also American slang for a briefcase that contains nuclear launch codes.
Liberty Launcher: Original names included "Jumper's Trumpet" and "Liberty".
Cow Mangler 5000: The weapon name is a nod to that classic scene of a cow getting abducted by aliens via some sort of beam of light.
Beggar's Bazooka: The original name for this was "Doe's Dumpster Device". It was also submitted as a mass item set. This not only included the "Helmet without a Home" (originally '"Gunner's Guard") and "Captain's Cocktails" (originally "Forager's Frags"), but also included weapons such as "Survivalist's Slugger" (shotgun), "Manly Maggot Masher" (shovel), and the "Busted Booster" (banner).
Air Strike: Originally uploaded to the workshop under the name "The Atom Launcher".
Buff Banner: On the back, it has the text "Screaming Eagles", which is a reference to the US Army's 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed 'Screaming Eagles'. The Festive version has this text replaced with 'Smissmiss'.
Gunboats: Gunboats is a type of military vessel created for the purpose of ferrying guns to bombard coastlines. It's also worth noting that, had Demoman won the WAR! Update, he would have ended up receiving the Gunboats instead of Soldier.
Battalion's Backup: Concept art shows the banner was originally going to be team colored.
Mantreads: The name is a joke off of boots that are designed for certain walking surfaces (snow treads, mountain treads, etc.); hence the name, MANtreads.
BASE Jumper: Originally uploaded under the name "Troop Chute".
Panic Attack: The Panic Attack's original name was, appropriately, "War Drum". Side note: the original kill icon strongly resembles an item in the workshop under the name "Raiding Aid"...
Shovel: The crit animation is very similar to a scene in "Meet the Soldier"... more specifically, the scene where he absolutely demolishes a Spy.
The Equalizer: The Equalizer was originally given to Poopy Joe to "pierce the Vault of Heaven itself".
The Escape Plan: The story behind this one is a bit awkward. Apparently, two users by the name of Tom Francis and Jibberish came up with the weapon concept, and even made a little website that contained the weapon concept as well as a bunch of other weapon concepts. (The website is actually still up! Go to the TF2Wiki and go to the 'Trivia' section for the Equalizer if you're curious.) Naturally, they protested they had created the weapon first when Valve uploaded their own version. Between this "discovery" and the mentioned balancing issues, Valve ended up splitting the weapon so that the original concept was more properly recognized. So yeah...that happened.
Half-Zatoichi: Despite being based off a katakana, which are two-handed swords, Soldier doesn't give a damn and only uses one.
Disciplinary Action: I know this is kinda irrelevant, but my brother was "gifted" a Disciplinary Action with the name "whip me papi OwO", and I think that's absolutely hilarious.
Market Gardner: The name is based off the infamous "Operation Market Garden", which was failed attempt to take several key bridges under German control during World War II, and was up to that time the largest invasion via paratrooper.
Whew, that was a load to type.

0:32 I'm fairly certain that's not an rpg, but a bazooka, since the bazooka was an american invention and I *THINK* that the rpg was invented by the soviets, also the weapon itself resembles the appearance of a bazooka

The Pain Train’s “stake” as you put it is an iron railroad spike. They are used to nail rails to the wooden ties underneath.

    Fantastic video as always!
However, I do have a some annoying gun gripes I would like to bring to surface.
The stock shotgun, while bolstering a heavy resemblance to the Ithaca M37, would have to be heavily modified from original model of the M37. An original M37 would both load and eject from the bottom of the receiver, while the in-game shotgun ejects from the left side of the receiver (as stated in the video).
Alternatively, I would suggest that the stock shotgun is instead modeled after a Winchester Model 12.
The Pain Train does not have a stake spiked through it, but rather a railroad spike (hence the name "pain train")
Regardless, your video is highly informative and very well put together! I enjoy your content and can't wait for the next episode!

I posted this in the community tab but I'll post it here as well:
I just wanna say thanks for all the feedback I'm getting for the items origins video series, as I said I'm not a gun person and I appreciate all the suggestions for what weapons might be based off. I'm going to start collecting them all and make a "corrections and additions" video at the end.
I've already recorded all the audio for every class because rn I'm in a position where I pretty much have no ability to re-record and make fixes and I want to focus on getting all the videos done and scheduled.
    Pyro is next week!

Pretty sure soldier's stock boots (and gunboats) are Jungle Boots. Issued to troops in Vietnam after the military realized how bad the all-leather boots they had before were usless. From the sole to how they trapped heat, and did nothing to protect soldiers from spike traps. The mantreads are WWII jump boots with a few extra straps.

The mantreads actually has to do with American history. The cav scouts during winter in ww2 laces on boots would freeze and break. Tankers would give them their laces and use belts to hold their boots together. Also, the direct hit reminds me of the carl gustaf recoilless rifle because of the flared back and scope.

They use straps instead of strings since strings can catch stuff such a lever you didnt want to
And it matters if you are in a tank

The Mantreads are "Tanker Boots" typically worn by vehicle crew's (such as, well, tanks) who have to operate in tight conditions where shoelaces could easily get snagged, hence the buckles and straps.

Great video. I know this isn't correlated but your tf2 map videos can be interesting when you're discussing the geometry and how the maps playout. You should go over some old competitive maps played through leagues. Maybe look at the general differences between how different maps were played then and now, and what changed?

    • @Whomobile
      @Whomobile  5 лет назад

Its an interesting idea and I have thought about looking at how much maps have changed over time, but the tough part of that is tracking down the original bsp files for Valve made maps as they tend not to get archived as much

The Soldiers helmet is the M1 pot type used by GI's in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam until it was phased out in the 1980's by the PASGT. Personally I owned made back in the 60's which I've since donated to my town's Leigon Hall and also came with a liner which got lost in transit.
